Why Russell Martin has really left Rangers fans 'underwhelmed' as Celtic daft Alan Brazil has no doubt over one thing

Daily Record2 days ago

The big news from Scotland reached the talkSPORT airwaves this morning and once again Steven Gerrard's name cropped up
Russell Martin is officially the new manager of Rangers after the long search came to a conclusion on Thursday – but Alan Brazil gets why some fans are 'underwhelmed' by the appointment.
The Ibrox bosses went through a rigorous process with a number of big names including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti mentioned to be Philippe Clement's successor, but in the end it was former defender and Southampton boss Martin who won the race.

He was unveiled in his new role yesterday and will need to get cracking with Champions League qualifiers in around seven weeks time and the big pre-season return on June 23.

The appointment has gathered mixed reviews and Brazil reckons he knows why 'one or two are underwhelmed'.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "I think why one or two people are underwhelmed is because Steven Gerrard's name was branded about. One or two other big names as well.
"Listen, Russell is a good coach, no doubt about it. People, I don't know what they want.
"The guy has managed in the Premiership, he took them down but they played good football at times but as Ally McCoist said, it is a different game in Scotland and you need players that can play out from the back and he's not sure that Rangers have got them."
He added: "He's not daft. He will know Celtic have the superior side and squad at the moment.
"He will be rubbing his hands taking on Brendan [Rodgers] don't worry about that. He knows how big Rangers are as a football club."

Co-host Ray Parlour offered his view adding: "All I will say is, if you look to Steven Gerrard as manager. I don't know the reasons why, he was mentioned quite often.
"People would probably want to play for Steven Gerrard because his name and all that sort of stuff. There is a project here under Steven Gerrard and I want to be part of that.

"I am not knocking him here, and you've got to give him a chance and everybody deserves a chance and he might prove everybody wrong and win the league, who knows?
"But people might look at Russell Martin and say 'do I really want to play for a person like that?'
"I want to play for Steven Gerrard and his make up if it was Steven Davis and Jordan Henderson was involved, people like that.

"It's quite exciting for any player to go and be part of that."

The Scotland international has been in talks with the Scottish champions over a new deal but no agreement has been reached. Brendan Rodgers has made it abundantly clear that he wants to hold onto Taylor beyond this season but he looks set to quit the Hoops in the coming weeks. We told you in December how Dinamo Zagreb were the first club to be linked with the out-of-contract ace, with PAOK recently joining them in the transfer race. However, the Greek side jumped to the front of the queue when they tabled a lucrative offer to the player this month. Reports out of Greece claim the contract includes a two-year deal with an option to extend it by a further 12 months, along with a salary that's "significantly" higher than what he earns in Glasgow. PAOK technical director Christos Karipidis has confirmed the club are waiting on a response from Taylor. And Greek outlet Sport Dog claim he's been given a deadline of the end of June to make his decision. Manager Razvan Lucescu wants his new players in the door before the start of their first pre-season training camp, which is set for the end of the month. Taylor isn't the only player the Thessaloniki outfit are holding out for. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Another former Celtic full-back is also on their radar. The report states that ex-Hoops loanee Jonjoe Kenny has also been approached with an offer. Kenny, who had a short loan stint at Parkhead in 2021, is currently a free agent after leaving Hertha Berlin last month. Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in escalating Ballon d'Or row

Franck Ribery has previously expressed his displeasure at missing out on the Ballon d'Or in 2013 to five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and has once again hit out at the Portuguese forward Franck Ribery has mocked Cristiano Ronaldo 's claim about the Ballon d'Or after he revealed his three favourites. The latest iteration of the award is set to be handed out in a glitzy ceremony in Paris in September. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after helping the French side to the Champions League for the first time. Lamine Yamal and Mohamed Salah have also been mentioned as contenders for the award. ‌ Meanwhile, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has offered his take on this year's frontrunners and claimed that Dembele could be the favourite after his European success. He said: 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. ‌ 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' Ribery has since replied with a scathing comment on social media. 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?,' Ribery asked on Twitter alongside three laughing emojis. It is not the first time that Ribery has expressed his annoyance at missing out on the Ballon d'Or. The Frenchman was among the front-runners for the award back in 2013 after helping Bayern Munich to the Champions League crown. But he ended up finishing third behind Messi and Ronaldo - the latter claiming the crown with 27.99% of the votes. And that is a call that still wrangles with Ribery to his day. ‌ Who should win this year's Ballon d'Or? Share your thoughts in the comments below 'It was unfair," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year. "It was an incredible season for me, and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice." Ronaldo has since added a further three Ballon d'Ors to his collection, his last coming in 2017 when he was still with Real Madrid. His former teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have won the award since, with Messi also scooping a further two. Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the current holder after becoming the first Premier League player since Ronaldo in 2008 to win the award. Flynn Downes 'wanted' by Rangers boss Russell Martin as mega Southampton price tag tests 49ers transfer resolve

The playmaker was a key player under Martin at St Mary's having previously played for him at Swansea Southampton playmaker Flynn Downes is reportedly a target for Rangers this summer. New boss Russell Martin is said to be keen on a reunion with the 26-year-old in the Scottish Premiership - having previously managed the 26-year-old at Swansea and the Saints. ‌ Downes was a key member of the Southampton team that secured promotion through the play-offs in the 2023/34 campaign while on loan from West Ham. ‌ He would return to to the south coast ahead of their return to the Premier League for a £15million fee. The Sun report that the newly relegated St Mary's side would demand at least £10million to sell Downes - and could price out Rangers. But with the American revolution in full flow at Ibrox, CEO Patrick Stewart has promised Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected in the Premiership giants by their new owners.. It could be a big call by sporting director Kevin Thelwell, with the report also noting Nottingham Forest left-back Harry Toffolo is a target as he prepares to leave the club as a free agent. The report comes after Record Sport revealed Conor Coady and Dor Turgerman on the shortlist of targets this summer. Negotiations have started with Leicester City over a potential deal to bring in experience Coady - while rising talent Turgerman has opened the door to a move by admitting he is ready to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season.
