Edinburgh Fringe venue under fire for censoring artist's work

Summerhall bosses confirmed to The National that they "chose to remove" words and symbols from the artist's work after staff "deeply offended and distressed".
Jane Frere, who lives in Drumnadrochit in the Highlands, was commissioned to create giant pastel murals for a main thoroughfare at Summerhall in the capital back in 2017.
Initially inspired by Carole Cadwalladr's investigative journalism piece for The Observer, The Great British Brexit Robbery, Frere focused one 'protest wall' on Brexit and the other on Donald Trump.

Frere, 65, made updates to the walls in 2019 after Boris Johnson became prime minister and Steve Bannon created The Movement to promote right-wing populist groups in Europe.
Following the return of Trump to office, Frere sought to update the Trump wall again back in May this year to reflect growing concern over the rise of the far-right, as she felt humanity was 'in its darkest hour'.
She included anti-Nazi slogans in the update to the wall including a smudged swastika inside a stop sign and messages such as 'Stoppt Nazis' and 'I bite Nazis'.

However, within 48 hours of her making the additions, they had been scrubbed out by Summerhall bosses, which Frere said happened without discussion.
Frere told The National she felt the venue has shown 'baffling disrespect' towards her as an artist.
Asked how she felt when the messages were removed, she said: "I felt a deep lack of respect for the work I have done over years in Summerhall, and a total lack of understanding.
'I did feel hurt. Nobody touches another artist's work, you just don't do that.
'If that happened to be behind glass, they wouldn't be able to deface it. If it was an oil painting, how would they have defaced that? You just don't touch another artist's work.
'I understand how provocative a swastika is, and I was willing to remove it completely after discussion. It was the lack of discussion that really got me and made me very angry.'
She went on: 'They keep on going on about it being an inclusive and safe place.
'By providing a safe place for artists as well as the public that means respect for the artists. They have shown baffling disrespect towards me as an artist."

Frere told The National concerns had been raised about the swastika image by Summerhall CEO Steve Gough when she was painting it, to which Frere offered to tone it down, though did not agree to remove it entirely.
Within 48 hours, Gough sent an email to Frere – which has been seen by The National – saying he had come in to several complaints from staff and the public adding that the swastika and other references to Nazis had been removed.
On the Trump wall there are other phrases such as 'love not hate', 'pussy bites back', 'keep Trump off our NHS' and 'fascism is not pretty'.
Frere said it aims to capture 'the mood, the rage, the anxiety of the mass protest demonstrations that are taking place on the streets around the world today' – most notably around Trump, Palestine and the climate emergency.
Asked about the message behind the stop sign with the swastika in it, Frere said: '[The message was] never again, and where the hell are we heading?
'Why do I feel so impassioned and so enraged and so personally terrified of where are at here in the first quarter of the 21st century?
'We are talking about the rise of neo-Nazism, at least those of us who are engaged politically. It comes up in so much media. It's also terrifying that with this second return of a new Trump era, the far-right groups now are coming out of the woodwork and my fear is that it won't be long before those swastikas will be seen on the streets of Germany and Austria and countries where it is a forbidden symbol.
'By putting it up there I'm flagging it up as a reminder of potentially where we are at and what's to come. The reason why I put up a symbol that's so provocative and so disturbing is to wake us up because the one thing that seems to be the enemy of us all is a kind of complacency – whether that's on the genocide in Gaza or the world that is on fire with our seeming indifference to catastrophic climate change.'
Gough responded on Summerhall's behalf, confirming that the work had been altered.
He said: "Whilst on site it came to our attention that symbolism, imagery and copy associated with hate crime had been included in her piece, in this very public space. It is not possible to apply content warning in this space and so we were presented with a situation where it was necessary to ask Jane to remove the sensitive content."
Gough said while Frere edited the work, it was not changed enough to satisfy the venue.
"The symbols were then left in situ over the weekend, during which time we received multiple complaints from both members of the public and staff who were deeply offended and distressed by the depictions of both a swastika and an SS boot with the term WEISS inscribed above it."
He continued: "Upon arrival on the Monday morning to find that Jane had not in fact diminished the symbolism, and when presented with these multiple, concerning, complaints, we chose to remove the symbols and inform Jane of our actions, at which point Jane was given multiple opportunities to submit proposals to complete the artwork omitting the use of imagery, symbolism or copy associated with hate crime. Repeatedly, Jane submitted proposals with the inclusion of such depictions.
"I must state that the use of symbolism, imagery and copy associated with hate crime in our public spaces, where no content warning may be applied is firmly against our polices and curatorial perspective. This has been repeatedly iterated to Jane."
Summerhall said Frere is not restricted from applying for future commissions with the venue.

