KZN municipality to give poor 10,000 litres of free water a month

TimesLIVE28-05-2025
Poor households in the iLembe district municipality on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast will get 10,000 litres of water for free per month, while the rich will have to pay 13% more.
At a media briefing in KwaDukuza on Wednesday after passing a budget of R1.9bn for the financial year 2025/2026, iLembe mayor Thobani Shandu said they regretted the increased water tariffs.
'The council has adopted a 13% increase for water and sanitation, down from the proposed 13.5% tabled during the council sitting of March 26,' said Shandu.
'It is important to note our increment is aligned with uMngeni-uThukela Water's bulk tariff hike. We are unlike some of neighbours who have opted to add input costs.
'Households valued at R130,000 or less will be exempt from sewer charges. These charges will be capped to the household value of R5m.'

Director in court over 'water tanker fraud' in Eastern Cape

A company director has appeared in court on charges of fraud over a tender to supply water to communities in the Great Kei area of the Eastern Cape. Zongamele Zingisa Mafuya, 52, and her company Mafuya Investors appeared in the East London magistrate's court on Tuesday facing charges of fraud, forgery and uttering. The case stems from a tender advertised by Amatola Water in 2020 for the hiring of water tankers to supply water in various communities. 'There were numerous requirements for a company to qualify for the tender. One postulated that a licensed water tanker must be possessed by the potential service provider,' said Hawks spokesperson W/O Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana. 'In August 2020 it is alleged that the accused's company, through misrepresentation with the intention to defraud Amatola Water, ostensibly submitted a fictitious vehicle registration certificate purporting to have been supplied by the appropriate licencing authorities from the department of transport, while it was not the case. The submission made the suspect to be a suitable service provider for the tender, then she was awarded a tender to supply water to the areas.' The company rendered services and submitted invoices for payment to Amatola Water. However, discrepancies were observed during auditing and the matter was referred to the Specialised Investigating Unit and later handed over to the Hawks. The Hawks established that Amatola Water suffered a loss of more than R216,000. Mafuya was released on warning and the case was postponed to September 18 to be transferred to the East London regional court.

Tata reveals four new models for South African relaunch, with prices starting under R200,000

The first wave of products for SA. Clockwise from left: Tata Harrier, Curvv, Tiago and Punch. Image: Supplied South Africans in the market for an affordable vehicle will be even more spoiled for choice from September, when Tata relaunches as a passenger car brand. Backed by the Motus Group, which is the country's largest vehicle retailer, Tata will hit the ground running with four products, covering a significant portion of the passenger car market. Pricing will be announced in September, but company officials have said the Tiago entry-level hatchback will start below the R200,000 mark, while the Land Rover-based Harrier will cost up to R700,000. The Punch and Curvv compact SUVs will also form part of the initial line-up, with the Nexon and Sierra SUVs joining the range at a later stage. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will initially launch with a network of 40 dealerships around the country. Plans are to increase this network to around 60 by the third year of operation and 70 by the fourth. Sales ambitions are bold. The long-term goal is to become a top-five player in the passenger vehicle space, with a 6% to 8% market share. Local media got a closer look at the four new products at the launch event held in Sandton on Tuesday evening, and most were impressed by the build quality of these vehicles. Although the jury is still out until they have been driven, the vehicles appear to have come a long way since the humble Indica models that launched the brand locally 20 years ago. Here's what to expect from the new models: Tata Tiago Set to become one of Mzansi's least expensive cars, the Tiago will start under R200,000, with one source hinting it could start well below that mark. New Tebogo Malaka bribe footage verifies IDT CEO said there's ‘sixty' in Dior bag

Newly released video footage of this journalist's infamous meeting with Tebogo Malaka pours cold water on the suspended IDT CEO's denials of her role in a highly publicised bribe attempt. Daily Maverick has decided to release fuller clips from secret recordings of a meeting between this journalist and Tebogo Malaka, suspended CEO of the Independent Development Trust (IDT). Malaka can clearly be heard saying the word 'sixty', after she was asked how much money she and IDT spokesperson Phasha Makgolane had brought with them. Makgolane can also be heard confirming that the sum of money in the Dior shopping bag amounted to R60,000. The meeting at a wine farm near Stellenbosch took place on Sunday, 3 August. Daily Maverick's subsequent video and a related exposé into Malaka's Waterfall property has sent shockwaves through South Africa. The story that Malaka wanted to bury delves into a botched IDT EPWP scheme and prominent businessman Collen Mashawana's involvement in a property currently being built for Malaka inside Gauteng's Waterfall Country Estate. Mashawana funnelled at least R200,000 into House Malaka. This while his eponymous charitable foundation secured a R60-million contract from Malaka's IDT to run employment schemes for nearly 2000 people across five provinces. Scores of the EPWP workers were ripped off by the Collen Mashawana Foundation, with some of them receiving only fractions of the salaries that were due to them. Despite the video evidence, Malaka and her family trust have gone on the offensive, claiming that she had no knowledge of the money Makgolane placed on the table. She also claimed that she was somehow being 'set up' by unnamed forces. In the extended footage we can now release, Malaka can be clearly heard discussing a cash bribe and further lucrative tenders in exchange for this journalist's silence. Malaka can also be heard admitting that Makgolane had briefed her on earlier discussions over possible payments to this journalist. DM
