More people in Japan planning to travel abroad during summer
JTB based its forecast on a survey, flight reservations and other data.
It says some 2.44 million people will go abroad for at least one night between July 15 and August 31. That's up 20.8 percent from last summer.
The agency says the yen's depreciation has somewhat slowed and summer bonuses are on an upward trend, helping to encourage more overseas travel.
South Korea and Europe are the most popular destinations, followed by Taiwan and Southeast Asia. The US mainland is also gaining popularity.
Compared to domestic travel, overseas travel had been slow to recover after the pandemic. But, the agency says, if its projections come true, international trips are expected to recover to about 90 percent of the pre-pandemic 10-year average.
JTB also forecasts that 72.2 million people will go on domestic trips this summer, up 0.3 percent from last year.
The agency says overseas travel demand has clearly recovered. It adds that travel styles are diversifying and that destinations are spreading, not only to Asia but also Europe and the United States, as more people are willing to spend time and money to travel further.

Ishiba, EU Leaders to Agree on Intl Economic Order; Draft Statement Shows Support For Rules-Based Free Trade

The joint statement, while avoiding naming these countries, stated that Japan and the EU 'continue to contribute to maintaining and strengthening a stable and predictable rules-based free and fair economic order.' Japan will steadily advance tariff negotiations with the United States, hoping to reach an agreement by the Aug. 1 deadline, while clarifying its stance on multilateral cooperation with the EU toward the stabilization of the long-term international economic order. Trade and economic security are a main focus of Japan-EU cooperation. They will agree to work together to maintain the World Trade Organization-centered free trade system and lead discussions in multilateral forums such as WTO and Group of Seven summit meetings. They will cooperate in monitoring the supply chains of strategic materials and strengthening and diversifying the supply chains of critical materials such as rare earths and batteries. To enhance energy security, Japan and the EU will also support investment to stabilize energy supplies including liquefied natural gas. Japan and the EU will invite industrial entities from both sides to launch a dialogue on defense industry collaboration between Japan and the EU, including in connection with advanced and dual-use technologies. They will also accelerate the development of satellite constellations that link multiple small satellites. The two sides have deepened their cooperative relationship through the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, which came into effect in 2019, and the Strategic Partnership Agreement, which officially came into effect in January. These agreements serve as a basis for the upcoming Competitiveness Alliance to further strengthen their strategic competitiveness in face of the current state of the global economy.

Nissan to cease auto production at mainstay plant in Japan
Japanese automobile manufacture Nissan Motor has announced that it will cease vehicle production at its mainstay Oppama plant near Tokyo as part of its restructuring efforts. The struggling Japanese automaker said on Tuesday that production at Oppama in Kanagawa Prefecture will be halted at the end of March 2028. Nissan also said it would transfer production to facilities run by the company's unit in Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan. It said the research center, the crash test site and other facilities on the plant's compound will be retained and will continue to operate as before. The carmaker said it will consider a wide range of options on how to utilize the plant in the future. To achieve its restructuring target, Nissan earlier announced that it will cut its group-wide payroll by 20,000 workers and reduce the number of factories by seven in and outside Japan. Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa told reporters: "It was a difficult decision for both myself and the company. However, we believe it is necessary for Nissan to overcome its current challenging situation and return to our growth trajectory." The Oppama plant, which began operation in 1961, rolled out many of Nissan's signature models, such as the Bluebird and the March. However, in the face of slumping business in recent years, the plant's low operation rate was posing a major challenge. The plant currently employs around 2,400 people. Nissan said it will retain the workforce until the end of March 2028 and notify workers as soon as the company comes up with specific future plans. Nissan said vehicle production will also be terminated at a Nissan subsidiary's Shonan plant near Tokyo. Espinosa said, "There will be no other reduction or consolidation of vehicle production sites in Japan." He added Nissan will announce any decision on the closure of overseas production bases at the appropriate time.

Ishiba Likely to Meet with Bessent in Tokyo This Week; U.S. Treasury Secretary to Attend Expo Event
Arrangements are being made for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is scheduled to visit Japan to attend an event at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo in Osaka on Saturday, it has been learned. Bessent is the chief negotiator for the Japan-U.S. talks on tariffs imposed by the United States on Japanese products. According to Japanese government sources, Ishiba hopes to make progress in the negotiations as the Aug. 1 deadline nears. A meeting is being planned to take place in Tokyo on Friday, the sources said. Ryosei Akazawa, minister in charge of economic revitalization and Japan's chief negotiator, is also expected to meet with Bessent. Bessent will participate in an event for the U.S. national day at the Expo as the head of the U.S. delegation.
