Quoth the Golden State Valkyries: WNBA team's mascot is a raven named Violet

It's rare to witness an animal on the loose at a basketball game — but there are exceptions. During halftime Monday night, the Golden State Valkyries unleashed a feathery addition to their squad: Violet the Raven, the team's first mascot.
Violet danced through a tunnel, even opting for a cartwheel when she hit the court. Warriors center Quinten Post walked onto the court show Violet how to make a layup, but she just couldn't sink it.
The new arrival emerged from a large violet, gold-speckled egg — the kind wildlife expert Kenny Elvin deemed 'very unique.' The team told the Chronicle that the raven hatched Monday morning, but perhaps anticipating an energized arena crowd, waited until halftime to strut its feathers.
After the egg curiously appeared outside of Chase Center last Thursday, the Valkyries staff quickly moved it inside of the arena for 'safekeeping.' Before its relocation, a flock of inquisitive staff and onlookers approached the object, hoping to discover what might lay beneath its shell.
When Golden State unveiled videos of the egg on the team's Instagram, fans flew to post comments, speculating that what was inside must be the Valkyries' highly-anticipated mascot. Guesses ranged from dragons to swans, even Pegasuses (though, perhaps the latter too closely aligned with the Dallas Wings mascot). Some joked that fan-favorite Kaitlyn Chen or Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski would emerge from the egg.
But those who delved into Norse lore discovered that ravens are actually closely linked to the Valkyries. In Norse mythology, ravens and Valkyries share roles as symbols of battle and death — the Valkyries select which fallen warriors would ascend to Valhalla, while ravens circle battlefields and feed on the departed.
Ravens are also deeply tied to the Norse god Odin, who is sometimes called the 'Raven God.' Legend says that Odin harbors two raven companions, Huginn ('Thought') and Muninn ('Memory'). The two are fabled to fly across the world each day to gather news and report it back to Odin.
But in Norse mythology, there is no confirmed account of a raven emerging from a violet egg.
For Elvin, this was the first such egg he had encountered in his long-established career of falconry. The object sat atop a bed of violet feathers, a detail that urged Elvin to hypothesize that whatever rested inside must be some sort of violet bird.
And that it was.

Today's NYT Strands Puzzle: Hints, Spangram And Answers For Wednesday, August 13th

Well, we're smack dab in the middle of the week again. Wednesday — Odin's Day — the halfway point of our work week, splitting it in twain. It's just a short sprint to Friday now. Of course, come rain or shine, work or weekend, we have our puzzles to solve. Let's take a crack at today's Strands! Looking for yesterday's Strands? Find hints, clues and answers right here. Strands is the newest game in the New York Times' stable of puzzle games. It's a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we're given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day's theme. Spoilers ahead. Today's Strands Hints Read on for today's theme and some hints to help you uncover today's words. Today's Theme: Hitchcock festival FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Hint: As in Alfred Hitchcock Clue: North By Northwest, Rear Window etc. but only one word each Here are the first two letters of each word: Remember, spoilers ahead! What Are Today's Strands Answers? Today's spangram is: FILMTITLE Here's the full list of words: Here's the completed Strands grid: I found PSYCHO first, because it's one of Alfred Hitchcock's films I'm more familiar with and so searched for a P and then followed it to the S and Y and so forth. ROPE was right next to it, and then to the other side, VERTIGO. All great films, though I still laugh at how cheesy the epilogue of PSYCHO is. I found FILMTITLE next, today's oddly-positioned spangram. Then TOPAZ and LIFEBOAT at the top, though I don't think I've seen either of those films. At last, NOTORIOUS, which I've seen but it's been so long I couldn't tell you the plot. Only that it stars Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. What's your favorite Hitchcock movie? Mine is Rear Window. How did you do on your Strands today? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook. Very unlucky. Just one yellow 'E' and 329 remaining solutions. MOUND wasn't a very good follow-up, leaving me with a whopping 51. Thankfully, GRIEF slashed that to just two: FIERY and KEFIR. I felt like FIERY had already been a Wordle (though I'm not sure this is true) so I went with KEFIR. Lucky for me, that was the Wordle!Erik: 2 points Wordle Bot: 7 points The word kefir comes from Russian кефир (kefír), borrowed from Turkish kefir, which likely derives from the North Caucasian (possibly Ossetian) word kef meaning 'foam' or 'bubbles,' referring to the drink's effervescence. It entered English in the late 19th century via Russian descriptions of the fermented milk beverage.
