Predicting NFL standings for each division in 2025

USA Today2 days ago
With the season nearing opening kickoffs for all 32 NFL teams, we're taking a look into the crystal football. The prediction? A glimpse into how the divisions will wind up at the end of the season.
Will there be repeat winners? Surprises? A mix of everything? Some teams look like powerhouses while others are already headed for the 2026 NFL draft.
Here's how the 2025 NFL divisions will stack up…
AFC East
No surprises here, the Bills remain light years ahead of the competition. And no one will remember who finished second, much like few recall who finished behind Secretariat in his Belmont romp (it was Twice A Prince, the longest shot in the field of five).
Prediction: 1. Bills - 2. Patriots - 3. Jets - 4. Dolphins
AFC North
This division has three teams that would be considered playoff contenders and one that is destined to a high draft pick. Hopefully, the Cleveland Browns won't fall so far that they wind up with the first pick in the 2026 draft and have to decide whether to choose Arch Manning should he declare out of Texas. It seems like Cleveland already has a surplus of ordinary quarterbacks, although one did win a Super Bowl for another AFC North team. Typical.
Prediction: 1. Ravens - 2. Bengals - 3. Steelers - 4. Browns
AFC South
This division is another one-horse race — except, the team named for a horse isn't going to be that franchise. Unless the Houston Texans decide to stumble and fumble, they will rumble through the AFC South. Does it really matter who finishes behind the reigning division champs? (It doesn't.)
Prediction: 1. Texans - 2. Colts - 3. Jaguars - 4. Titans
AFC West
One tough division despite how dominant the Chiefs have been. Sean Payton and the Broncos are trending upward. Jim Harbaugh turned the Chargers' culture around in a year. Pete Carroll may act young and chipper but the Raiders will test every bit of his enthusiasm.
Prediction: 1. Chiefs - 2. Chargers - 3. Broncos - 4. Raiders
NFC East
It has been a long time since a team repeated as champions in this division. That, along with all the roster shuffling, is enough to give pause on whether the Philadelphia Eagles will be able to win the NFC East again. The challenge will be testing, but Washington figures to level off after its surprising season in 2024. The Cowboys are a quagmire. And Brian Daboll will likely be looking for another job after the Giants have another poor season. Jaxson Dart may have gone to Ole Miss, but he will not have the career Eli Manning had.
Prediction: 1. Eagles - 2. Cowboys - 3. Commanders - 4. Giants
NFC North
The Lions are a force. They have everything going for them. However, Dan Campbell's coordinators exited, which should dent the team. Matt LaFleur and the Packers are rock solid. Would love to stop reading about Jordan Love, injuries, and procedures. They are redundant season to season—still, time to give Green Bay a chance to run by Detroit in the NFC North. The Vikings will falter and have to wonder if the faith they put in J.J. McCarthy was worth it. Ben Johnson will start the Bears moving forward … slowly.
Prediction: 1. Packers - 2. Lions - 3. Vikings - 4. Bears
NFC South
Welcome to the land of mediocrity. Todd Bowles and his Bucs will squeak to another division title. Their NFC South dynasty will not be remembered for the series of division championships. It will be the tale of being the best of an ordinary lot. The Carolina Panthers will get better, just not sure they are ready to win nine or 10 games, which it will take to gain the postseason. The Falcons are going to watch Michael Penix Jr. How fitting would it be if the Saints wound up with the first pick and somehow were able to land Arch Manning on the team his grandfather led?
Prediction: 1. Buccaneers - 2. Panthers - 3. Falcons - 4. Saints
NFC West
A strong division with all four teams set to contend. Yes, that means the Arizona Cardinal are going to continue to improve. They won't win it all but they also won't finish last. With all the back issues Matthew Stafford is having there have to be concerns about how many games he will play for the Rams. The Seahawks have Sam Darnold, who has a solid corps of receivers. And no one should be surprised when the 49ers flip the script on their 2024 record.
Prediction: 1. 49ers - 2. Seahawks - 3. Cardinals - 4. Rams

Dillon Gabriel insists 'There's entertainers and there's competitors' remark was not swipe at Shedeur Sanders

