Son Heung-min to leave Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur's captain Son Heung-min during the team practice earlier this year. PHOTO: REUTERS Tottenham captain Son Heung-min said on Saturday that he will leave the club this summer after a decade in north London. The 33-year-old attacker joined the Premier League side from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to play more than 450 times for Spurs. In May he lifted the Europa League trophy but he had a poor season overall by his high standards and struggled with a series of leg injuries. "Before we start the press conference I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer," the South Korean told reporters in Seoul, where Tottenham are on a pre-season tour. "Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision." Son, who has scored 173 goals for Spurs, did not say where he intends to go next and cut an emotional figure. He has been linked with a move to the MLS in the United States. "It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision," Son said, flanked by new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank. "I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change — 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. "I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man." Speaking in Korean, Son said that winning a European trophy — Tottenham's first European crown in 41 years — played "a big part" in his thinking. "Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could," he said. "I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again." Frank, who joined Spurs from Brentford in June, paid tribute to the South Korean skipper. "For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player," said the Dane, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou. "He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League." Spurs will face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, and Son is guaranteed a rapturous reception in front of his home fans. Spurs have had a fairly quiet summer in the transfer market so far, with attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus from West Ham their only major acquisition. Morgan Gibbs-White had looked set to follow from Nottingham Forest but a £60 million move broke down.

Liverpool's 2025-26 kits celebrate tradition with new touches

Liverpool FC has unveiled its new home and away kits for the 2025-26 season, kicking off their 10-year partnership with Adidas in style. The new jerseys were officially revealed on Friday at Anfield, with both designs now set to lead the club into their title defence. The German sportswear giant becomes Liverpool's kit supplier for the third time in the club's history. The partnership began in 1985 and lasted until 1996, during which the Reds won three First Division titles. The two brands reunited again from 2006 to 2012, securing both the FA Cup and League Cup during that spell. The home kit, marking the start of this latest era, opts for a classic look. The geometric patterns and yellow accents from last season's design have been replaced by a bold, straightforward red shirt with simple white trim. The design is reminiscent of the popular Adidas home shirt from 2006 to 2008, with the white piping that outlines the torso giving it a vintage feel. Liverpool's away kit, while somewhat understated, continues to reflect the club's rich history. The white jersey features simple red and black detailing, but it's the subtler touches that stand out. The iconic Liver Bird crest has been reimagined to resemble the roof arch of the Main Stand at Anfield, which stood proudly at the heart of the stadium in the early 1900s. The 2025-26 kits also carry meaningful tributes. Both shirts feature the "97" Hillsborough flame emblem, honouring the lives lost in 1989. In addition, fans will be able to add a tribute to Diogo Jota, with a special decal of his No. 20 shirt number available for replica shirts. All proceeds from this gesture will support the LFC Foundation, which is planning to create a grassroots football project in Jota's name. The new strips will make their on-pitch debut in August, with the home kit set to be worn in Liverpool's upcoming friendlies against Athletic Club at Anfield. The away kit will make its first appearance during the Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley the following week. With these new designs, Liverpool is gearing up for another strong season, both on and off the pitch, as they aim to defend their Premier League title and make a statement with their refreshed look.

Authorities abandon recovery of German Olympian killed

SKARDU: Authorities have abandoned efforts to recover the body of German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan this week. Dahlmeier was confirmed dead on Wednesday, having been hit by falling rocks while climbing at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said Thursday. Olympic biathlon champion confirmed dead In consultation with the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the agency said her relatives would "continue to monitor the situation... and are keeping the option of arranging a rescue at a later date". Several of Dahlmeier's colleages confirmed the two-time Olympic gold medallist had said she did not want her body recovered if it put any would-be rescuers at risk. German mountaineer Thomas Huber was part of a team who had attempted a rescue but told reporters on Thursday: "We have decided she should stay, because that was her wish." Another member of the rescue team, American Jackson Marvell told AFP it would be "disrespectful" to recover her body contrary to her wishes. Marvell said "the recovery of Laura's body will be possible, but it involves incredible risks, both on foot and by helicopter". Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Krauss, who was with her at the time of the incident, said at a press conference on Thursday the former Olympian did not move after being caught in a rockfall. "I saw Laura being hit by a huge rock and then being thrown against the wall. And from that moment on, she didn't move again," Krauss told reporters. Krauss said she was unable to reach Dahlmeier and called for outside support. "It was impossible for me to get there safely. "It was clear to me the only way to help her was to call a helicopter. She didn't move, she didn't show any signs (of movement). I called out to her, but there was no response." "She only had a chance if help arrived immediately," she said. Dahlmeier won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25.
