Bogus advert for govt farming job spreads in Indonesia
The image shows Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and actor Raffi Ahmad, President Prabowo Subianto's special envoy for young people. It also bears the official logo of the agriculture ministry on the upper left corner (archived here and here).
"The 2024 Millennial Farmer Programme initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia has been opened again!" reads part of the caption to the post which includes a link to an online portal.
The purported registration page asks users for their full name, location and Telegram number.
Similar posts began surfacing on Facebook and Instagram after local media reported in October 2024 that Amran said the government aimed to attract young people to farming jobs through a programme that could yield salaries higher than the average agriculture wages (archived link).
Many social media users appeared to believe the posts shared genuine registration pages for the programme.
"I'm ready sir, what should I prepare," one commented.
"I'm keen, where's the location, I hope this is real," wrote another.
But the agriculture ministry's spokesman Arief Cahyono told AFP on February 19 the posts are a "scam".
"We do not assign certain groups to coordinate [the registration]," he said.
Posts about the programme on the ministry's official Instagram and Facebook accounts on November 30 said those interested to apply can do so "through their local Agriculture Agency or the Agriculture Counseling Agency" (archived links here and here).
Arief added online link to the programme is "currently deactivated".
AFP has previously debunked scams misusing the names of prominent institutions in Indonesia to tout bogus cash handouts and raffle prizes.

Russia strikes Ukraine gas hub ahead of winter in ‘cynical' attack, Zelensky says
Russia struck a key gas pumping station in Ukraine, undermining the nation's preparation for winter in an attack that President Volodymyr Zelensky blasted as 'absolutely cynical.' The Orlovka gas interconnector, which pumps in LNG imported from the US and Azerbaijan, was struck during a Russian airstrike on the village of Novosilske, along the Romanian border, Zelensky confirmed Wednesday. 'This was a deliberate blow to our preparations for the heating season, absolutely cynical, like every Russian blow to the energy sector,' the Ukrainian president said on Telegram. Advertisement 3 Ukraine's gas pumping station in Orlovka was hit by a Russian airstrike overnight. AFP via Getty Images The attack on the gas line was also confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, according to the TASS state news outlet. Kyiv has faced a serious gas shortage since Russia began escalating its daily bombardments on Ukraine earlier this year, plummeting domestic production and forcing the besieged nation to rely more on imported LNG as winter approaches. Advertisement Ukraine's energy ministry said that the station that was hit on Wednesday was part of the gas route connecting Greek LNG terminals with domestic facilities facing shortages. The gas line had already been used to deliver LNG from the US to Ukraine, with successful tests also conducted to move Azerbaijani gas, bolstering plans for a large energy deal between the two nations. 3 Zelensky slammed the attack on one of Ukraine's key gas pumping stations, with the country contending with a shortage as winter approaches. Getty Images 'This is a Russian strike purely against civilian infrastructure, deliberately targeting the energy sector and, at the same time, relations with Azerbaijan, the United States and partners in Europe, as well as the normal lives of Ukrainians and all Europeans,' the energy ministry said in a statement. Advertisement The attack on the station also comes just days before Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is expected to meet with President Trump. Kyiv said 400,000 cubic meters of gas were scheduled to be pumped through Orlovka on Wednesday, but energy officials did not say if it will continue to use the interconnector that was hit. 3 Russia has continued to fire daily mass bombardments across the border, with no sign of a cease-fire. STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE OF UKRAINE HANDOUT/EPA/Shutterstock While Moscow has repeatedly denied targeting civilian infrastructure during the war, which is in its third year, the Kremlin has defended attacks on energy systems are legitimate targets to hinder Ukraine's military defenses. Advertisement The overnight attack on Orlovka also triggered Romania's military to scramble its F-16 jets, the latest NATO nation to respond as such in the face of Moscow's escalating attacks. 'On the night of August 5-6, the Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on the civilian infrastructure in the Ismail area, Ukraine, in the vicinity of the border with Romania,' Romania's defense ministry explained. Left-wing ‘Day of Rage' protests to target Israeli tourists in Greece
Greek left-wing groups and the BDS movement are planning a 'Day of Rage' this Sunday, calling for nationwide protests against Israel over its actions in Gaza. The demonstration, set for major tourist locations during peak travel season, aims to confront Israeli tourists directly and protest what organizers call 'war crimes and genocide.' Advertisement Recent weeks have seen a surge in anti-Israel protests across Greece, including incidents where Israeli tourists and ships were targeted. The Israeli ambassador's complaints about antisemitic graffiti in Athens were rebuffed by the city's mayor, who accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and defended the right to free expression. 3 A 'Day of Rage' is planned for this Sunday at tourist spots in Greece, calling for nationwide protests against Israel over its actions in Gaza. Last week, two coaches from Israel's national soccer team were attacked in Athens while speaking Hebrew. In July, an Israeli tourist was assaulted by a group of Syrian migrants at a beach near the Greek capital, with one of them reportedly biting off a piece of his ear. A kosher burger eatery in the city was vandalized last month in full view of staff and patrons.
