Republicans propose naming the Kennedy Center's opera house after Melania Trump
House Republicans tucked the provision by Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, into the bill that would fund the Department of the Interior, the EPA and other related agencies for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins in October. It was adopted as part of an amendment by the House Appropriations Committee in a 33-25 vote and the legislation was reported out of committee in a 33-28 vote. It would next head to the full House for a vote.
'First Lady Melania Trump serves as the Honorary Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center," Simpson, chair of the subcommittee that crafted the funding bill, said in a statement. "Naming a theater after her is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts."
When reached for comment, the Idaho Republican's spokesperson, Lexi Hamel, said that President Donald Trump did not request that Republicans make this proposal.
Simpson's subcommittee oversees federal funding for capital repairs, operations and maintenance at the Kennedy Center, which consists of three main theaters, including the Opera House. The theater was designed to host operas, ballets and musicals.
Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, ranking member on the subcommittee, said Tuesday during the full committee markup of the bill that she was "surprised" to find the Kennedy Center provision in the amendment and made clear she opposed it.
"The Republicans snuck in something that's slightly divisive, which is renaming one section of the Kennedy Center after a family member of this administration," said Pingree, who suggested that a congressional authorization is required anyway to rename any portion of the Kennedy Center.
The likelihood of the proposal becoming law is slim. While it's possible the overall funding bill could pass the Republican-controlled House, it will face an uphill climb in the Senate, where government funding bills need Democratic support to pass. Congress will need to pass another government spending bill by Sept. 30 to avoid a shutdown.
If the provision were to become law, however, it would further expand Trump's dominance over the cultural institution in downtown Washington. In February, the president appointed himself as board chair of the Kennedy Center and named new members of the Board of Trustees, including White House chief of staff Susie Wiles; Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance; and other Trump aides, Dan Scavino and Sergio Gor.
The White House didn't immediately return a request for comment about the GOP proposal.

Melania Trump missing in 'separation' as Donald arrives in UK
US President Donald Trump has arrived in Scotland for a five-day visit of golf courses in the country but his wife Melania has remained on the other side of the Atlantic Donald Trump arrived in Scotland as part of a five-day tour of golf courses in the country, although First Lady Melania appears not to have joined him. The US President touched down in Prestwick Airport last night and spoke with UK officials and reporters before he set of for his golf resort in Turnberry, in South Ayrshire, where he is expected to play a few rounds. Mr Trump is expected to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday months after the pair agreed a trade arrangement over certain goods. "I'm in Scotland now," Mr Trump said today on TruthSocial. "Many meetings planned." But it appears Melania Trump has decided to avoid the trip to Scotland. Melania's absence means she will avoid planned protests across Scotland amid Mr Trump's visit. Thousands of protesters are expected in Edinburgh and Aberdeen from around 12pm today. Melania's absence comes amid speculation she and Mr Trump have essentially "separated" following reports she has only been at the White House for two weeks following his inauguration in January. Journalist Michael Wolff, who has written several books about Mr Trump, previously told The Daily Beast Podcast. "They clearly do not in any way inhabit a marriage as we define marriage," he said. He continued: "And I think maybe we can more specifically say they live separate lives. They are separated. The President of the United States and the First Lady are separated." Russia mocked the apparent marriage problems with Russia 1 TV personality Malek Dudakov sating: "In my opinion Trump has certain marital problems. Melania spends most of her time not at the White House, but in New York, along with her son, who recently enrolled in a University. She doesn't even live with Trump." He then pointed to the president's plunging poll numbers, adding: "Trump's ratings have certainly fallen. The latest YouGov polls show only 40 per cent. He has to somehow climb out of this hole. We will see whether or not Donald Trump's able to do it." The comment comes amid speculation Melania somehow influenced her husband to grant more aid to Ukraine amid its war with Russia. Following a conversation between Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, she notified him about a Moscow-ordered strike on Ukraine. While it is unclear whether Melania has any major engagements while her husband is away in Europe, she has been at the heart of peculiar changes in the US. Republicans are mounting efforts to rename the Kennedy Center's Opera House in her honour. The House Appropriations Committee said it is considering an amendment that would result in the theatre to be renamed as the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House." Idaho Republican Representative said: "This is an excellent way to recognize [Melania Trump's] support and commitment to promoting the arts, and I would encourage members to vote for this Republican en bloc amendment." Meanwhile, Democrats told the Washington Post the move was "divisive." Melania is also overseeing the transformation of the iconic White House Rose Garden, a key piece of Americana that has been beamed into households across the world whenever major leaders visit Washington DC. The once lush lawn, complete with rose bushes, has now been concreted over with the White House announcing the "restoration" efforts expected to be completed by mid-August. Officials have defended the move by claiming the changes will enhance guest experiences. But there have been mixed reactions to the change. But Melania is due to travel to the UK with her husband for a historic second official state visit from September 17 and 19. The couple will be hosted by King Charles during their visit to Windsor Castle. The Trumps previously arrived in the UK for a state visit and were hosted by Queen Elizabeth in 2019. The visit will come as much-wanted respite for the president who has seen his approval ratings plunge in recent weeks amid ongoing speculation about late billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. During Mr Trump's successful campaign for a second term, himself and members of his administration said they would release files connected to investigations into Epstein. But Mr Trump has appeared reluctant to release many of the files to the US public, sparking speculation - without evidence - that the US President was somehow more closely aligned with Epstein than previously known.

CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN: US dad moves kids to Russia to escape LGBTQ+ and is sent to front line
In pyrrhic victory news this week, an American dad who moved to Russia to escape wokeness has landed himself on the front lines of the Ukraine conflict, writes Chris Bucktin Christopher Bucktin is an award-winning journalist with more than 25 years of experience, the majority of which he has spent at the Daily Mirror. A former Press Gazette Reporter of the Year, he has held senior roles including Head of Features, Head of Showbusiness, and Head of Content, before relocating to the United States in 2013 to become US Editor. Renowned for breaking agenda-setting exclusives, he has reported from the front lines of America's biggest news stories, led investigations into the Trump administration, and exposed key details in the Jeffrey Epstein case. His career highlights include securing the first interview with the Peru Two inside prison, becoming the first journalist to descend into drug lord El Chapo's escape tunnel, and spearheading coverage of Prince Andrew's ties to Epstein. He holds weekly columns in the Daily Mirror, Daily Star and Reach's regional titles. An American dad who moved his family to Russia to escape what he called LGBTQ+ 'indoctrination' is now getting a very different kind of education - on the front lines of Ukraine. Derek Huffman, 46, was reportedly promised a non-combat role as a correspondent or welder to move to Russia. Instead, he's being 'thrown to the wolves,' according to his wife, DeAnna, who posted a tearful plea on YouTube asking for prayers. With no military experience and only crash-course training, delivered entirely in Russia, Huffman may soon find out that dodging pronouns was the least of his problems. Donald Trump toadie Mike Johnson abruptly sent Congress home early, avoiding a vote on releasing Jeffrey Epstein's long-secret files. The House Speaker accused Democrats of playing 'political games' with the paedophile's case, dismissing their push for transparency as a 'battering ram' against Republicans. But some in Trump's own party aren't quite ready to let the Epstein mess slip quietly away, claiming the files could blow open old Donnie's friendship with Epstein. Rather than letting the files speak for themselves, Johnson pulled the plug, putting a lid on any effort to expose the truth and keep the president's name out of the headlines. So while Congress heads off on an extended holiday, the Epstein scandal quietly simmers on, proving once again that when it comes to facts or fake news, Trump's crew knows exactly how to call time. *** In the latest chapter of 'Only in Florida,' a Tampa man was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence. Troopers found 38-year-old Christopher Spain parked on the shoulder of the Suncoast Parkway following reports of someone driving down the road like it was his front grass. Given that his mode of transport was a sit-down lawnmower, I was surprised. Sadly for Spain, DUI laws apply even when your ride tops out at five mph. *** A Louisiana man who asked police to help remove an unwanted houseguest got way more law enforcement than he bargained for after cops found three child-sized sex dolls in his bedroom instead. Marcus Guillory, 60, told officers he wasn't sure if the woman he knew as 'Aretha' was still hiding in his home, so he asked them to sweep the place. They didn't find Aretha, but they did find enough disturbing dolls to trigger a full search warrant. Police say they recovered one anatomically correct infant doll and two others resembling children under 13. *** One enterprising mum is raking in up to £750 a day by selling her breast milk - not just to babies, but to biceps. While some of her liquid gold goes to new mums in need, a surprising number of buyers are muscle heads guzzling the stuff as a protein-packed pre-workout. The demand is so strong, she's been able to fund dream holidays and even a lavish wedding, all thanks to her high-value, all-natural milkshake bringing the bodybuilders to the yard.

