The advisory calls for identifying children aged between 6-14 years, especially those seen begging or who have dropped out before completing their elementary education
The Nagaland government has issued an advisory to identify underprivileged children, including those involved in begging, and enrol them in government schools.
The Directorate of School Education issued the advisory following recommendations from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which had earlier urged central and state governments to take concrete steps to protect and rehabilitate individuals involved in begging, including children.
According to officials, the advisory calls for identifying out-of-school children aged between 6 and 14 years, especially those seen begging or who have dropped out before completing their elementary education.
The advisory also includes children aged 3 to 6 years whose parents are engaged in begging and who are not enrolled in pre-schools, Anganwadi centres, or Balvatika programmes.
Principal Director of School Education, Shashank Pratap Singh, has urged NGOs, municipal councils, village and town councils, churches, student unions, and the general public to assist in this effort. He appealed to them to report details of such children to the Child Helpline 1098, which will help with their enrolment into the nearest government schools.
All District Education Officers (DEOs), Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs), and Senior SDEOs have been asked to work with District Child Protection Units and Child Welfare Committees to ensure the smooth admission of these children, in line with the Right to Education Act, 2009.
The NHRC has stressed that despite several government schemes aimed at poverty relief, the issue of begging, especially involving children, continues across the country.
According to the 2011 census, over 4.13 lakh people in India were recorded as beggars or vagrants, including children, women, the elderly, and transgender persons.

Danbury residents 43-year-old Trista L. Reilly and 42-year-old Christopher Drew Arnold were arrested after they exited the JetBlue flight which took off from New York and was headed to Sarasota, Florida, according to US-based news outlet WWSB. The mother of the children informed the flight attended that her children witnessed two other passengers engaging in sexual activity in their seats. Fixtures worth Rs 35 lakh missing from Kolkata 5-star hotel under renovation

Kolkata, Jul 23 (PTI) A theft, involving luxury fittings worth approximately Rs 35 lakh, was reported from a five-star hotel in Kolkata's Esplanade area, currently undergoing some renovation work since last year, police said on Wednesday. The New Market Police Station has launched a probe into the official complaint lodged by the authorities of the Oberoi Grand, a senior officer said. As per the complaint, 228 showerheads, eight ceiling fans, and several other fixtures, including taps and fittings, have gone missing from the washrooms and housekeeping pantry areas of the hotel, which has remained shut since August 2024 for extensive renovation work, he said. 'The incident came to light recently when a shift engineer noticed several high-value items were missing from the hotel's bathrooms and utility areas. Initial probe revealed that despite the contractor responsible for the renovation deploying around 20 security guards, such a large quantity of materials has gone missing. We are now probing whether individuals from the contracting or security agencies were complicit in this matter," the officer said. All angles are being examined, and statements are being recorded from those responsible for site security and maintenance, he said. PTI SCH NN Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. VHP urges Centre to bring strict anti-conversion law

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday urged the Centre to bring a 'strict" anti-conversion law for its implementation across the country. In a statement, VHP secretary general Surendra Jain said the arrest of some people in connection with cases of illegal religious conversion in Uttar Pradesh is a 'strong evidence" of how such unlawful activities are being carried out in different parts of the country. Such rackets are operating unabated even in those states where anti-conversion law is in place, he said. 'We appeal to the central government to immediately enact a strict law that is applicable across the country. It is not possible for one state government to check religious conversion. The vicious cycle of conversion is not only attacking the Hindu society but also posing a serious threat to national security," Jain said. Two days after an inter-state religious conversion racket was busted, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday arrested Abdul Rehman, an alleged kingpin in the case, from Delhi. According to police, Rehman, a resident of Firozabad, is the 11th accused arrested so far in the case. PTI PK PK KSS KSS Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