AMSTERDAM, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A 28-year-old transgender woman from the U.S. began a legal challenge on Wednesday to the rejection of her asylum application in the Netherlands where she had sought political asylum saying she no longer felt safe in the United States. Veronica Clifford-Carlos, a visual artist from California, came to the Netherlands - the first country to legalise same-sex marriage and known for its strong protections of LGBT rights - because the Trump administration's policies towards transgender people made her feel unsafe, her lawyer's office said. The case, the first of its kind in the Netherlands, will be heard in a court in Amsterdam starting Wednesday, with a ruling expected in four to six weeks. Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has issued executive orders limiting transgender rights, banned transgender people from serving in the armed forces, and rescinded anti-discrimination policies for LGBTQ+ people. Dutch advocacy group LGBT Asylum Support, which backs the lawsuit, is currently assisting around 20 U.S. trans individuals with pending asylum claims. According to data from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), 29 Americans applied for asylum in the Netherlands during the first half of this year. In previous years there were between nine and 18 applicants per year, an IND spokesperson said. "The IND generally states that discrimination by authorities and fellow citizens can be considered an act of persecution if it is so severe that victims can no longer function socially and societally," LGBT Asylum Support said in a statement. "But the IND maintains that there are no grounds for exceptional treatment of transgender and queer refugees from the U.S."

Texas Democrats tear ‘permission slips' imposed by Republican house speaker

Texas Democrats are tearing up 'permission slips' they signed in order to leave the chamber, joining state representative Nicole Collier ahead of Wednesday's vote on the controversial Texas congressional redistricting maps. The slips are part of new surveillance protocols set by Texas Republicans in the house chamber, stating that Democrats would 'be granted written permission to leave only after agreeing to be released into the custody of a designated [Texas department of public safety] officer' who would ensure their return to the chamber. The move follows a two-week quorum break that had delayed Republicans' effort to redraw the state's congressional districts to align with Donald Trump's push to reshape the US House map in his favor before the 2026 midterm elections. On Tuesday, Collier chose to remain confined inside the Texas house chamber until lawmakers reconvene on Wednesday, refusing to comply with what she condemned as a 'demeaning' protocol. Collier was among dozens of Democrats who left the state for the Democratic havens of California, Illinois, Massachusetts and New York to delay the Republican-controlled legislature's approval of redrawn congressional districts sought by Trump. When they returned Monday, Republicans insisted that Democrats have around-the-clock police escorts to ensure they wouldn't leave again and scuttle Wednesday's planned House vote on a new political map. But Collier wouldn't sign what Democrats called the 'permission slip' needed to leave the house chamber, a half-page form allowing Department of Public Safety troopers to follow them. She spent Monday night and Tuesday on the house floor, where she set up a livestream while her Democratic colleagues outside had plainclothes officers following them to their offices and homes. Linda Garcia, a Dallas-area representative, said she drove three hours home from Austin with an officer following her. When she went grocery shopping, he went down every aisle with her, pretending to shop, she said. As she spoke to the Associated Press by phone, two unmarked cars with officers inside were parked outside her home. 'It's a weird feeling,' she said. 'The only way to explain the entire process is: it's like I'm in a movie.' The trooper assignments, ordered by Dustin Burrows, the Republican house speaker, was another escalation of a redistricting battle that has widened across the country. Trump is pushing GOP state officials to tilt the map for the 2026 midterms more in his favor to preserve the GOP's slim house majority, and Democrats nationally have rallied around efforts to retaliate. Gene Wu, the house minority leader from Houston, and Vincel Perez, a state representative of El Paso, stayed overnight with Collier, who represents a minority-majority district in Fort Worth. On Tuesday, more Democrats returned to the Capitol to tear up the slips they had signed and stay on the house floor, which has a lounge and restrooms for members. Cassandra Garcia Hernandez, a Dallas-area representative, called their protest a 'slumber party for democracy' and said Democrats were holding strategy sessions on the floor. 'We are not criminals,' Penny Morales Shaw, a Houston representative, said. Collier said having officers shadow her was an attack on her dignity and an attempt to control her movements. Burrows brushed off Collier's protest, saying he was focused on important issues, such as providing property tax relief and responding to last month's deadly floods. His statement Tuesday morning did not mention redistricting and his office did not immediately respond to other Democrats joining Collier. 'Rep Collier's choice to stay and not sign the permission slip is well within her rights under the house rules,' Burrows said. Under those rules, until Wednesday's scheduled vote, the chamber's doors are locked, and no member can leave 'without the written permission of the speaker'. To do business Wednesday, 100 of 150 House members must be present. The GOP plan is designed to send five additional Republicans from Texas to the US House. Texas Democrats returned to Austin after Democrats in California launched an effort to redraw their state's districts to take five seats from Republicans. Democrats also said they were returning because they expect to challenge the new maps in court. Republicans issued civil arrest warrants to bring the Democrats back after they left the state 3 August, and Greg Abbott, the Republican governor, asked the state supreme court to oust Wu and several other Democrats from office. The lawmakers also face a fine of $500 for every day they were absent. Democrats reported different levels of monitoring. Armando Walle, a Houston representative, said he wasn't sure where his police escort was, but there was still a heightened police presence in the Capitol, so he felt he was being monitored closely. Some Democrats said the officers watching them were friendly. But Sheryl Cole, an Austin representative, said in a social media post that when she went on her morning walk Tuesday, the officer following her lost her on the trail, got angry and threatened to arrest her. Garcia said her nine-year-old son was with her as she drove home and each time she looked in the rearview mirror, she could see the officer close behind. He came inside a grocery store where she was shopping with her son. 'I would imagine that this is the way it feels when you're potentially shoplifting and someone is assessing whether you're going to steal,' she said. Associated Press contributed to this report

