Scottish service station on M74 crowned the best in country
Scotland's best motorway service station is Cairn Lodge on the M74 near Douglas, praised for its cleanliness, layout, and local farm shop
As millions of motorists prepare for a busy bank holiday getaway, a new ranking has revealed where drivers are best off stopping for a bite or a breather, and the results might surprise you.
Consumer group Which? has released its first motorway service station league table in four years, naming the best and worst stops across the UK. Based on feedback from more than 4,000 members covering nearly 9,000 individual visits, stations were rated on everything from food prices to cleanliness and accessibility.
Scotland's top performer was Cairn Lodge on the M74 near Douglas in South Lanarkshire, which came fourth overall in the UK with an impressive score of 72 percent, Scottish Daily Express reports.
Owned by the Westmorland Family, the same independent company behind the widely loved Tebay and Gloucester services, Cairn Lodge drew praise for its spotless facilities, convenient layout and a farm shop packed with local produce.
Though it lost some marks on price and outside space, the station scored four out of five in five key areas: shops, food and drink, facilities, cleanliness, and convenience and accessibility. Visitors described it as 'spotless' and 'exceptional,' echoing the kind of loyalty that has made Tebay a motorway icon.
Cairn Lodge's high placement helped secure the M74 and A74(M) corridor as the best stretch for service stations in Scotland. Just 35 miles south, Annandale Water on the A74(M) in Dumfries and Galloway ranked second in Scotland and eighth in the UK with a 56 percent score. Operated by Roadchef, this stop is popular for its scenic location by a loch.
In third place north of the border was Gretna services, also on the A74(M), with a respectable 53 percent score. Operated by Welcome Break, it tied for 13th place overall in the UK.
At the other end of the table, Kinross services on the M90 in Perth and Kinross ranked bottom in Scotland, scoring just 36 per cent. Moto-operated Stirling and Hamilton stops also fared poorly, with 40 and 38 percent respectively.
Across the UK, Gloucester Services on the M5, another Westmorland-run stop, claimed the top spot with an impressive 85 percent. Tebay on the M6 in Cumbria came second, while Rugby's Moto Services on the M6 in Warwickshire rounded out the top three.
Bridgwater Services on the M5, run by Moto, landed at the bottom of the UK-wide rankings with a dismal 23 percent.
Which? Travel Editor Rory Boland said: 'The best service stations are a convenient pit stop with decent food and facilities, however our survey shows those are few and far between and that many services are not up to scratch.
'Poor facilities and extortionate prices for food and drink were widespread complaints, but most shocking of all was how drivers told us just how many services were unclean. To avoid disappointment, people should plan their route to avoid the worst service stations and look for alternative places to stop.'

Moto chief executive Ken McMeikan responded by pointing to improvements made since the survey.
'During the past two years, we have invested over £50 million in refurbishing our service stations and building a new motorway service area on the A1M at Sawtry,' he said. 'This substantial investment demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the experience for all our customers.
'We value customer feedback and are resolutely committed to addressing any concerns. The most recent independent Transport Focus study, conducted in the summer of 2023, surveyed a significantly larger group than the Which? panel. Moto achieved an average customer satisfaction score of 94 per cent across our Motorway Service Areas.'
He added: 'Our commitment to continuous improvement is evident in our extensive refurbishment programme, particularly targeting older Motorway Service Areas. We've also invested heavily to refurbish 75 percent of our toilet blocks in the last five years.'

The 30 best restaurants in London
The London restaurant scene is one of the world's best, and it runs the gamut from great British institutions that have been around for decades to trendy no-reservations spots that open faster than you can keep track of. It should come as little surprise that innovative and impressive chefs from all over the world are keen for a place at the (dinner) table here. Pull up a stool at a long steel counter to watch as Northern Thai dishes are cooked over open flames, sink into your leather booth and press the button for champagne to enjoy with lobster mac 'n' cheese, or order a whole spread of small plates inspired by Italy's diverse regions. If you're serious about food, you'll find London has plenty to offer. For further London inspiration, see our guides to the city's best hotels, pubs and bars, shopping and things to do. Find a restaurant by type: Best all-rounders Best for families Best for cheap eats Best for walk ins Best for fine dining Best for views Best for sharing plates Best all-rounders The Devonshire Come and worship at the recently revamped Soho pub that's said to do the best pint of Guinness outside of Dublin (something to do with the nitrogen ratio, apparently). Charismatic pub landlord Oisin Rogers, formerly of the much-loved Guinea Grill, has been plotting his vision for this freehouse and grill restaurant for ten years. Together with Flat Iron's Charlie Carroll they've created what they call your classic London pub – warm, welcoming, open to all. All wood panelled and cosy lighting, you go for one and feel inclined to stay for four (or more). The bar food comes homemade making use of the in-house butcher and bakery. Upstairs is the very hot table (in more ways than one) restaurant where Scottish beef, dry aged and butchered on site, is cooked on the ember grill, along with langoustines from Oban, lobster and hand-dived scallops. Is it pub or a restaurant? It's both, and they're both exceptional.

Travel expert reveals how to bag the cheapest flights between the UK and Sydney - from as little as £300
A travel expert has revealed how holidaymakers can snap up a trip from Sydney to the UK for as little as £300. Posting on Instagram @ explains that he found two possible options to get a bargain flight from Sydney back to the UK. The travel expert reveals that one of the options includes two stopovers along the way, while the other has just one. He says: 'Option one is going to be using Fly Scoot. Now these guys have an incredible route between Singapore and Athens in Greece. 'They also fly between Singapore and Sydney.' Fly Scoot is a low-cost Singaporean airline and a subsidiary of the country's Singapore Airlines. The travel expert demonstrates how tourists can search for flights from Sydney to Athens on the airline's website. He explains: 'You'll be able to see a number of fares at around the £260 mark.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Max Angel (@ The travel pro highlights one option that includes a six hour transit in Singapore but admits that some travellers have 'complaints about the comfort of Scoot'. However, he claims that at that £260 'price point, you can't really complain' explaining that it's around 20 hours of flying for less than £300. After looking at the trip from from Singapore to Athens, the travel pro then searches for a one-way flight from Athens to London and finds a trip with Wizz Air in June for just £29, making the price for the entire journey around £300. The flight option comes with 10kg of cabin luggage. The travel expert then explains that the second bargain route will be a better choice for tourists who want to check bags. Option two requires travellers to either fly with Air China or Hainan Airlines. He reveals that both Chinese airlines include a stopover in China on the route. The expert explains: 'I would definitely pick Air China, stopping in Beijing between the 5th and 10th of June. You should be able to pick these up for around £330. 'I'd probably prioritise these flights as they come with two checked bags included, it's also only one stop and on that stop over you can explore Beijing. So I guess it all depends on your tolerance of the Chinese airlines. 'For me, although £330 isn't the cheapest, booking flights one-way instead of a return is always gonna be more expensive to cover that distance of flights, I think this is still a good deal.' It comes after Liz Stanway, a travel advisor for Sykes Holiday Cottages, exclusively revealed some of the oddest questions she's been asked by customers throughout her career. One of the strangest, she told us, is: 'Do I need to bring my own toilet roll, or is that included?' She added: 'This one comes up a lot as people often worry that when they reach their holiday home, they might be caught short. 'We also get a surprising number of questions about gravy boats at Christmas.'
