BlunderBoks get roasting from Rassie
Kolisi described the defeat as unacceptable and slammed his team for taking their foot off the pedal after they surrendered a 22-0 lead against a Wallaby side who defied the odds to topple the world champions.
An embarrassed Erasmus said he could not butter up the loss and said his team were really bad on the day.
SA started like a house on fire and scored 22 points in the opening 18 minutes, but they imploded inexplicably when they conceded 38 unanswered points.
'We let ourselves down today on things that we worked on like discipline and the breakdown' Kolisi said.
'The Boks want to thank everyone who supported us and we are sorry about the performance.
'But we will come again next week [in the second Test in Cape Town].
'Australia definitely won the breakdown battle and we have to take that on the chin.
'It is unacceptable the way we performed after starting like that and then taking our foot off the pedal.
'When it came to the breakdown, we would fight and get into Australia's 22 and then they would steal the ball.
'It is something we knew they would do because they are good at it.
'It is hard to put in words, but credit to the Australian team because they played really well.'
'Though we started well, we didn't keep building. Our heads dropped and our shoulders slumped.
'That is disappointing because we know what's expected when you wear this jersey.'
Erasmus said his team had been tactically outplayed.
'This is probably one of the most embarrassing press conferences I've done in a while,' he said.
'I can butter this up to sound cool and respectful, but we were just really dog s**t on the day.
'The Wallabies were good, but we made them better with our performance.
'To be 22-0 up, we did the same against Italy, when 28-3 up, and then we let teams back in.
'We gave them one or two soft tries.
'They beat us in the line-outs.
'For the first 25 minutes we were good at the breakdown, but after Kolisi got injured and Marco van Staden had to go for an HIA [head injury assessment they bullied us there.
'We as coaches got it terribly wrong.
'It wasn't just tactical — they also physically dominated us.
'The longer the game went on, the stronger they got.
'At altitude, that's supposed to be us. It shows what Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt is building there.
'Grant Williams had so many breaks, Manie had so many breaks, Edwill van der Merwe too.
'Their kick-to-ruck ratio was really good — we only kicked nine times in the second half.
'Maybe the players felt there was space, but that's coaching, that's on us.
'We must still build the innings. Twenty-two nil is not winning a game — it ended up losing by almost 20 points.
'The saddest thing is five log points for them and we didn't even fight back to take the bonus point away. So we're on zero, they're on five.
Erasmus said the Bok management team would take a hard look at themselves after the defeat.
'From now until next Saturday we'll take a lot of flak, but when we take the credit when we're doing well, then we must take the flak when we're doing badly.
'We are very disappointed, feeling bad for our supporters and our players.'
Scorers:
SA 22 — Tries: Kurt-Lee Arendse, André Esterhuizen and Siya Kolisi. Conversions: Manie Libbok 2; Penalty: Manie Libbok.
Australia 38 — Tries: Dylan Pietsch, Harry Wilson (2,) Joseph Akuso-Sua'ali, Jorgensen, Tom Wright. Conversions: James O'Connor (4).

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma exited to see what 'big talker' Dewald Brevis can bring to ODI's
Proteas captain Temba Bavuma and his Australian counterpart Mitchell Marsh pose ahead of the three-match ODI series, starting in Cairns on Tuesday. Picture: AFP Image: AFP THE Proteas have reverted from their customary playing XI reveal on the eve of the match, but all signs point to Dewald Brevis being handed an ODI debut against Australia in the series opener in Cairns on Tuesday. Brevis was the Proteas' standout performer during the preceding T20I's with the 22-year-old enjoying a breakout international series. The youngster smashed a 41-ball century in Darwin and a half-century in Cairns and has everyone Down Under salivating at his clean-ball striking. Captain Temba Bavuma was keen to see Brevis transfer this form to the longer white-ball format. 'I think it's always exciting when you see the young faces,' Bavuma said at the pre-match media engagement. 'Obviously, the big talker guy like Brevis, you know, putting up his hand and showing what he's what he's capable of. 'So, again, excited to see what he can also bring within the one-day stuff and all the other guys.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Bavuma hasn't played since the glorious day on June 14 at Lord's when he led the Proteas to the World Test Championship final success at Lord's. The skipper, of course, sustained a hamstring injury during his second innings heroics and missed the subsequent Test tour of Zimbabwe. The 35-year-old, though, was inundated with various media and sponsor obligations upon the Proteas' return, which included a visit to his childhood neighbourhood Langa in Cape Town to present the golden WTC mace to his hometown. He feels this has refreshed not only the body, but also the mind ahead of resumption of battles with Australia. 'Yeah, it's been a bit busy back home,' Bavuma said. 'Kind of just getting accustomed, I guess, to all the appreciation and how, I guess, things have been a bit different. 'Also had some time to just be away from the game, get the body strong again. It feels good. I guess it's a case of just keep looking after it a lot more rehab than I usually do. 'Always good to be in Australia again. Yeah, quite looking forward to the next couple of days. raring to go, looking forward to the games ahead. Everything feels good.' An in-form youngster has been added to South Africa's squad ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia 🙌 Details 👇 — ICC (@ICC) August 18, 2025