Democratic congressional candidate is dragged out of hearing and pummeled to the ground
A fiery redistricting hearing at the Texas State Capitol erupted into chaos when a Democratic congressional candidate was dragged out of the chamber screaming. Isaiah Martin, 27, was ultimately wrestled to the ground and arrested after unleashing a blistering tirade accusing Texas Republicans of bowing to President Donald Trump and destroying democracy. Martin, a former staffer for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and one of eight Democrats vying to replace the late Rep. Sylvester Turner in Houston's 18th Congressional District, began a thunderous, impassioned statement when the House Redistricting Committee eventually cut off his microphone. 'You already know what the situation is going to be!' he bellowed at lawmakers. 'Many of you Republicans - I'm looking at you - you guys understand the game. You've gotta get Trump's endorsement! That's the name of the game now!' Once Martin's allotted two minutes of speaking time were up, Martin was still talking. It led Republican Rep. Cody Vasut to order the sergeant-at-arms to remove him. But Martin refused to go quietly. 'I'm not finished! I'm not finished!' he shouted, pounding the lectern as stunned attendees looked on during Thursday's meeting. 'What we need in this state are people that have the cajones to actually stand up! Because what you've done to this state is categorically horrific!' As security officers approached, Martin locked his legs and continued to rant about what he called a 'rigged and corrupt system' - accusing GOP lawmakers of bending to Trump's will, selling out working-class Texans, and deliberately gerrymandering political maps to eliminate Democratic voices. 'You are scared and terrified because you're seeking an endorsement!' he thundered. 'Donald Trump runs your vote here! He runs it!' As two officers grabbed his arms and began dragging him from the chamber, Martin turned to the lawmakers still seated on the dais. 'This is as a result of you - you did this!' he screamed. 'You have no shame. No shame for what you have done!' Just as he reached the exit of the committee room, Martin was pummeled to the floor by a Capitol security officer. The moment was caught on camera and posted to social media within minutes while a crowd of onlookers could be heard crying out in shock. 'Jesus! Get off of him!' a woman shouted as Martin struggled beneath the officer. 'He tripped,' one security official claimed. Martin's brother, who posted about the incident online, said Isaiah was cooperating and accused the state of trying to make an example out of him. 'He shouldn't have been arrested in the first place,' his brother wrote, adding that Isaiah had willingly walked with officers after being forcibly removed. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed Martin was arrested and booked into Travis County Jail on charges of criminal trespass, disrupting a public meeting, and resisting arrest, but on Friday, all charges were dropped. Martin's blistering testimony had begun calmly but with a righteous anger which quickly built into a full-scale political condemnation. 'It just seems like the committee is going through the motions,' he said at first. 'But the real conversation we should be having is about retaliation - you've seen it in New York, California, Maryland. It's coming.' He warned that Democratic leaders in other states would respond in kind by gerrymandering Republicans out of power. 'I look forward to New York Governor Kathy Hochul getting rid of you guys,' he said. 'I look forward to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy doing the same thing. And Maryland's Governor Wes Moore. All of them.' Then came the most explosive line: 'You can thank your failed, senile, dilapidated, Epstein-partying president for the work we're about to do to every single one of you.' Stunned lawmakers and attendees sat frozen as Martin continued. When asked to wrap up, he yelled back, 'No, I'm not going to finish! Because who doesn't have a say in this? The people of this state! The 40 million people you just kicked off healthcare! The people who now have to go without SNAP because of what you've done!' Martin ended with one final cry as he was physically pulled into the hallway: 'America will rise up against you!' His outburst and subsequent arrest came as Texas Republicans move forward with a controversial redistricting plan that could net the GOP up to five new congressional seats. Critics say the move is designed to suppress minority and Democratic votes in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms.
