The only six beers to buy from Aldi — tried and tasted by our expert

Times2 days ago
You probably don't go to Aldi looking for the best beer you've ever tasted. I'm guessing that if you do buy there, you're looking for beer that's cheap. Aldi's range can be a bit of a minefield. But it would be snobbish and wrong to assume that cheap always means bad.
The range is divided roughly into three parts: leading mainstream brands; cheaper own-label versions designed to look and taste like those mainstream brands; and more straightforward own-label beers, produced exclusively for Aldi by British brewers.
The big commercial brands are the same as they are anywhere else — you'll have your own opinion of them, whether you love or hate them.
Aldi's lookalike versions of these same beers are sometimes intriguing but mostly bad. Carista is marginally better than Corona. Grande is more authentic than Madri, in that it is actually brewed in Spain rather than Tadcaster. Its 1897 is pretty close to Kronenbourg 1664 — both are faint on the palate, like the ghost of a decent lager, but there's nothing offensive. However, several of the other wannabes came with flavours of wet cardboard or damp dog — a sign they were heavily oxidised. This staleness is common in old beers that have been left unrefrigerated for most of their shelf life, especially those in bottles rather than cans. It's unforgivable in freshly canned beers that have almost a year to go before their sell-by date.

‘In heaven now': Heartbreaking words of six-year-old after siblings, 11 and 13, drowned on ‘last swim' on Spain holiday

THE heartbreaking words of a six-year-old whose siblings drowned on a "final swim" in Spain have been revealed. Ameiya Del Brocco, 13, and her younger brother Ricardo Junior, 11, tragically died on Tuesday while on holiday at Llarga beach in Salou, near Tarragona. 6 6 6 6 The pair - affectionately known to their loved ones as Maya and Jubs - were swept away by fierce currents as their devastated dad tried to save them. But their six-year-old brother Casius - who was also on the holiday with the two parents and six children - is now tragically having to process the deaths. Casius is said to have told his mother: "Did you know Maya and Jubs are in heaven now? Juby went to heaven in a helicopter". The heartbreaking words were told to the Daily Mail by his aunt Macalia Del Brocco after Ricardo Jnr was airlifted to hospital. Macalia said: "So that's his understanding of it, which is bittersweet, because that was what he saw. "And it's beautiful that he thinks that's what happened, but very sadly tragic at the same time." She said Ameiya and Ricardo Jnr had asked for a final swim on Tuesday after spending the day on the beach and before returning to the hotel for the night. But the children got into trouble while swimming, with their dad going into the water afterwards to try and save them and being overwhelmed himself. Emergency crews were called and pulled the trio from the water with Ricardo Snr unconscious having swallowed water. She said Ricardo Jnr was airlifted to hospital while medics desperately tried to save the father and daughter at their hotel. Boy, 17, dies on beach after being buried alive in hole in sand he dug Sadly, the two children could not be revived, but Ricardo Snr pulled through despite swallowing a lot of water. Macalia paid tribute to her niece and nephew from Erdington, Birmingham. She said of Ameiya: "She is very, very athletic. Very determined individual. When she wanted something she was adamant she was going to get it. She was very as a character, she was very sarcastic and humorous." While she said Ricardo Jnr would do "anything" to earn a few extra quid. 6 6 Macalia said: "Junior loved doing odd jobs. Frequently in the neighbor's garden, doing her hedges for her, just to earn a few extra quid. He was quite the Dell Boy." A GoFundMe page has been launched to support the grieving family, set up by cousin Holly Marquis-Johnson to cover the costs of repatriation and funerals. Holly wrote: 'During what was meant to be a joyful family holiday in Salou, Spain, Ameiya and Ricardo Junior, lovingly known to their family and friends as Maya and Jubs, heartbreakingly lost their lives in a tragic incident at sea. 'Two beautiful, bright, and deeply loved children, taken far too soon. "The pain their family is feeling is unimaginable. 'This fundraiser has been created to help ease some of the financial burden the family is now facing, covering the costs of bringing Maya and Jubs home to the UK and giving them the dignified farewell they deserve. 'We know that no amount of money can make this right. But together, we can help carry some of the weight.' The children's GoFundMe appeal has already raised more than £30,000 of its £15,000 target. Ameiya and Ricardo's haunting final photo showed them smiling on the sand just hours before the tragedy. Local officials confirmed a yellow warning flag was flying at the time to signal rough sea conditions. But lifeguards had clocked off at 8pm — with the alarm raised just before 8.50pm. A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.'