Rassie to rethink make-up of Bok team for second Test against Wallabies
The Springboks are set to make some changes to their side for the second Wallabies Test, with Cheslin Kolbe and Damian de Allende expected to be back. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says they will need to change their lineup ahead of the second Rugby Championship Test against the Wallabies in Cape Town, after a disastrous first Test at Ellis Park over the weekend. The Aussies stunned a packed Jozi crowd, recovering from a 22-0 deficit after just 18 minutes, to score six unanswered tries to pick up a full house of points, and clinch their first win at the iconic ground in the professional era, and just second in their history after their only other win in 1963. It is an incredible turnaround from the men from Down Under, after they were thumped 33-7 and 30-12 on their home turf by the Boks a year ago. Speaking to the media after the match on Saturday, Erasmus said the coaches had to look at themselves before the players, and said that the team would accept any negative feedback coming their way after a dismal effort. 'I can sit here and say they beat us in most departments. As coaches, we got it terribly wrong, and we must look at ourselves before we point fingers at the players,' said Erasmus. 'A player doesn't just do what he wants out there, we guide them and we pick the combinations. If it doesn't work, maybe the combinations were wrong, maybe the plans were wrong, maybe the half-time talk was terrible. 'From now until next Saturday, we'll take a lot of flak. We take the credit when we are doing well, so we must take the flak when we're doing badly. We're very disappointed, and feeling bad for our supporters and our players.' Team changes Erasmus said that the team for the game at the Cape Town Stadium had already been announced internally, but that it was likely to change due to the result on the Highveld. Cheslin Kolbe and Damian de Allende, who missed the match due to injury niggles will almost certainly be slotted straight back into the starting team, while Handre Pollard will be another likely starter, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu could come onto the bench. Captain Siya Kolisi picked up an injury in the first half at Ellis Park, and it is unknown if he will be fit for the second Test, and if he is he might not be wearing the No 8 jersey as he did in the first Test. 'We have already picked next week's team internally, but as we have always said, if we lose momentum or don't play well, and we did both, that things could change,' explained Erasmus. 'So the players already know who has been picked to play next week. But we had a chat now in the change room and that team will probably change a little bit. 'We wanted to get Ethan Hooker in, we wanted to give Canan (Moodie) a start, and we wanted to give Krappie (Morne van den Berg) a start, but (now) we will have to rethink it.' Erasmus will name his lineup around midday on Tuesday.

Is Springboks' Rugby Championship title defence already over?
Before the opening round of the Rugby Championship, the Springboks would have been widely expected to secure a bonus-point victory over the Wallabies at Ellis Park to start their title defence with momentum and confidence. Instead, the Springboks are reeling from a shock defeat, which also saw them fail to even collect a losing bonus-point. By contrast, the All Blacks secured a full five log points with a big win in Argentina. The Springboks now simply have to bounce back in their 'rematch' against Australia this weekend, but even if they can achieve this, they will then need to navigate extremely challenging fixtures against arch-rivals New Zealand. Besides the improvements the All Blacks have made over the last year, they will also be excited by the prospect of facing the Springboks at their home fortresses in Auckland and Wellington. From there, the Springboks will welcome Argentina to Durban before finishing the tournament against the same opposition in London, where this neutral venue could add an air of unpredictability to proceedings. All in all, it looks set to be extremely difficult for the Springboks to get their Rugby Championship campaign back on track, with even one more defeat almost certain to bring an end to any hope of a title defence. 'We still want to win the Rugby Championship,' prop Ox Nche insisted. 'Next weekend is a must-win Test (against Australia in Cape Town), and we have to get as many points as we can.'
