Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says
Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage.
"He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday. "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11."
Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday, earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament.
Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered.
Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition.
"I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso.
They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday, after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight.
"Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow."

The Astros took complete control with a 10-run sixth inning that included a grand slam by Victor Caratini and a three-run shot from Altuve, his second homer of the game. Houston's Christian Walker added another home run, giving him a six-game homer streak at Dodger Stadium dating back to last season when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Walker has eight home runs against the Dodgers in that stretch. Houston finished the game with 11 extra-base hits en route to its ninth win in 11 games. Caratini had two doubles in addition to his slam, and Altuve and Jake Meyers added three hits apiece. Smith's home run was the only bright spot for the Dodgers, who lost for just the second time in 11 games. Los Angeles starter Ben Casparius gave up six runs on nine hits and no walks in three innings. He struck out three. Reliever Noah Davis was rocked for 10 runs in just over one innings. Isaac Paredes gave a sign of what was to come when he opened the game by hitting a first-pitch fastball into the left-field seats. Altuve doubled later in the inning and scored on a Walker single. Smith's home run in the second inning got the Dodgers within 2-1 before the Astros scored four times in the third on a pair of two-run home runs from Altuve and Walker. The offensive eruption in the sixth was the Astros' first 10-run inning since June 2022 against the Chicago White Sox. It was the first time the Dodgers gave up double digits in an inning since the St. Louis Cardinals scored 11 in a 1999 game. Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. gave up one run on four hits over six innings and cruised despite allowing four walks. He fanned four. Cristiano Ronaldo was notably absent from Diogo Jota's funeral on Saturday morning, as the football world mourned the loss of the player and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain. Jota was honoured in his hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, Portugal, where he and his brother were laid to rest. The service saw an outpouring of support from Jota's Liverpool colleagues, members of the Portugal national squad, and his ex-Wolves teammates. Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were spotted bringing red floral tributes into the church, while Portuguese footballers Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Joao Neves also attended the ceremony held at the Chapel of the Resurrection.
