Dodgers Among Favorites to Land Munetaka Murakami, Per Insider
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Munetaka Murakimi is likely going to be one of the biggest headliners in free agency just like Shohei Ohtani was several years ago. With that in mind, it's not too soon to look at possible landing spots for him. MLB insider Jon Heyman lists the Los Angeles Dodgers as a strong possibility. Potential fits for Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami, per @JonHeyman: Mariners, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox 🍿 — B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) August 13, 2025 "No. 2 team I've got is the Dodgers," Heyman said on BR Walkoff. "They're a $400 million payroll team. They're willing to do anything, right? I think Muncy's still got some play left in him, but, you know, they're willing to move things around. They do great with Japanese players. Obviously, they've got superstars already. ... Dodgers, a potential fit, although Muncy's still got a year to go. but they're not going to worry about that $10 or $14 million, whatever he's making, if they can get Murakami." LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 19: The Los Angeles Dodgers logo is seen on the top deck elevator before a game against the San Diego Padres4 at Dodger Stadium on June 19, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. MoreMurakimi would make sense for the Dodgers with Muncy aging, and the Dodgers aren't going to worry about the money. Los Angeles does have an advantage over the other teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets with having Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Having a strong Japanese presence would help Murakimi feel more at home right away with the Dodgers. Entering Wednesday, Murakimi held a slash line of .311/.391/.611 with the Yakult Swallows this season. Primarily a third baseman, he would provide another a strong bat in the Dodgers' lineup along with Ohtani and Freddie Freeman. Other teams will have chance to sign him, but don't be surprised if Murakimi signs with the Dodgers. More MLB: Blue Jays Trade Deadline Additions Will Lead to 'Uncomfortable Conversations'

Sauce Gardner dealing with sore calf, status for Jets' preseason game against Giants up in the air
New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner sat out the team's joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday because of a sore calf. Gardner participated in practice Tuesday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park but wasn't spotted during the teams' session at the Giants' facility Wednesday. "Sauce wasn't out (there) today," coach Aaron Glenn said after practice. "He had some calf soreness. We'll continue to evaluate him and see exactly where he's at." Gardner has been one of the Jets' best players since being drafted fourth overall out of Cincinnati in 2022. He was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was an All-Pro selection in his first two NFL seasons. The 24-year-old Gardner had a slightly off season, by his standards, last year but is still considered one of the league's elite cornerbacks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, making him the NFL's highest-paid player at his position. He also is the focal point of a new-look secondary for the Jets, who have Gardner and free-agent signing Brandon Stephens at cornerback, with Michael Carter as the nickelback and free-agent signing Andre Cisco and Tony Adams at safety. The Jets don't have another full practice before their preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night. Glenn declined to say whether he would play his starters in that game -- "The plan is the plan," is all he would divulge -- so it's unclear if Gardner would participate even if healthy. Typically, teams play their starters for a quarter or a half in the second game, using it as a warmup for the regular season while backups typically play the final preseason game. Rookie quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, was back on the field after leaving practice Tuesday with an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot. He didn't participate in team drills. "Held him out, but I anticipate him playing this week," Glenn said. "So that's good." Cook is one of just three healthy quarterbacks on the Jets' roster, with starter Justin Fields and Adrian Martinez. Glenn announced Tuesday that veteran backup Tyrod Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery and wouldn't play the rest of the preseason.
