Verifying Israeli strikes in Lebanon, and assessing calls to scrap the two-child cap

Title: Looking into overnight strikes in Lebanon
Content: Peter Mwai and Richard Irvine-BrownBBC Verify
We've had confirmation from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) which says it has 'struck Hezbollah infrastructure sites' in southern Lebanon. We've seen multiple reports in recent hours from Lebanese and Israeli media of air strikes in southern Lebanon. Locations suggested include Ansar, Nabatieh and Mahmoudiya. We're reviewing clips posted on social media overnight but, given they are mostly in the dark and in more remote areas, it takes longer to find where they are filmed. So far, we have identified the location of this video which emerged overnight as the forecourt of a petrol station to the west of a small village called Deir Seryan.
This video was located to the west of a site that was struck, itself to the west of Deir Seryan, southern Lebanon
Daylight images are emerging now, which will give us a better handle on what has been hit and where, and perhaps what has caused the damage. We're also looking at satellite images which detect heat signatures, such as the burning after airstrikes, to give us another perspective. We'll keep you updated.

Title: Welcome to BBC Verify Live

Good morning.
Since late last night our verification team has been looking into reports that the Israeli military has carried out a series of air strikes in southern Lebanon. At the moment footage we've seen was taken last night and we're in the process of checking it's genuine. More on that to come shortly.
Elsewhere we're investigating former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown's call to use higher gambling taxes to fund the cost of scrapping the two-child benefit cap. We'll look into his comments, and assess how likely it is that increasing levies could raise the necessary funds.
As well as those stories to come here on BBC Verify Live we've got a new report from the United Nations on the number of buildings that have been destroyed across the Gaza Strip since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
Plus we'll keep across the wildfires in southern France by checking on Nasa's heat source satellites.

Explosion kills six members of army in southern Lebanon
BEIRUT, Aug 9 (Reuters) - The Lebanese army said on Saturday that six soldiers were killed and others wounded in an explosion while they were inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents in the southern city of Tyre. An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the blast, the army added in a statement. Security sources told Reuters that the explosion was caused by "remnants of the Israeli war" in the coastal city. Israel dealt major blows to Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah in an offensive last year - the climax of a conflict that began in October 2023 when the group opened fire at Israeli positions on the frontier in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas at the start of the Gaza war. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel in November ended that conflict, called on Lebanon to confiscate all "unauthorized" weapons across the country and said Israel would stop offensive operations against Lebanese targets.

Controversial band Bob Vylan set to take stage at Boardmasters Festival in Newquay
Controversial punk rap duo Bob Vylan are due to appear at the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay on Sunday 10th August, despite a campaign to have them banned. The band hit headlines when they led chants of 'death to the IDF [Israel Defence Forces]' during a televised appearance at Glastonbury Festival in June this year. The Prime Minister condemned the comments, Glastonbury organisers said they were appalled, and after complaints from the public to the BBC, it apologised and said the footage should not have been broadcast. The band also had tour dates cancelled and their US visas were revoked. Hundreds of people also wrote to Cornwall Council, the licensing authority for the Boardmasters Festival, asking them to stop the band from taking to the stage. One councillor, Dulcie Tudor, said it was the most concerted campaign she'd seen since being on the council. The band later said on social media: "We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people. We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine." Organisers of Boardmasters insisted Bob Vylan would remain part of their line up and released a statement to ITV News West Country saying: 'Following productive meetings with Devon and Cornwall Police and relevant partners from our Safety Advisory Group, we now have an agreed plan in place that ensures the event continues to meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and community accountability. 'Boardmasters is committed to being a space where people from all backgrounds feel welcome and safe. We do not tolerate hate speech, incitement to violence, or behaviour that puts anyone at risk, and we will continue to uphold these principles throughout the event and beyond. 'Our decision to proceed with the performance reflects a balance of factors, including the festival's careful consideration of recent concerns, our ongoing dialogue with stakeholders, and the band's agreement to the terms of their participation. 'We have been clear with the band and their representatives about our expectations, particularly the importance of maintaining a respectful and safe environment for everyone attending, working at, or involved in the festival. 'Boardmasters remains focused on delivering a safe, respectful, and well-managed event.' Bob Vylan also posted on X on Thursday that they will be headlining another event with a link to Burn It Down Festival in Torquay later this month.
