Akash Deep with his family. Akash Deep has lost his father and brother in 2015.
Akash Deep's journey to becoming India's newest pace sensation is not just a cricketing story—it's a story of quiet grit, overwhelming loss, and relentless belief. Born in 1996 in the small town of Sasaram in Bihar, Akash came from a region where aspiring to play cricket professionally was often discouraged. With limited opportunities and a suspended state cricket association, the odds were stacked against him right from the beginning. Netizens hailed him as a true fighter after his story went viral.
Growing up, Akash was passionate about the game but was constantly reminded that cricket was a distraction, a road to nowhere. Neighbours told their children not to mingle with him. His father, like many others in the area, hoped he would pursue a government job—perhaps as a constable or even a peon. Though Akash often appeared for these exams out of respect, he never truly attempted them, always returning the forms blank. Cricket, even then, was his calling. — MohlaVivek (@MohlaVivek)
He left Bihar in search of better opportunities and settled in Durgapur, West Bengal, where he began playing for United Club in the Cricket Association of Bengal's second division league. Just when things seemed to be taking a positive turn, tragedy struck. Within a span of six months in 2015, he lost both his father and elder brother. Suddenly, the responsibility of providing for the family fell squarely on his shoulders. The emotional toll forced him to step away from cricket entirely. For the next three years, he focused on survival and supporting his two sisters.
In Kolkata, Akash worked on improving his fitness and bowling under the guidance of India pacer Mohammed Shami. His hard work paid off when he broke into Bengal's U-23 team in 2019, and later debuted for the senior side across all formats. His breakthrough came in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season, where he picked up 35 wickets and helped Bengal reach the final. — adit_prak_94 (@adit_prak_94) His performances did not go unnoticed. In 2022, Akash was picked up by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Though his IPL journey had its ups and downs, he remained consistent on the domestic circuit. His growing reputation culminated in a Test call-up. Against England, Akash delivered a stunning performance at Edgbaston, taking 10 wickets in the match and playing a key role in India's massive 336-run victory. On a surface not known to favour bowlers, his ability to generate pace and movement stood out, earning praise from fans and experts alike. — _Bruce__007 (@_Bruce__007) However, behind this success lay more pain. Just two months before his England Test, his elder sister was diagnosed with cancer. It was yet another emotional blow to a young man who had already endured so much. While preparing for and playing one of the biggest matches of his life, Akash carried the weight of this devastating news in silence. His motivation to perform wasn't just about proving himself on the international stage—it was about bringing a smile to his sister's face amid her battle. — AjSingh1306 (@AjSingh1306) His resilience in the face of immense personal and financial hardship has inspired millions. Netizens hailed him not only for his bowling but also for his incredible journey—one that started in obscurity, passed through grief, poverty, and isolation, and finally reached the grand stage of Test cricket.

Akash Deep bowled 'ball of the series' to Root: Sachin Tendulkar

Reuters Akash Deep celebrates after taking the wicket of England's Joe Root The legendary Sachin Tendulkar hailed Akash Deep as the "standout bowler" of the match and described his delivery to dismiss Joe Root in the second innings as the "ball of the series," following India's emphatic 336-run series-levelling win in the second Test at Edgbaston. Akash Deep returned figures of 6 for 99 in the second innings to complete a match haul of 10 for 187, while Mohammed Siraj claimed seven wickets across both innings to help power India to victory. Tendulkar was full of praise on 'X'. "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be 1 winner. What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled. "Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root," Tendulkar wrote. On a funny note, he also didn't forget to mention Siraj's diving catch at short mid-wicket. "Enjoyed the catch taken by Mohammad "Jonty" Siraj," the owner of 51 Test hundreds commented. Tendulkar also praised the batting effort which set up an easy win. The recently retired Virat Kohli wrote: "Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch." Another former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was all praise for Shubman Gill and his team. "What a performance from shubman gill and his team.. with the bat and now with the (sic) and Siraj just brilliant .indian attack looking far superior than the English attack .. Akasdeep (sic) and Siraj are workhorses. india win without be better result with the fantastic Gill in charge. What a fantastic batting effort," Ganguly wrote on X. NCA director VVS Laxman said: "Well done, Team India on an exceptional victory! It was amazing to see the team's fighting spirit and resilience. State pulls out of Pro Govinda League even as prize amount reaches record Rs 1.5 crore

