Wilmar to become AWL Agri majority shareholder

Yahoo18-07-2025
Wilmar International is set to become the majority owner of India-based AWL Agri.
The Singapore group has agreed to buy more shares in the Fortune edible-oils maker from Indian conglomerate Adani Enterprises.
Wilmar International and Adani Enterprises had been partners in the former Adani Wilmar venture until December.
Adani Enterprises decided to leave the alliance to invest further in energy, utilities, transport and logistics.
At the time, Wilmar International struck a deal buy 31.1% of the venture, which has been renamed AWL Agri.
A month later, Adani Enterprises sold another 13.5% stake.
In a stock-exchange filing yesterday (17 July), Wilmar said it held 43.9% of AW Agri, with Adani Enterprises retaining 30.4%.
Wilmar has agreed to purchase another tranche of shares, representing a further 11-20% of AWL Agri, at Rs275 ($3.19) a share.
When this new deal is finalised, Wilmar will hold between 54.9% and 63.9% of the business. The company said it will 'endeavour to bring in strategic partners/ identified investors' for the chunk of the new stake it does not take up.
The remaining 10.4% Adani Enterprises owns in AWL Agri will be sold 'to a set of pre-identified investors', the Indian group said.
Established in 1999, the now AWL Agri is headquartered in Ahmedabad. The business runs 24 factories in 15 cities. Its operations span edible oils, a wider range of food products and a third division called Industry Essentials, which takes in chemicals.
Earlier this week, AWL Agri reported its fiscal first-quarter results covering the three-month period to the end of June.
Revenue rose 22% to Rs17.06bn despite a 2% fall in volumes. The company booked higher revenues across its three divisions, although volumes from its edible oils and food and FMCG units fell.
'The company witnessed a temporary volume decline, primarily influenced by the consolidation of its regional rice operations and muted consumer demand. Encouragingly, the core categories delivered healthy volume growth and revenue rose 21% year on year, driven by higher edible oil realisations,' MD and CEO Angshu Mallick said.
Profit after tax fell 24% to Rs238m.
Last month, Wilmar agreed to acquire UK consumer goods company PZ Cussons' 50% equity stake in their Nigerian edible-oils joint venture for a cash consideration of $70m.
"Wilmar to become AWL Agri majority shareholder" was originally created and published by Just Food, a GlobalData owned brand.

Trump hikes tariffs on Canada to 35%, announces new rates from 15% to 40% for dozens of countries

The White House took a step forward with President Trump's plan to remake the trade landscape by releasing new details Thursday evening that included a raft of new tariff rates now formally authorized by executive order, which set new levels from 15% to 40% on over 70 countries. The move represents a giant shakeup in the US's trade order, with outlined rates that range from a 35% tariff on Canada (up from 25%) to rates above 30% on nations from Algeria to Switzerland. But there's a last minute catch, as these new rates will not go into effect for seven days, instead of a midnight Friday deadline as originally planned — according to the text of the order. "These modifications shall be effective ... on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 7 days after the date of this order," reads the now signed order. India, after initial high hopes for a deal that have bogged down in recent weeks, is set to face a 25% rate but now appears to have another week to negotiate. Taiwan is another top US trading partner and is set to see a 20% rate. The White House documentation released Thursday also confirmed some of the parameters of recent deals including 19%-20% rates on a range of Southeast Asian nations and an unchanged 10% rate on the United Kingdom. Dozens of other nations also saw their tariff rates upped to 15% from 10% — in line with deals sketched out in recent days that included that headline 15% tariff rate on Europe, South Korea, and Japan. But some nations were not included in Tuesday's release — those omitted included many nations with which the US currently has a trade surplus — who therefore are set to see their rates remain at 10%, in a surprise relief for some after comments from Trump in recent days suggested 15% would be his new minimum. Thursday's announcement comes as previously announced 50% levies on copper are also set to go into effect at midnight tonight. The White House also has plans for 50% tariffs on Brazil which are set to be in fully in effect in a few days. Thursday's advancement did come after one significant delay, with a 90-day pause on new tariffs on Mexico, as the president decided to keep rates there at 25% after a 'very successful' meeting. The rapid-fire tariff moves also came as small business importers and the US Justice Department clashed Thursday over whether President Trump even has the authority to take these actions. Trump's team says the 1977 International Economic Emergency Powers Act authorizes the president to 'regulate' international commerce after declaring a national emergency. It's also the latest culmination of Trump's intense second term focus on tariffs. He declared "I am a tariff man" back in 2018 but has gone far further in his second term. The latest calculations from the Yale Budget Lab found that these new duties, before Thursday's tweaks, suggested consumers already face an overall effective tariff rate of 18.4%, which is the highest rate since 1933. That figure is sure to rise in the coming days as the new tariff levels are digested. The duties — as Trump himself notes almost every day — have also already set multiple new tariff revenues records even at the previous levels centered around a 10% floor for tariffs. As Trump put it on Thursday 'Tariffs are making America GREAT & RICH Again' adding that lower levels seen in previous decades were hurting America and 'now the tide has completely turned.' Female-founded semiconductor AI startup SixSense raises $8.5M

