Pacquiao ‘hungry' for comeback after four-year layoff
LOS ANGELES: Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday that his lengthy layoff from boxing has reignited his passion for the sport as he prepares for next month's world welterweight title comeback against Mario Barrios.

The 46-year-old Filipino boxing icon faces World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19, four years after his last fight ended in defeat.
Pacquiao has reunited with long-time veteran trainer Freddie Roach for next month's title tilt, and spoke to journalists on Wednesday as he worked out at the Hall of Famer's Wild Card gym in Hollywood.
'Four years rest has been good for me,' Pacquiao said after showing off some impressive hand speed in an open pads session.
'I've been in boxing for so many decades, so it's good for my body to rest for four years.
'Now I'm back, I'm hungry to fight again. I'm hungry to fight in a big fight like this. To work hard, have discipline, everything like that.'
'I've missed boxing. I feel like the passion, the fire in my eyes, working hard — it's still there.'
Pacquiao said while his recovery times were now slightly longer, he had not noticed any drop off in his physical conditioning.
'I'm fast, I can move like I did before. I can run in the mountains with the young boxers, so I'm happy,' he said.
'I'm enjoying this training camp. There's a couple of adjustments for bodily recovery. We have to control the body, give my body time to rest and recover.'
Pacquiao, who won 12 world titles in eight different weight classes during a glittering professional career that began in 1995, refused to be drawn on whether his comeback next month would be 'one and done' or just the first step of a full-fledged return to the sport.
'It's hard to say,' he said when asked about future bouts. 'Now I'm back so one at a time, after this fight we can plan whatever we want.'
For some in boxing, however, Pacquiao's return to the ring represents an unnecessary risk.
British promoter Eddie Hearn was the latest to cast doubt on the wisdom of the Filipino's comeback earlier this month, predicting that the 30-year-old Barrios will be 'too young and too strong' for Pacquiao.
Pacquiao smiled on Wednesday when asked for his response to Hearn's remarks.
'Just watch on July 19th,' he said. 'It will be a good fight.'

Atlantic Division Teams Look Internationally in 1st Round of NBA Draft
The Boston Celtics have finished with the best record in the Atlantic Division in each of the last four seasons. That almost certainly won't be the case in 2025–26 as the 2024 NBA champions begin the season without star Jayson Tatum following Achilles tendon surgery and after the Celtics jettisoned core players Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday in salary cost-cutting moves. It made the first round of the NBA draft the first opportunity for another team to stake their claim to being the pride of the division. The Philadelphia 76ers had the highest pick of any Atlantic team and used it to get a defensive stalwart in Baylor's VJ Edgecombe third overall. The Brooklyn Nets were the most active team of the night, using each of the five picks they owned when the first round opened. They used a chunk of them to acquire players who have experience overseas, starting with BYU's Egor Demin, originally from Russia, at No. 8. The Celtics also looked internationally for their pick, taking Spain's Hugo González 28th overall. The New York Knicks, who eliminated Boston in the conference semifinals, didn't have a first-round pick after trading their 2025 first-round pick to the Nets as part of the Mikal Bridges trade. The Knicks currently hold the 50th pick in Thursday's second round. Philadelphia 76ers Needs: An athletic player to pair with a core led by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. NBA comparisons: The ESPN broadcast of the draft noted the striking physical similarities shared by Murray-Boyles and four-time All-Star Draymond Green–their height, weight, and wingspan are virtually identical. While comparisons to an NBA Defensive Player of the Year may be tough to live up to, Murray-Boyles does offer a mix of the same skill set as Green, a shot-blocker and rebounder who can also pile up steals. Boston Celtics Needs: After trading Porziņģis in a move to get under the second luxury tax apron, and with Luke Kornet and Al Horford both free agents, Boston entered the draft in need of a big man. They also needed some guard depth after trading Holiday. Who they drafted: González from Spain's Real Madrid. Sabrina Ionescu converted seven free throws in the final two minutes and made a key steal with 26 seconds left. In the first two matchups, Stewart had 51 points on 16-for-26 shooting while converting 18 of 25 free throws, her highest output against any opponent New York has faced more than once. Martin finished with 21 points for the Valkyries, who had won two straight and five of six and sold out their eighth straight game at Chase Center, where they are 5–3. Golden State welcomed back center Temi Fágbénlé after her absence to play for Great Britain in the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, but she was held out of action to rest after the long travel. Valkyries guard Carla Leite missed the game because of a back injury. Up next: The Liberty continue their four-game road trip at Phoenix on Friday night when the Valkyries will host the Chicago Sky.