Mumbai: Sixteen local govinda teams bearing names like Nagpur Ninjas, Lucknow Panthers and Surat Titans will bid for cash prizes worth Rs 1.5 crore during this year's dahi handi festival, thanks to an IPL style bid by owners from different parts of India. However, the Maharashtra govt will no longer co-host or sponsor the event as it did during the previous two years. The organiser, Pro Govinda League, has announced its highest ever prize amount of Rs 1.5 crore for winning teams this season. The championship will be held at the NSCI Dome on Aug 7, 8 and 9. On July 5, a competitive auction was held wherein 16 govinda 'pathaks' were acquired by various team owners. Pro Govinda League was started by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik in Thane in 2018. In 2023-24 the state govt had sponsored the event during his party peer Eknath Shinde 's tenure as chief minister. This year that partnership has ended. Organisers say the move is not linked to having a BJP CM in Devendra Fadnavis. But we have managed to get more private sponsors and telecast partners. We held an auction for 16 teams and have signed a three-year contract with the players and franchisees. Video from MS Dhoni's low-key 44th birthday celebrations goes viral

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], July 7 (ANI): As expected, legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni celebrated his 44th birthday in a low-key way. A video has been doing the rounds on the internet in which Dhoni can be seen cutting his birthday cake in the presence of his JSCA stadium staff in Ranchi. Captain Cool was all smiles. Lauded for his calmness under pressure and his tactical excellence, Dhoni has made a name for himself. He has given back to his country and the city of Ranchi, everything it could have asked him for. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 and now plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni is widely respected. Apart from his sharp wicket-keeping skills, Dhoni pushed the envelope, contributing valuable runs. He formed a formidable middle-order with Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina. Dhoni's strongest format is the ODIs. In 350 ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. He scored 10 centuries and 73 fifties for India, with the best score of 183*. He is India's sixth-highest scorer in ODIs (with Sachin Tendulkar at the top with 18,426 runs). The fact that he managed to score 10,000-plus runs at an average of over 50 while coming down the order makes his statistics even more astonishing. He led India in 200 ODI matches, winning 110, losing 74. Five games were tied, while 11 failed to produce a result. He has a winning percentage of 55. Dhoni has won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 for India as a skipper. Dhoni, known as Chennai Super Kings' 'Thala' (leader), played 98 T20Is for India, scoring 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60, at a strike rate of 126.13. He has two half-centuries in the format, with the best score of 56. He was the winning captain of India's ICC T20 WC 2007 winning team. 'Mahi' led India in 72 T20Is, winning 41, losing 28, one being tied and two failing to produce results. His win percentage is 56.94. Coming to his long-format career, Dhoni played 90 matches, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. He scored six centuries and 33 half-centuries, with the best score of 224. He is the 14th-highest scorer for India in Tests. As a captain, he led India in 60 Test matches, out of which they won 27 matches, lost 18 and drew 15. With a win percentage of 45.00, he is one of India's most successful skippers across all eras. He led Team India to the number one ranking in the ICC Test Rankings. He is also the only Indian skipper to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, doing so in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 series. Dhoni is just as reputable in franchise cricket, being the sixth-highest run-getter in IPL history, with 5,439 runs in 278 matches at an average of 38.30, including 24 fifties, at a strike rate of over 137. He has secured five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles with CSK, making the franchise one of the most popular entities in the sporting world, largely on the basis of his own brand and name. Crowds follow and different fan clubs chant 'Dhoni' 'Dhoni' in unison when the batting legend makes even as much as an appearance inside his dressing room, gearing up for a possible chance at batting. When Dhoni broke into the national team in 2004, nobody could have imagined the heights the then-23-year-old would go on to achieve as a wicketkeeper-batter. His quickfire stumping and catching abilities, massive sixes, and the trademark helicopter shot will no doubt stay fan favourites for generations to come. (ANI)