Dillon Gabriel appeared to throw some shade in addition to his 18 passes during his preseason debut on Saturday for the Cleveland Browns. But it wasn't directed at fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders, as many immediately speculated. After sitting out the Browns' preseason opener with a hamstring injury, Gabriel got the start versus the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and played respectably. He completed 13 of 18 passes, but one of them was returned for a pick 6 by Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba. However, Gabriel made a remark during a televised interview that quickly raised eyebrows. Speaking on the sideline after Tyler Huntley took over at QB, he appeared to take a swipe at Sanders, with whom he's competing for a spot on the Browns' depth chart and perhaps a spot on the roster. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Asked by reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala to share his thoughts on "tuning out the noise" and not letting it interfere with his preparation, Gabriel seemingly addressed something unrelated to the question. "There's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that," Gabriel said. "But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on." Interpreting that comment as a dig at Sanders could be taking the remark out of context. But the exact exchange went like this: Kinkhabwala: "You gave us some fabulous wisdom on how you tune out the noise and don't let it infiltrate yourself; will you share that with everybody at home?" Gabriel: "Yeah, it's just part of it. You know, there's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on." Gabriel was asked about demonstrating leadership and talking to receivers and running backs on the sideline in the previous question. So it's possible he was continuing some thoughts on that, even though Kinkhabwala went on to another question. Another possibility was that Gabriel remembered what he heard at Oregon — perhaps head coach Dan Lanning, in particular — about facing Sanders and Colorado. Lanning infamously made a pregame locker room speech in which he told his players, "They're fighting for clicks, we're fighting for wins." However, Bo Nix was Oregon's quarterback that season. Gabriel was at Oklahoma. And the Ducks did not play the Buffaloes during his lone season at Oregon after transferring. Yet it's not difficult to imagine that Gabriel talked to his former coaches and teammates before he was preparing to compete against Colorado's outspoken QB in a competition for a roster spot. As a third-round draft pick, Gabriel's place on the roster seems more assured than Sanders, who was selected in the fifth round. Yet Sanders has received decidedly more attention from media and fans because of his drop down the NFL draft board and his self-promoting persona at Colorado that continued leading up to the draft. In his preseason debut, Sanders threw for 138 yards and completed 14 of 23 passes with two touchdowns. Gabriel's remark, especially the "entertainers" crack, didn't seem to be addressing the media, Yet he insisted otherwise when asked about it after Saturday's game, saying he was referring to the media with that. (Other NFL reporters supported that notion, faulting the league's social media channels for posting the clip out of context.) "I'm all about my team and each other," Gabriel said. Though Gabriel was actually taking a shot at the media, not Sanders, the comment will still likely be picked apart and become a topic during the upcoming week of practice. As a result, Gabriel possibly created the very noise he was asked about tuning out.

New York Giants vs. New York Jets FREE LIVE STREAM (8/16/25): Watch NFL preseason game online

How to watch: Fans can watch the game for free via a trial of DirecTV. Here's what you need to know: What: NFL Preseason Who: Giants vs. Jets When: August 16, 2025 (8/16/25) Where: Metlife Stadium Time: 7 p.m. ET TV: NFL Network Live stream: DirecTV, Sling, Fubo *** Here's a preview capsule via the Associated Press: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner sat out the team's joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday because of a sore calf. Gardner participated in practice Tuesday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park but wasn't spotted during the teams' session at the Giants' facility Wednesday. 'Sauce wasn't out (there) today,' coach Aaron Glenn said after practice. 'He had some calf soreness. We'll continue to evaluate him and see exactly where he's at.' Gardner has been one of the Jets' best players since being drafted fourth overall out of Cincinnati in 2022. He was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was an All-Pro selection in his first two NFL seasons. The 24-year-old Gardner had a slightly off season, by his standards, last year but is still considered one of the league's elite cornerbacks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, making him the NFL's highest-paid player at his position. He also is the focal point of a new-look secondary for the Jets, who have Gardner and free-agent signing Brandon Stephens at cornerback, with Michael Carter as the nickelback and free-agent signing Andre Cisco and Tony Adams at safety. The Jets don't have another full practice before their preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night. Glenn declined to say whether he would play his starters in that game — 'The plan is the plan,' is all he would divulge — so it's unclear if Gardner would participate even if healthy. Typically, teams play their starters for a quarter or a half in the second game, using it as a warmup for the regular season while backups typically play the final preseason game. Rookie quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, was back on the field after leaving practice Tuesday with an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot. He didn't participate in team drills. 'Held him out, but I anticipate him playing this week,' Glenn said. 'So that's good.' Cook is one of just three healthy quarterbacks on the Jets' roster, with starter Justin Fields and Adrian Martinez. Glenn announced Tuesday that veteran backup Tyrod Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery and wouldn't play the rest of the preseason.
