PSX sees mild recovery

KARACHI: The PSX saw a mild recovery last week ended on May 30, supported by improved economic policy clarity. However, gains remained limited as investors braced for potential tax-related announcements in the upcoming Federal Budget.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at 119,691 points on Friday, recording a gain of 588 points or 0.49 percent on a week-on-week (WoW) basis, up from 119,102.67 points at the close of the previous. Meanwhile, average daily trading volumes increased by 35 percent WoW, rising to 662 million shares compared to 491.5 million shares in the preceding week.
Market capitalization rose by Rs. 118 billion during the week, reaching Rs. 14.503 trillion compared to Rs. 14.385 trillion in the previous week.
BRIndex100 also gained 103.45 points during the last week to close at 12,842.51 points compared to 12,739.06 points a week earlier. Average daily turnover at BRIndex100 was 575.59 million shares. BRIndex30 up by 288.93 points on a week-on-week basis to 37,794.85 points with the daily average share trading volumes of 432 million.
Analysts noted that despite the uptick, the market remained largely range-bound, moving within a narrow band of 1,770 points, weighed down by uncertainty surrounding potential revenue measures in the Federal Budget FY26. Investors remained cautious ahead of the upcoming federal budget amid growing concerns over proposed tax measures.
On the economic side, the week commenced with IMF concluding its visit to Pakistan without reaching an agreement on certain budget items, leading the government to reschedule the budget presentation to June 10, 2025. However, the virtual negotiations are continuing, with both sides to focus on measures to enhance tax revenues and curtailing expenditures.
Meanwhile, China reaffirmed its commitment to refinance $3.7 billion in commercial loans denominated in the Chinese currency, before the end of June-2025.
In other developments, the SBP's net buying from the currency markets stood at $223 million in Feb-2025 to further strengthen foreign exchange reserves, bringing the cumulative purchases of $5.9 billion during 8 months of FY25.
In the recently held T-bill auction, SBP raised Rs772 billion against the target of Rs650 billion, with yields remaining largely flat across different maturities. Moreover, SBP reserves also rose by $70 million week on week to $11.52 billion.
According to AHL Research, the KSE-100 index remained range-bound throughout the week, weighed down by uncertainty regarding potential revenue measures in the upcoming Federal Budget FY26.
Foreign investors remained net sellers during the week, recording an outflow of $5.57 million, which was largely absorbed by local buyers. Overall, sentiment stayed cautious as market participants awaited clarity on fiscal policies and tax reforms expected in the upcoming budget announcement.
While analyzing on the monthly basis, Topline sales desk stated that the benchmark KSE 100 Index gained 7.5 percent on month on month (MoM) basis, this gain can be attributed to cut in policy rate by 100bps by SBP to 11 percent in its monetary policy meeting, citing the improvement in inflation outlook relative to the previous assessments and approval of first review of EFF by IMF board along with a new facility under Resilience and Sustainability Facility of $1.4 billion.
Analysts at AHL Brokerage house stated that market is expected to remain positive in the coming weeks, with developments around the upcoming federal budget likely to drive short-term sentiment, along with room for more rate cut in the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting as it forecasted inflation stands at 7.0 percent in next fiscal year.
The KSE100 is anticipated to sustain its upward trajectory, with a target of 165,215 points by December 2025, primarily driven by strong earnings in fertilizers, sustained ROEs in banks, and improving cash flows of E&Ps and OMCs, benefiting from falling interest rates and economic stability, they added.

