Strategic Ties, Palestinian Cause Dominate ASEAN-GCC Summit Agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Strategic cooperation with ASEAN member states and efforts to resolve the Gaza and the broader Palestinian issue were the main focus of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries at the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit here.
This commitment is aimed at ensuring continued prosperity and stability in both the ASEAN and Middle Eastern regions.
Secretary-General of the GCC, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, said the GCC is committed to leveraging all its technical and organisational capabilities to achieve the objectives of the ASEAN-GCC summit and to strengthen close cooperation between the ASEAN Secretariat and the GCC.
'This aims to achieve what our leaders aspire to in terms of effective and realistic cooperation, building on what our relationship has accumulated in terms of political trust, economic integration, and constructive institutional communication,' he said at the ASEAN-GCC Ministerial Meeting on Sunday.
At the same time, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al Yahya said the convening of the second GCC-ASEAN summit must reflect a shared political will to consolidate a comprehensive strategic partnership grounded in mutual respect and common interests.
He added that the world is currently undergoing rapid transformation, necessitating the activation of collective action and the strengthening of partnerships to tackle transboundary challenges, ranging from geopolitical and economic crises to climate change, food and health security, cyber threats, and unstable supply chains.
'We also emphasise the importance of enhancing cooperation between the GCC and ASEAN in three key areas: regional and international peace and stability; expanding economic, trade, and investment collaboration; and strengthening humanitarian, cultural, and social cooperation,' he said.
On the Palestinian issue, the GCC countries reiterated their firm support for the Palestinian people's struggle and their right to establish an independent and sovereign state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Thai PM thanks Anwar for offer to assist in border dispute
BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has discussed the Thai-Cambodia border situation with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a phone call on Friday, where Anwar expressed readiness to assist both sides in resolving the dispute. She said the army had been assigned to coordinate operations and maintain readiness to respond to any developments, prioritising sovereignty protection while ensuring international relations and national security. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Supreme Commander General Songwit Noonpakdee, National Security Council Chief Chatchai Bangchuad, and the military's commanders-in-chief. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops engaged in a brief gunfight in Thailand's north-eastern Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province, where one Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Meanwhile, both countries have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), which is set to meet in Phnom Penh on June 14.– BERNAMA

Evacuate now, Israel warns Gaza as Eid begins
GAZA CITY: The Israeli military issued an evacuation order for residents of parts of Gaza City on Friday ahead of an attack, as it presses an intensified campaign in the battered Palestinian territory. "This is a final and urgent warning ahead of an impending strike," army spokesman Avichay Adraee said. The army "will strike all areas from which rockets are launched." The evacuation order comes at the beginning of the Eid al-Adha holiday, one of the main religious festivals of the Muslim calendar. The Israeli military has recently stepped up its campaign in Gaza in what it says is a renewed push to defeat Hamas, whose October 2023 attack sparked the war. International calls for a negotiated ceasefire have grown in recent weeks. Hamas's lead negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya said on Thursday that the Palestinian group was ready to enter a new round of talks aimed at sealing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Talks aimed at brokering a new ceasefire have failed to yield a breakthrough since the last brief truce fell apart in March with the resumption of Israeli operations in Gaza. Israel and Hamas appeared close to an agreement late last month, but a deal proved elusive, with each side accusing the other of scuppering a US-backed proposal. Israel has faced mounting pressure to allow more aid into Gaza, after it imposed a more than two-month blockade that led to widespread shortages of food and other essentials. It recently eased the blockade and has worked with the newly formed, US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to implement a new aid distribution mechanism via a handful of centres in south and central Gaza. But since its inception, the GHF has been a magnet for criticism from the UN and other members of the aid world – which only intensified following a recent string of deadly incidents near its facilities. Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. According to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, at least 4,402 people have been killed since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, taking the war's overall toll to 54,677, mostly civilians.--AFP

Hun Manet Briefs Anwar On Cambodia-Thai Border Dispute

Manet in his Facebook posting said he explained the Kingdom's position related to the Cambodia-Thailand border to Anwar during a phone conversation. bootstrap slideshow 'Cambodia adheres to the principle of maintaining peace, friendship, and good cooperation with Thailand. 'Cambodia's decision to refer Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple and Mom Bei areas to the International Court of Justice is to seek an early, peaceful and permanent solution to the border issue in these areas rather than to prolong the uncertainty which can lead to renewed armed conflicts,' said Manet. Border dispute between both the neighbours was triggered after a Cambodian soldier was killed following a clash with Thai troops in Preah Vihear province on May 28. He further added that the Kingdom continues to cooperate with Thailand to expedite the demarcation and delimitation of the border (except the four areas mentioned above) through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC). The joint commission meeting is scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh. 'Cambodia continues to maintain relations between the two countries through all existing mechanisms for the mutual benefit of the two peoples,' he told Anwar, who is the chair of ASEAN this year.
