ASEAN 2045: PETRA to enhance scope of regional energy cooperation
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has voiced its full support for the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, calling it a pivotal step towards realising the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also in charge of PETRA, said the ministry is committed to enhancing regional energy cooperation by finalising strategic frameworks and action plans under the Priority Economic Deliverables (PED), aimed at fostering a just and structured energy transition.
He said among key initiatives undertaken to reach the goals is the upcoming ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030, which will serve as the framework for long-term regional energy strategies towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy system across ASEAN by 2045.
Fadillah also underscored the importance of advancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) through the implementation of a Memorandum of Cooperation, which will facilitate interconnectivity between member states' electricity grids.
'This will accelerate regional grid integration and enable broader adoption of clean energy sources and pave the way for cross-border power trading and greater use of renewable energy,' he said in a statement today.
Fadillah said two other regional agreements, namely the Trans ASEAN Gas Pipeline Agreement (TAGP) and the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA), will serve as foundational frameworks to ensure secure and reliable supply chains of natural gas and petroleum, which are essential for supporting a phased transition to low-carbon energy systems, especially in power generation.
'Through these initiatives, PETRA is committed to supporting the Kuala Lumpur Declaration of ASEAN 2045, including efforts to position energy transition as a strategic pillar in building a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient ASEAN Economic Community.
'This commitment aligns with Malaysia MADANI, the national development framework that champions sustainability, well-being, and innovation. It also strengthens regional collaboration for the shared benefit of all ASEAN communities,' he said.
Yesterday, ASEAN leaders adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, which set the foundation to guide the region's development and cooperation over the next two decades.
The declaration, endorsed during the 46th ASEAN Summit here, represents a significant milestone in the bloc's commitment to building a more resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred regional community.
According to the Declaration, ASEAN member states reaffirmed their collective resolve to enhance regional unity, promote inclusive and sustainable development and strengthen institutional capacity to respond effectively to existing and future megatrends.
The document also envisions ASEAN as the epicentre of growth in the Indo-Pacific region, with a strong emphasis on regional solidarity, a shared identity and equitable access to economic opportunities among its people.

(TNB pic) PETALING JAYA : Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has dismissed a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule on WhatsApp as fake, urging the public not to fall for any misinformation. In a statement today, TNB clarified that the schedule, which bears the TNB logo and claims of a tariff hike, is fake and was not issued by the company. 'The false schedule misleadingly suggests a tariff increase that features the TNB logo,' it said. 'The circulation of such false information is creating unnecessary confusion among customers.' TNB stressed that as of today, no official announcement has been made regarding any changes to electricity tariffs affecting consumers. The company also reminded the public to be responsible with the content they share online. 'We strongly advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information,' it said. For accurate and updated information, TNB urged consumers to refer only to official government and TNB platforms for any updates on electricity tariffs. Last December, TNB proposed a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), for implementation from July 1, 2025. The base tariff under RP3 had been set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof then said no decision had been made on the new tariff as the government was still finalising the matter. Fadillah is also the energy transition and water transformation minister.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- ASEAN has charted a bold socio-cultural agenda to uplift the lives of over 680 million people across the region by 2045, aiming to forge a resilient, inclusive and people-centred community in the face of growing global uncertainties. The plan builds on the foundation laid by the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint 2025 and responds to emerging challenges such as ageing populations, digital exclusion, public health threats, climate change and widening social inequality. 'It also recognises the opportunities arising form emerging megatrends such as digital technology advancement and green and blue economies,' according to the ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future document. Among the key goals of the ASCC plan is to build a people-centred and interconnected community through equitable digital access, greater regional mobility, and enhanced cooperation in education, lifelong learning and social protection. The strategy also envisions a caring and inclusive ASEAN that promotes shared prosperity by investing in gender equality, women's empowerment, and stronger protections for migrant workers, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. Human security and resilience feature prominently, with ASEAN pledging to address mental health, ageing, and natural disasters through partnerships between governments, civil society and the private sector. 'Youth engagement is a high priority. The plan outlines measures to equip young people to lead in innovation, climate action and entrepreneurship, while promoting active participation in ASEAN's socio-economic development. 'Women's empowerment is another central focus. ASEAN seeks to increase female representation in decision-making, develop gender-responsive policies, and invest in care infrastructure to reduce unpaid work and improve well-being,' the document read. The ASCC Plan also highlights the importance of preserving ASEAN's rich cultural heritage. It seeks to strengthen regional identity through arts, education, digital platforms and community-based initiatives, particularly in underserved areas.
