Ladli Behna aid will now cost state 22,000 cr/year
Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh govt would yearly require over Rs 22,000 crore for the Ladli Behna scheme after announcements made by the chief minister a day earlier to increase monthly financial assistance to Rs 1,500 from the existing Rs 1,250 from Diwali.
Through direct benefit transfer, the govt gives Rs 1,250 every month to over 1.27 crore women beneficiaries under the scheme. The Ladli Behna scheme, launched before the 2023 assembly elections, turned out to be a game changer and led the BJP to retain power with a thumping majority.
During the assembly elections, the govt promised to gradually increase the amount under the scheme to Rs 3,000 per month. Sources point out that close to two years of the govt's tenure is over, and it was important to make the announcement to increase the money from the existing Rs 1,250, which is why it was announced.
At present, the govt spends around Rs 1,551 crore every month under the scheme, providing Rs 1,250 per beneficiary.
With the proposed increase to Rs 1,500 from Diwali, the monthly expenditure is expected to rise to around Rs 1,861 crore. This Rs 250 hike per beneficiary would result in an additional monthly burden of Rs 310.30 crore. The amount would yearly cross Rs 22,000 crore. However, the number of women beneficiaries under the scheme has come down to 1.27 crore from 1.31 crore since it was launched.
The reason for the decrease in women beneficiaries is that the govt has not opened new registrations under the scheme since August 20, 2023, while the upper age limit in the scheme is 60 years. The scheme was considered a major reason for the BJP getting 163 seats in the 230-member state assembly in the 2023 assembly polls.
In the Ladli Behna scheme, the MP govt initially gave Rs 1,000 per month to women beneficiaries. On Aug 27, 2023, the earlier BJP govt announced that Ladli Bahana Yojana beneficiaries would get Rs 1,250 per month from Oct 2023.
It continues unchanged. The govt promised that from Rs 1,000, the financial assistance under the scheme would be increased to Rs 1,250, then Rs 1,500, then Rs 1,750, then Rs 2,000, and after that Rs 2,250, Rs 2,500, and Rs 2,750, respectively, until it reaches Rs 3,000 per month.
But so far, the money under the scheme has increased from Rs 1,000 per month to Rs 1,250 per month, and now an announcement has been made to increase it to Rs 1,500. There was reportedly no proposal in consideration to open new registration in the scheme.

Govt flayed for not fulfilling pre-poll promises
Vizianagaram: Allegingbetrayal of the unemployed youth, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has announced a massive protest titled 'Yuvatha Poru' on June 23, demanding the coalition government led by Chandrababu Naidu fulfill its pre-election promises. Addressing the media here on Friday, YSRCP district youth wing president Allu Avinash and student wing district president K Sai Kumar called upon unemployed youth and students to actively participate in the protest and make it a grand success. The protest will culminate into a dharna at the District Collector's office, where a memorandum will be submitted seeking immediate action on the unfulfilled assurances. As part of the preparations, the YSRCP leaders released wall posters and pamphlets highlighting the government's failure to deliver on key employment promises. The event was organised under the guidance of district party president Majji Srinivasa Rao. The YSRCP leaders alleged that the Naidu-led coalition cheated the unemployed with false promises made solely for electoral gains. Despite completing a year in power, the government has failed to provide the promised 20 lakh jobs to youth, disburse Rs 3,000 monthly unemployment allowance and release a job calendar in January. The government also failed to provide the assured Rs 10,000 to volunteers before elections, they pointed out. The YSRCP claimed that nearly 1.6 crore families across the State had been deceived by these unfulfilled promises. Majji Sirisahasra, Thota Vasu, Tarun, Shiva, Jagadeesh, Prudhvi and others have attended the programme.

