Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says

Reuters12 hours ago
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey, July 4 (Reuters) - It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis.
Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage.
"He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday. "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11."
Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday, earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament.
Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered.
Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition.
"I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso.
They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday, after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight.
"Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow."

Los Angeles Dodgers humiliated by the Houston Astros as they suffer heaviest home defeat 60 years

The Los Angeles Dodgers were humiliated on Friday night, suffering their worst-ever defeat at their own stadium. Shohei Ohtani and the defending World Series champions were obliterated 18-1 by the Houston Astros in the series opener of a matchup between two division leaders. Jose Altuve hit two home runs for the Astros while reaching base five times and driving in five runs. The stunned Dodgers were held to just five hits and Will Smith 's solo home run. It was not a night without controversy, either. Dodgers fans relentlessly booed Altuve throughout his at-bats, chanting 'Cheater! Cheater!' He's one of two players, along with pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., remaining from Houston's 2017 team that beat the Dodgers in the World Series. It later came out that the Astros were stealing signs with the help of video and relaying pitches to batters by banging on a trash can. The Astros took complete control with a 10-run sixth inning that included a grand slam by Victor Caratini and a three-run shot from Altuve, his second homer of the game. Houston's Christian Walker added another home run, giving him a six-game homer streak at Dodger Stadium dating back to last season when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Walker has eight home runs against the Dodgers in that stretch. Houston finished the game with 11 extra-base hits en route to its ninth win in 11 games. Caratini had two doubles in addition to his slam, and Altuve and Jake Meyers added three hits apiece. Smith's home run was the only bright spot for the Dodgers, who lost for just the second time in 11 games. Los Angeles starter Ben Casparius gave up six runs on nine hits and no walks in three innings. He struck out three. Reliever Noah Davis was rocked for 10 runs in just over one innings. Isaac Paredes gave a sign of what was to come when he opened the game by hitting a first-pitch fastball into the left-field seats. Altuve doubled later in the inning and scored on a Walker single. Smith's home run in the second inning got the Dodgers within 2-1 before the Astros scored four times in the third on a pair of two-run home runs from Altuve and Walker. The offensive eruption in the sixth was the Astros' first 10-run inning since June 2022 against the Chicago White Sox. It was the first time the Dodgers gave up double digits in an inning since the St. Louis Cardinals scored 11 in a 1999 game. Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. gave up one run on four hits over six innings and cruised despite allowing four walks. He fanned four. McCullers stayed in the game after taking a 96.1 mph line drive from Ohtani off his left heel in the third. It was his second start since returning from a right foot sprain. Houston right-hander Jason Alexander pitched scoreless ball over the final three innings for the first save of his career, which spans 24 appearances.

Ronaldo misses Jota's funeral after emotional tribute to late teammate

Diogo Jota was laid to rest on Saturday morning, with a host of his Liverpool and Portugal teammates in attendance - but Cristiano Ronaldo was not present. Cristiano Ronaldo was notably absent from Diogo Jota's funeral on Saturday morning, as the football world mourned the loss of the player and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain. Jota was honoured in his hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, Portugal, where he and his brother were laid to rest. The service saw an outpouring of support from Jota's Liverpool colleagues, members of the Portugal national squad, and his ex-Wolves teammates. ‌ Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were spotted bringing red floral tributes into the church, while Portuguese footballers Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Joao Neves also attended the ceremony held at the Chapel of the Resurrection. ‌ Neves, a close friend and former teammate of Jota at both Wolves and on the international stage, was one of those carrying the coffin into the church after arriving from the United States, where he had been competing in the Club World Cup with Al-Hilal. However, Ronaldo, the captain of the Portugal team, did not join the gathering of mourners at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar catholic church. According to Mirror Football, Ronaldo was concerned that his appearance in the small town might detract from the solemn occasion. In recent days, he has chosen to stay out of the public eye, spending time with his family instead, reports the Mirror. Ronaldo did, however, share a heartfelt message on social media following the announcement of Jota's death on Thursday, expressing his disbelief and sorrow: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. "To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." At the solemn gathering, Liverpool figures such as Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson stood united with teammates Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and the new gaffer Arne Slot. Former Reds Caoimhin Kelleher, Jordan Henderson and James Milner also joined to pay their respects. ‌ The tragedy unfolded when Jota and his brother tragically passed away following a horrific car accident involving a Lamborghini in north west Spain that led to the vehicle catching fire last Thursday. The burial came after a private family observance on Friday, attended by Jota's spouse Rute Cardoso, whom he had just wedded the previous month, and close relatives. The Portuguese Football Federation expressed their sadness, stating: "Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his team-mates and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community." They continued, "On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and Andre as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the respective clubs of the players. "We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day."

Kyle Walker leaves Man City for Burnley on two-year deal

Walker joins the newly-promoted Premier League side from Manchester City, where he had a year remaining on his contract. He had started as club captain of City last season, but finished on loan with AC Milan and was not part of Pep Guardiola's squad for this summer's Club World Cup. We are delighted to confirm the signing of England international Kyle Walker. The experienced defender has put pen to paper on a two-year deal ✍️ — Burnley FC (@BurnleyOfficial) July 5, 2025 A move to Turf Moor reunites Walker with former Tottenham and England team-mate Scott Parker, who helped Burnley reach the top-flight with a second-place finish in last season's Championship. The 35-year-old said: 'I'm delighted to be here. When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. 'He's done an amazing job here, guiding the Club back to the Premier League with a 100-point haul, and now we're looking forward, together, at being back in the greatest league in the world. 'Burnley had a tremendous campaign last season, built on an incredible defensive record, and I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad.' Kyle Walker has joined Burnley on a two-year deal (Mike Egerton/PA) Walker began his career with Sheffield United before switching to Tottenham and eventually joined City in a £45million move in 2017, where he has gone on to make 410 English top-flight appearances. In eight years with City, he has won 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League and was part of their treble-winning team. Walker has also been a key cog for England having been capped 96 times. He becomes Burnley's fifth signing this summer as they look to strengthen for their return to the top-flight with Max Weiss, Quilindschy Hartman, Axel Tuanzebe and Loum Tchouana all joining, while Bashir Humphreys, Marcus Edwards, Zian Flemming and Jaidon Anthony's loan deals have all been made permanent.
