U.S. court case sees Saks Global accuse lender of contributing to Bay's demise
TORONTO – Saks Global is putting some of the blame for Hudson's Bay's demise on one of the faltering department store's top lenders. A letter Saks Global filed in a New York lawsuit against Pathlight Capital LP says the lender's failure to support Hudson's Bay and its move to allegedly deprive it of much-needed financing led it to seek creditor protection. Saks Global was formed last year, when Hudson's Bay purchased Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman and spun them out with its existing Saks Fifth Avenue into a new company. Court documents say that transaction was made possible in part because Pathlight agreed to release Saks Global from obligations under a loan the Bay had in exchange for millions in payments. Now, Pathlight is suing Saks Global because it has yet to be paid US$8.8 million it is owed. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Canadian gold miner seeks mediation in African dispute
Barrick has said its employees remain in detention in Mali, and exports from its mine have been blocked for months Canadian company Barrick Mining has appealed to the World Bank's arbitration tribunal to settle a legal dispute with Mali. The miner currently risks losing control of its gold operations in the West African country, Reuters reported on Friday. The request to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) comes ahead of a Malian court ruling scheduled for June 2 on the government's application to place the mine under provisional administration. Barrick's Loulo-Gounkoto complex, which produced nearly 700,000 ounces of gold in 2023, has been closed since January after Mali seized three tons of gold from the mine over alleged unpaid taxes - a claim Barrick denies. According to a filing on the ICSID's website, the mining giant is seeking "provisional measures" to prevent further actions by the Sahel state's military leadership that could exacerbate the dispute. The former French colony is one of Africa's top gold producers, with large-scale operations such as the Loulo-Gounkoto mines, which are 80% owned by Barrick and 20% by the Malian government. Since taking power in a coup in 2020, the new leadership in Bamako has sought more revenue from the sector to boost state income amid rising gold prices. In 2023, a new mining code was introduced allowing the military government to claim a stake of up to 30% in any new projects. Tensions escalated in late 2024 when four Barrick executives were detained and a warrant was issued for CEO Mark Bristow, all on charges of money laundering and financing of terrorism - allegations the company says are untrue. Negotiations between the two sides recently collapsed after Mali demanded a lump-sum payment of 125 billion CFA francs ($197 million) in unpaid revenues, while Barrick proposed a structured payment plan. Earlier this week, the mining firm issued a statement claiming that the Malian government's attempt to "interfere with Loulo-Gounkoto's operations is without precedent or lawful justification." "This latest escalation by the Malian government follows the continued unlawful detention of several Barrick employees - now held for over five months - and the ongoing blockage of gold exports from the complex," the company said. Barrick is not the only Western company under pressure in the Sahel region. In neighboringNiger, French nuclear fuel firm Orano lost its license to the Imouraren uranium mine in 2024. Canada signs statement of intent with CERN to strengthen scientific collaboration

That is why the Government of Canada is supporting international scientific collaboration and investing in research that pushes the boundaries of human knowledge. Today, the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Economic Development Canada for Quebec Regions, announced that Canada has signed a statement of intent with the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known as CERN, to strengthen collaboration on future planning for large research infrastructure facilities, and on novel and advanced techniques and tools. The statement of intent was signed in April by Canada's Deputy Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Philip Jennings, and CERN's Director-General, Fabiola Gianotti. CERN is a world-leading research facility in Geneva, Switzerland, focused on fundamental physics, with a mission to uncover what the universe is made of and how it works. Canada contributes to CERN's work through advanced equipment, scientific expertise and top talent, with TRIUMF-Canada's particle accelerator centre-serving as the primary bridge for these efforts. The statement of intent ensures Canada will continue to be a world leader in physics, contributing to and advancing research on fundamental questions about the mysteries of the universe. By signing the statement of intent, Canada and CERN signalled their intent to enhance collaboration in planning future projects to foster breakthrough scientific discoveries. This includes ongoing studies on the Future Circular Collider (FCC), CERN's next flagship project. This proposed higher-performance particle collider would eventually replace CERN's Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, which is helping scientists study the basic building blocks of the universe. Should the FCC be selected to move forward, Canada intends to collaborate on its construction and the physics experiments that will take place at the research facility, subject to appropriate domestic approvals. Canada and CERN also intend to promote joint efforts in developing advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, and their use in particle physics research and beyond. Through this partnership, Canada is advancing human understanding of our universe and ensuring Canadian researchers and scientists are leading the way.