A Singapore-based deep tech startup called SixSense has developed an AI-powered platform that helps semiconductor manufacturers predict and detect potential chip defects on production lines in real time. It has raised $8.5 million in Series A bringing its total funding to around $12 million. The round was led by Peak XV's Surge (formerly Sequoia India & SEA), with participation from Alpha Intelligence Capital, Febe, and others. Founded in 2018 by engineers Akanksha Jagwani (CTO) and Avni Agarwal (CEO), SixSense aims to address a fundamental challenge in semiconductor manufacturing: converting raw production data, from defect images to equipment signals, into real-time insights that help factories prevent quality issues and improve yield. Despite the sheer volume of data generated on the fab floor, what stood out to the co-founders was a surprising lack of real-time intelligence. Akanksha brings a deep understanding of manufacturing, quality control, and software automation through her experience building automation solutions for manufacturers like Hyundai Motors and GE and led product development at startups like Embibe. Agarwal adds technical experience from her time at Visa, where she built large-scale data analytics systems, some of which were later protected as trade secrets. A skilled coder with a strong background in mathematics, she had long been interested in applying AI to traditional industries beyond fintech. image credits: sixsense Together, the duo evaluated sectors from aviation to automotive before landing on semiconductors. Despite the semiconductor industry's reputation for precision, inspection processes remain largely manual and fragmented, Agarwal told TechCrunch. After speaking with more than 50 engineers, it became clear there's significant room to modernize how quality checks are done, she added. Fabs today are filled with dashboards, SPC charts, and inline inspection systems, but most only display data without further analysis, Agarwal said. 'The burden of using it for decision-making still falls on engineers: [they must] spot patterns, investigate anomalies, and trace root causes. That's time-consuming, subjective, and doesn't scale well with increasing process complexity.' San Francisco | REGISTER NOW SixSense provides engineers with early warnings to address potential issues before they escalate with capabilities such as defect detection, root cause analysis, and failure prediction. SixSense's platform is also specifically designed to be used by process engineers rather than data scientists, Agarwal said. 'Process engineers can fine-tune models using their own fab data, deploy them in under two days, and trust the results — all without writing a single line of code. That's what makes the platform both powerful and practical.' The competitive landscape includes in-house engineering teams using tools like Cognex and Halcon, inspection equipment makers integrating AI into their systems, and startups including and Robovision. SixSense's AI platform is already in use at major semiconductor manufacturers like GlobalFoundries and JCET, with more than 100 million chips processed to date. Customers have reported up to 30% faster production cycles, a 1–2% boost in yield, and a 90% reduction in manual inspection work, the founders said. The system is compatible with inspection equipment that covers over 60% of the global market. 'Our target customers are large-scale chipmakers — including foundries, outsourced semiconductor assembly and test providers (OSATs), and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs),' Agarwal said. 'We're already working with fabs in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Israel, and are now expanding into the U.S.' Geopolitical tensions, especially between the U.S. and China, are reshaping where chips are made, driving new manufacturing investments across the globe. 'We're seeing fabs and OSATs expand aggressively in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, India, and the U.S. — and that's a tailwind for us. Why? Because we're already based in the region, and many of these new facilities are starting fresh — without legacy systems weighing them down. That makes them far more open to AI-native approaches like ours from day one,' Agarwal told TechCrunch.