Home Office lawyers had warned that such a ruling 'could put Britain's asylum hotel scheme at risk of falling apart' as ministers grapple to shut down venues. ‌ Dozens of local authorities are now exploring similar challenges, with the Government now drawing up contingency plans. Labour has vowed to end the use of hotels by the end of this Parliament after the Tories resorted to using them when the asylum system descended into chaos. Experts said a "failure of public policy", with years of not processing asylum claims by the Conservatives, led to people being put in expensive accommodation. ‌ In 2023, when the asylum backlog was a mammoth 175,000, more than 400 hotels were in use, housing over 56,000 people. At the time Robert Jenrick, who was immigration minister, bragged at the speed he was securing rooms. He said, in a quote dug up by Labour this week: "More hotels have been coming online almost every month throughout the whole of this year. So Suella Braverman and her predecessor Priti Patel were securing more hotels. What I have done in my short tenure is wrap that up and secure even more." The brazen Shadow Justice Secretary has been vocal on the issue of asylum hotels in recent weeks, joining demonstrations outside the Bell Hotel to protest about problems his party caused. The backlog swelled after the UK lost its legal right to return migrants to Europe after Brexit, while a string of botched laws under the Tories failed to drive down small boat crossings. The Conservatives pinned their hopes on being able to send people to Rwanda as the number of people in the asylum system grew and grew. Labour has pledged to get a grip of the chaos, but says it will take time to see the results. At the end of March this year there were 32,345 people living in asylum hotels, Home Office figures show. This was up from 29,585 when Labour came to power. It means 31% of asylum seekers were receiving asylum support earlier this year. ‌ Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the Government accepts that hotels are not the most appropriate place for asylum seekers to be housed. And in the immediate aftermath of the Epping judgment, border security minister Dame Angela Eagle said Labour had "inherited a broken asylum system". Dame Angela said the Government would "continue working with local authorities and communities to address legitimate concerns" around asylum hotels. Imran Hussain, from the Refugee Council, told Sky News: "Nobody thinks asylum seekers should be kept in hotels while their case is being assessed. "It's very expensive. It's not good for the asylum seekers. It's isolating. It's an isolating experince I think even before the protests, with the protests it's incredibly terrifying for people. ‌ "And of course as we've seen for local communities, there's a lot of tension, some of which is being exploited by people on the far- right. So no one thinks it's a good idea." And explaining how hotels came to be used, Mr Hussain continued: " This isn't a planning issue, really. This is a failure of public policy. For 20 odd years that we've supported asylum seekers through, the system worked perfectly well. "We had accommodation for people without using hotels. But the last few years there's been a huge backlog of cases that's grown up because the previous government (the Tories) stopped making decisions on cases because it wanted to send people to Rwanda. "The backlog has meant the accommodation that was existing was full and people have had to use hotels."