Andhra: BJP's Bhanuprakash Reddy slams Jagan's governance, alleges YSRCP promoting violence and losing public trust
Nellore (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 21 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh BJP spokesperson Bhanuprakash Reddy on Friday launched a scathing attack against former Chief Minister and YSR Congress party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy over the 'Rapa Rapa' placard row. Referring to a recent incident during former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy's tour of Palnadu district, Bhanu Prakash Reddy stated that instead of condemning the violence, the YSR Congress chief supported it. 'One of his supporters displayed a placard saying that if Jagan comes to power in 2029, people would be beheaded like goats during the Gangamma Jathara. Instead of condemning such shocking behaviour, Jagan shamelessly supported it. This incident exposes his split personality and reveals his true intentions,' the BJP leader told the reporters. He added, 'The YSRCP should focus on cutting coconuts and preparing flour for parotas for the rest of their lives. The people have already given their verdict in the elections, and in the next elections, the YSRCP will likely be reduced to just one or zero seats. The public is clearly happier with the NDA coalition government than with your regime.' Attacking Jagan Mohan Reddy for governance under YSR Congress' rule, Bhanu Prakash Reddy said that his failures have caused irreparable damage to the state. He stated, 'Jagan Mohan Reddy's five-year rule has brought dark days to the state. People are deeply dissatisfied with his leadership. His political approach and leadership failures have caused irreparable damage to Andhra Pradesh.' Criticising the previous administration, he added, 'During the past five years under Jagan Reddy's rule, the state has become a hub of corruption, suffering, and lawlessness. People now view Jagan as a leader who has lost his place in their hearts. The promises made to the public have vanished into thin air, while corruption has thrived.' He alleged that the YSR Congress chief has lost public trust as Jagan Mohan Reddy promoted rowdyism. 'Jagan has completely lost public trust. His political strategies have been unjust to the people. The public is steadily distancing itself from his leadership, which has encouraged a culture of rowdyism. Fueled by his campaigns, this decline in law and order has destabilised the state,' Bhanuprakash told reporters. He alleged, 'Certain incidents in the past that disturbed peace and security were deliberately planned for political gain. These acts have triggered uncertainty and unrest among the public and have severely harmed the peaceful atmosphere of Andhra Pradesh.' Bhanu Prakash reaffirmed that the BJP, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, along with its alliance partners, is fully committed to restoring peace, order, and development in Andhra Pradesh. The row began when a placard bearing the provocative slogan 'Rapa Rapa Narukutham' (we'll chop heads one by one) was seen during Jagan Mohan Reddy's tour of Palnadu on Thursday. The slogan compared a possible YSRCP return to power in 2029 to a traditional ritual during the Gangamma Jatara, where symbolic beheadings take place. The incident gained traction and drew criticism, prompting the police to register a case against the individual and initiate an investigation. Responding to the issue during a press meeting on Friday, YS Jagan made a pointed remark. He questioned, 'Is it wrong to hold a placard with a dialogue from Allu Arjun's movie Pushpa?' He further added that, upon investigation, it was revealed that the person holding the placard actually belongs to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and holds active membership in it. Taking a jab at TDP leadership, Jagan remarked, 'Maybe he couldn't tolerate the wrongdoings of his own party's leader, Chandrababu, and that's why he was talking about chopping off heads of his own people.' Kolkata Police detain Union Minister Sukanta Majumder from meeting ‘dissident' British-Indian doctor
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State President and Union Minister, Sukanta Majumdar, was detained on Friday (June 20, 2025) in Kolkata's Bhawanipore while trying to meet an NRI doctor who had protested during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit to Kellogg College in the United Kingdom earlier this year. Chaos unfolded in Bhawanipore on Friday afternoon as Mr. Majumdar tried making his way through Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata's Bhawanipore to meet Dr. Rajat Subhra Banerjee at his residence. At first, Mr Majumdar's vehicle was stopped on his way. Then, from amidst a large crowd of BJP supporters and media personnel, he and Dr Rajat were detained and taken to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar in a police car. 'Dr. Rajat's house is located on 186C Harish Mukherjee Road, adjoining the residence of Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee. The doctor had asked the Chief Minister certain questions during her visit to Kellogg College. Since his return to Kolkata, some mafia-like doctors and people claiming to represent the West Bengal Medical Council have been harassing him,' the Union Minister said after his detainment. The BJP legislator said that the doctor had invited him to his house for tea, and accused the police of blocking his vehicle from approaching the doctor's house and jamming the road for hours. 'Today, when I went to visit Dr. Banerjee at his residence, I was blocked by the spineless, servile Kolkata Police — acting on Mamata Banerjee's direct orders. This isn't merely disgraceful — it is a blatant attack on personal liberty and the fundamental rights guaranteed in a democracy,' Mr. Majumder later wrote on X. Dr. Rajat was released from Lalbazar hours later. After leaving the Kolkata Police headquarters, he told mediapersons that he is a British passport holder and an Overseas Citizen of India, and he would take legal action against the police for 'physically assaulting him'. 'My house is behind Abhishek Banerjee's house. That is why we were not allowed to enter. I have lived in a foreign country for 25 years, and I have not experienced something like this. I felt sick and panic-stricken when they captured me and put me in a police vehicle like I was a petty thief. I simply wanted to meet a friend,' Dr. Rajat said after his release. He alleged that he is being 'targeted' for asking the Chief Minister questions during her visit to the University of Oxford. Reacting to the developments, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that Dr. Rajat could have waited till the end of the Chief Minister's address at Kellogg College and asked his questions later, 'instead of disrupting her speech'. 'We believe in a democracy. Otherwise, I would have demanded that he be thrown out of Bengal. Interrupting a Chief Minister during her speech cannot be called dissent; it is uncivil behaviour. The doctor misbehaved; he should be socially boycotted… his friendship with Sukanta Majumder proves that these so-called protestors are raam-baam dalal (BJP-Left brokers),' Mr. Ghosh said.