British brother and sister who drowned off beach in Spain named

A British brother and sister who both drowned off a beach in Spain have been named in reports, with more than £24,000 donated to a fundraising page set up in their honour. Ameiya and Ricardo Junior Del-Brocco, aged 13 and 11 respectively, died after getting into difficulty in the sea during a family holiday in Salou, near Tarragona, on Tuesday evening. Their father, Ricardo, had also entered the water but was rescued alive by emergency services and taken to hospital after being pulled from the water unconscious, according to local media reports. A GoFundMe page was set up on Thursday by a friend of the family, Holly Marquis-Johnson, and a relative, Macalia Del-Brocco, to help cover the cost of bringing the children's bodies home to the UK and 'ease the financial burden' of the family – and has so far raised around £25,000. Ms Marquis-Johnson paid tribute to ' Maya and Jubs', the children's nicknames, writing: 'Maya was intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman. 'Ricardo Junior was playful, kind, and always smiling. 'They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them. 'Their absence has left an unbearable silence not just for their parents, but for their whole family, who were incredibly close and shared an unbreakable bond.' She said the siblings' mother and father were 'absolutely heartbroken'. Ms Marquis-Johnson wrote: 'Their mum and dad, Shanice and Ricardo, are absolutely heartbroken. 'But they're not grieving alone. Their siblings, cousins, aunties, uncles, grandparents, and close friends are all devastated by this loss. 'Maya and Jubs were surrounded by a family who adored them, and who are now left trying to make sense of life without them. 'This fundraiser has been created to help ease some of the financial burden the family is now facing, covering the costs of bringing Maya and Jubs home to the UK, giving them the dignified farewell they deserve, and supporting their parents and loved ones during this incredibly painful time.' Emergency services were called to Llarga beach in Salou, near Tarragona, shortly after 8.45pm local time on Tuesday evening, Catalonia's Civil Protection agency said. Local police, medical and fire services all attended the incident, while a team of psychologists were also at the scene to assist the victims' family. At a news conference on Wednesday, Jose Luis Gargallo, the head of the local police force in Salou, told reporters: 'There were three people who were having serious difficulty getting out of the sea. 'There was a father with his son and daughter, of British nationality. 'When they got out, both of them, the boy and girl, aged 11 and 13, showed no signs of life. 'Attempts were made to resuscitate them with CPR, but they were unsuccessful. 'The father, fortunately, was able to be saved. He had swallowed a lot of water, he was exhausted, very fatigued, but the father was able to be saved thanks to the emergency services.' A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.'

‘Deeply loved' British brother and sister who drowned during family holiday in Spain named

A 'deeply loved' British brother and sister who drowned off a beach while on a family holiday in Spain have been named and pictured. Ameiya, 13, and Ricardo Junior, 11, died in the tragic incident on the north-eastern coast of the country on Tuesday evening, according to a GoFundMe page. Their aunt revealed the pair had gone for a swim with their father before the 'nightmare' in Salou unfolded as the trio got into trouble in the water. Emergency services were called to Llarga beach, near Tarragona, shortly after 8.45pm local time, Catalonia's Civil Protection agency said. The children, who were swept away from the beach by powerful currents, died at the scene despite immediate treatment, according to local media. Their father survived. According to BirminghamLive, their aunt Kayla Jasvinder Del-Brocco said: 'They went out to swim together with their dad as they loved the beach. 'Mum said 'don't be long' and took her little one to the bathroom. She came back out and couldn't see anyone. That's when the nightmare commenced.' Local police, medical and fire services all attended the incident, while a team of psychologists were also at the scene to assist the victims' family. The fundraiser, set up to support the family, as well as to bring the children home, said: 'Nothing could ever prepare a parent for the pain of losing a child, let alone losing two. 'During what was meant to be a joyful family holiday in Salou, Spain, Ameiya, 13, and Ricardo Junior, 11, lovingly known to their family and friends as Maya and Jubs, heartbreakingly lost their lives in a tragic incident at sea. 'Two beautiful, bright, and deeply loved children, taken far too soon. The pain their family is feeling is unimaginable.' Ameiya was described as 'intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman', while was 'playful, kind, and always smiling'. 'They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them,' said Holly Marquis-Johnson, who organised the GoFundMe. 'Their absence has left an unbearable silence not just for their parents, but for their whole family, who were incredibly close and shared an unbreakable bond.' Catalonia's Civil Protection agency initially said two brothers died, but Jose Luis Gargallo, the head of the local police force in Salou, later said it was a brother and sister. At a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Gargallo told reporters: 'There were three people who were having serious difficulty getting out of the sea. There was a father with his son and daughter, of British nationality. 'When they got out, both of them, the boy and girl, aged 11 and 13, showed no signs of life. Attempts were made to resuscitate them with CPR, but they were unsuccessful.' A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.' The deaths come after several other British people died while abroad in southern Europe this month. Scots Gary Kelly, 19, and Evan Thomson, 26, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza, while King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Liasu, 27, both from Ipswich, died after drowning in a hotel swimming pool in Albufeira, Portugal.