PSX notches another record close above 150.5k

Bulls continued to maintain their firm grip over the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday as the KSE-100 index roared past 150.5k points, a historic high that came on the back of Moody's ratings upgrade for banks and encouraging corporate-sector earnings. Robust interest from local institutions in stock buying and a modest current account deficit for July also lent support to the stock market, which rose 820 points, or 0.55%, and closed the day at 150,591. 'Stocks closed at an all-time high after Moody's Ratings upgraded the local and foreign-currency long-term deposit ratings of five leading Pakistani banks to Caa1 from Caa2, following its recent decision to raise the country's sovereign rating,' commented Ahsan Mehanti of Arif Habib Corp. 'Upbeat data showing $284 million in current account deficit amid strong remittances, rising exports and rupee stability powered the market's record close,' he said. Market Snapshot – August 20, 2025 Unlock yesterday's market moves and stay one step ahead! #August20 — PSX (@pakstockexgltd) August 20, 2025 Topline Securities, in its report, said bulls showed no signs of fatigue at the local bourse, storming ahead to notch the intra-day record high of 1,490 points before settling at 150,591, up 820 points (+0.55%). The upward momentum was underpinned by better-than-expected corporate earnings and a strong liquidity push from local institutions, lifting the benchmark index to uncharted heights, it said, adding that investor confidence remained buoyant as market heavyweights attracted robust flows, reinforcing the bullish undertone. The rally was largely fuelled by index heavyweights including Systems Limited, Bank AL Habib, NBP, MCB Bank and Bank Alfalah, which collectively contributed 503 points to the upward trajectory. Market participation remained robust, with traded volumes surging to 668 million shares and traded value reaching Rs40.7 billion. Govt launches risk coverage scheme for small farmers & underserved areas

The government, in a bid to enhance access to credit for small and marginalised farmers, has rolled out a new risk coverage scheme for banks and microfinance banks (MFBs). According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the initiative is aimed at encouraging financial institutions to extend fresh financing to farmers by offering government-backed coverage against potential loan losses. Under the scheme, which will remain effective from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, banks will be able to provide production loans for crops, as well as loans for dairy, livestock, and fisheries, with the government sharing part of the risk. The scheme will cover all commercial banks/Islamic banks/specialised banks/MFBs. Small and subsistence holding farmers from Sindh and Punjab, and all types of landholding farmers from KPK, Balochistan, AJK & Gilgit and Baltistan can benefit from the scheme. Under the scheme, financing of up to Rs3 million will be provided, with a tenor of up to 12 months except for sugarcane, where it is 18 months. 'The loan will be considered as a loss in case the repayment of loan/installment is overdue by 12 months,' said SBP. Under the scheme, the government would provide 10% first loss coverage on the outstanding agri loan portfolio, applicable to new borrowers and incremental financing to existing ones. Importantly, payment of a risk coverage claim shall not obviate banks from the right of recovery of the defaulted amount. 'Banks shall continue with their regular procedure for recovery of loans,' said SBP. To incentivise banks to attract new borrowers, the Federal Government will pay Rs10,000 per new borrower to the bank, to meet the operational cost, to the extent of the net increase in the number of borrowers over the previous year. 'Banks shall evaluate their net increase in number of borrowers at the end of each fiscal year and lodge the claims electronically with Financial Inclusion Support Department (FISD), SBP BSC within 15 working days,' said SBP.

PSX scales new all-time high as positive momentum continues

There was no stopping the bullish momentum at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), buoyed by earnings optimism, rupee stability, and strong institutional activity from local and foreign investors. The benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at a new all-time high on Wednesday. Positive sentiments prevailed throughout the trading session, pushing the benchmark index to an intra-day high of 151,261.67. At close, the benchmark KSE-100 Index settled at 150,591, an increase of 820.26 points or 0.55%. In a key development for Pakistan's corporate sector, Moody's Ratings upgraded the local and foreign-currency long-term deposit ratings of five Pakistani banks: Allied Bank Limited (ABL), Habib Bank Ltd (HBL), MCB Bank Limited (MCB), National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Ltd (UBL) to Caa1 from Caa2. Rating actions followed Moody's decision to upgrade the government of Pakistan's local and foreign currency issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings to Caa1 from Caa2, to reflect Pakistan's improving external position, supported by its progress in reform implementation under the IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme. On Tuesday, the PSX extended its record-setting rally as the benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at an all-time high of 149,770.75 points, up 1,574 points or 1.06%. Internationally, global share markets came under pressure on Wednesday after a tech-led selloff on Wall Street, while the dollar gained some ground ahead of a key meeting of central bankers later in the week. Stock futures pointed to a lower opening in Europe and most Asian bourses were in the red, with tech-heavy indexes in Taiwan and South Korea among the biggest losers, in part due to worries about the Trump administration's growing influence on companies in the sector. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slid more than 1%, while EUROSTOXX 50 futures lost 0.64% and DAX futures shed 0.63%. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.27% and Nasdaq futures lost 0.44%, extending a fall from the cash session overnight. Japan's Nikkei lost 1.7% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Tech Index shed 1.3%.
