Taiwan Raises 2025 GDP Growth Forecast to 4.45% on Strong Tech Exports
Taiwan's gross domestic product is now expected to expand 4.45% this year, according to the official forecast from the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, higher than the 3.1% it forecast in May.
Exports this year from Taiwan, a major producer of chips powering the AI surge, are predicted to expand by 24.04%, the agency said, upgrading sharply a previous forecast of 8.99%.
The optimistic outlook comes even after US President Donald Trump imposed a 20% tariff on Taiwan goods, Reuters reported.
Taiwan's government has said the 20% tariff is "temporary" as it continues to negotiate with the US for more favorable rates.
Gross domestic product expanded by a revised 8.01% in the second quarter from a year earlier, compared with a preliminary 7.96%, the statistics agency said.
It also lowered the forecast for the consumer price index (CPI) to 1.76% from 1.88% previously.

KARACHI: Pakistan on Friday launched its third Hangor-class submarine in China, the navy said in a statement, in the latest sign of the country's growing military ties with Beijing. The launch comes months after Pakistan's brief but intense military standoff with India, which saw the two nuclear-armed neighbors exchange air, missile, drone and artillery attacks. In recent years, Islamabad has strengthened its defence collaboration with China, inducting state-of-the-art Chinese hardware across all three services, including Z-10ME attack helicopters earlier this month and JF-17 fighter jets jointly developed with Beijing. The navy said the new vessel, equipped with modern sensors and weapons, will enhance its capabilities to safeguard national interests and contribute to a 'secure and cooperative maritime environment.' 'Their cutting-edge weaponry and advanced sensors would be instrumental in sustaining regional power equilibrium and ensuring maritime stability,' Vice Admiral Abdul Samad, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Project-2, said at the launch ceremony in Wuhan, according to a navy statement. The launch took place at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group's Shuangliu Base and was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, including representatives of China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC). Samad commended the steady progress of the project, praised the work of Chinese shipbuilders and said the Hangor-class program would 'bring a fresh dimension' to Pakistan-China naval cooperation. The submarines are a new generation of diesel-electric attack vessels and equipped with advanced sensors and modern weapon systems to strengthen the country's underwater warfare capabilities. Pakistan signed a contract with CSOC to acquire eight Hangor-class submarines. Four are being built in China, while the remaining four will be produced in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Limited under a transfer-of-technology program. The first two submarines in the series were launched in 2024, with deliveries expected over the next several years.

Zelenskiy Says Alaska Summit Should Open Path to Ukraine-Russia-US Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said it was important that Friday's Russia-US summit in Alaska opened up a path towards a "just peace", as well as substantive three-way talks between the leaders of Ukraine, Russia and the United States. "It is time to end the war, and the necessary steps must be taken by Russia. We are counting on America," Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram messaging app. US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were due to meet at a Cold War-era air force base in Alaska on Friday to discuss a ceasefire deal for Ukraine that the US sees as a possible way to end the deadliest war in Europe since World War Two. Trump said he would not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine in the meeting and would let Kyiv decide whether to engage in territorial swaps with Russia. "Indeed, high stakes. The key thing is that this meeting should open up a real path towards a just peace and a substantive discussion between leaders in a trilateral format – Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side," Zelenskiy said. This week, Zelenskiy held a meeting with European leaders, and on Friday agreed with the French president to meet after the US-Russia summit.

Trump says semiconductor tariffs coming soon
US President Donald Trump said Friday he plans to announce tariffs on steel and semiconductors in the coming weeks. 'I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after, on steel and, I would say, chips. Chips and semiconductors, we'll be setting sometime next week, the week after,' Trump said onboard Air Force One as he headed to Alaska for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said the levy rate would be 'lower at the beginning' but 'very high after a certain period of time,' as a way to encourage businesses to relocate operations to the United States. The president said his policy would prompt companies in key industries like automobiles and artificial intelligence to relocate in order to 'beat the tariffs,' which could be 200 or 300 percent. Trump has also said he would employ this strategy with pharmaceuticals. On August 6, Trump announced a 100 percent tariff on semiconductors from firms that do not invest in the United States. Trump has already instituted tariffs on steel, announcing an initial 25 percent levy that was later doubled to 50 percent.
