Hundreds Of Kashmiri Pandits Gather At Annual J&K Mela Under Tight Security
Srinagar:
Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits have gathered at Tulmulla in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district to participate in the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela, an age-old festival symbolising Kashmir's rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Despite a weather advisory and security concerns after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, faith has brought the Kashmiri pandits back to their roots for the annual reunion that follows over three decades of separation and displacement.
After the outbreak of terrorist attacks in 1990, thousands of Pandit families had migrated from the Valley to Jammu and other parts of the country. Official records show over 64,000 Kashmiri Pandit families are living outside Kashmir Valley - among them 43,000 in migrant camps in Jammu and over 19,000 in Delhi.'
Dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, the Kheer Bhawani Mela is one of the largest Hindu gatherings in the Valley, second only to the Amarnath Yatra.
For many years, local Muslims looked after her temple located in the middle of a spring, where devotees offer milk and rice pudding. Kashmiri Pandits believe that the water at the spring shrine changes colour and it can foretell the future. If the colour of the water changes back, it's considered a bad omen.
"The Mela is a symbol of communal harmony. All arrangements here have been made by local Muslims. Despite efforts to sow discord between the two communities, no one could break this centuries-old bond," said a Kashmiri Pandit leading prayers at the spring shrine.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the Mela. Hundreds of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF personnel have been deployed in and around the temple. All roads leading to Kheer Bhawani have been sanitised to ensure a hassle-free moment for the devotees.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha visited the shrine today and offered prayers. Recently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had also visited Tulmulla and reviewed preparations for the Mela.

Police, Bajrang Dal and the Making of Anti-‘Love Jihad' Squad in Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal: After a series of videos emerged showing Madhya Pradesh police publicly parading crime accused forcing them to chant slogans like ' Police hamari baap hai (police is our father)' and ' Gaai hamari mata hai (cow is our mother)', now, a new video from Bhopal shows a police officer – on camera, in uniform – warning Muslims to stay out of a gym, raising fresh concerns over the police's involvement in promoting communal narratives. The controversy, this time, centres on sub-inspector Dinesh Shukla, who is seen sitting with Bajrang Dal members in a purported video addressing people inside a gym, stating, 'Yahan koi bhi Mohammadan na ayega, na training lene ayega, na training dene ayega. Meine keh diya (No Mohammedan will come here, neither to take training nor to give it. I have said it).' SI Shukla, in a widely circulated video, appears to enforce an informal ban on the presence of Muslim men in public spaces like the gym, reflecting the language used by right-wing groups who push the 'love jihad' conspiracy theory. While the sub-inspector has been line attached, his presence, alongside self-declared vigilantes, has raised serious questions about the narrowing gap between law enforcement and ideological policing in Madhya Pradesh. Slogans, raids and threats in the name of honour Hindutva vigilantes have been increasingly targeting Muslim individuals in the state under the pretext of 'love jihad '. The term lacks any legal basis but is still used to allege that Muslim men lure Hindu women into romantic relationships to convert them to Islam. The Madhya Pradesh Police recently also formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe allegations of forced religious conversions linked to a rape case . Ayodhya Nagar police station station house officer (SHO) Mahesh Lilhare confirmed to The Wire that the incident took place on May 28 following a visit by members of Hindutva organisations to the gym. He said that the matter is under investigation, but the video that is circulating seems to be edited. However, in another video from a gym in Bhopal, men associated with Hindutva organisations can be seen barging into the gym while shouting slogans like ' Jai Shri Ram ' and 'Love jihad karne walon ko, joote maaro saalon ko (Beat up those who do love jihad ).' One of the men, who is also seen in the other video with SI Dinesh Shukla, is seen advising the gym management, asking, 'Ladkiyon ko training kaun deta hai (Who trains the girls)?' He continues, ' Aap ek cheez dhyan rakho, agar love jihad ka case aapke gym mein ek bhi aata hai to uske zimmedar aap rahoge (Keep one thing in mind, if even one love jihad case comes up from your gym, you will be held responsible).' The Wire cannot confirm the authenticity of video. The man adds, ' Hamara ek nivedan hai aapse, Hindu ladkiyon ke liye Hindu trainer hi rakhoge (We request you to appoint only Hindu trainers for Hindu girls).' He is further heard saying, ' Hamara main maqsad hai apni behen-betiyon ko love jihad se bachana (Our main aim is to protect our sisters and daughters from love jihad ).' Referring to past incidents, he adds, ' Jis prakar ka kratya Indore mein hua, TIT College mein hua – love jihad nahi chalega (What happened in Indore, at TIT College – love jihad won't be tolerated),' ending it with the slogan, ' Love jihad murdabad (Down with love jihad )'. A shared vocabulary of hate According to the 2024 India Hate Lab report , nearly half of all recorded hate speeches, around 581 incidents, referred to conspiracy theories. Among the most common were terms like 'love jihad ,' 'land jihad ,' 'population jihad ,' ' thook (spit) jihad ,' and 'vote jihad .' SHO Mahesh Lilhare said, 'There was a complaint from Hindutva organisations alleging that non-Hindu gym trainers were using Hindu names with the intent of carrying out love jihad or religious conversion. Several organisation members gathered, and our staff accompanied them to the gym. The name of the gym is still unknown, but we are contacting the girls to verify the details. We spoke to the sub-inspector in question, who denied making such a statement, saying the video was clipped. We have taken cognisance of the video and are investigating whether it is authentic or edited.' He further stated that the police have no intention of acting against any caste or community. 'Any action will be taken strictly according to rules and regulations, based on the outcome of the investigation. The police do not represent any religion or group. We are doing our job, as mandated under the IPC, CrPC, BNS and BNSS. Any language or terminology we use is strictly in line with legal provisions.' While the police stress neutrality and adherence to legal procedures, the term 'love jihad ' has steadily seeped into public discourse, used freely by both political leaders and sections of the media. Bhopal MP Alok Sharma was quoted as saying , 'We are making a list and will be submitting it to the police. The police will do their work, the law will do its job, and in Madhya Pradesh, under Dr Mohan Yadav's government, no one has permission to indulge in love jihad or land jihad. The law will take strict action against such people.' This is not the first time Sharma has made such remarks . Recently, he publicly demanded sterilisation as a punishment for those allegedly involved in love jihad . In a similar aggressive rhetoric, Madhya Pradesh minister Vishwas Sarang had earlier said that such individuals should be shot in the chest. Last month, a resident of Bhopal filed a petition in the Madhya Pradesh high court against the use of the term 'love jihad ' by major Hindi dailies accusing them of giving a communal angle to a rape case, and in doing so, linking the crime to entire Muslim community. Advocate Deepak Bundele told The Wire that the matter will be heard on June 19. The Wire is now on WhatsApp. Follow our channel for sharp analysis and opinions on the latest developments.

Government to count castes, not classes in 2027 census: Sources
The Government of India will undertake the next nationwide census in 2027, and for the first time, caste enumeration will be formally included in the exercise. However, official sources told India Today TV that the data collected will record individual castes, not social categories or classes such as Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). This means the census will not provide aggregate figures for groups like the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). One of the key reasons cited is the variation in caste categorisation across states — castes classified as OBC in one state may fall under the general category in another. As per the protocol, every individual will be required to mention their caste along with their religion. This will apply to all communities, including Muslims, Christians, and others. However, officials admitted there will be no verification mechanism to check the accuracy of self-declared caste data. Government benefits tied to caste, such as reservation, will continue to be granted only on the basis of officially issued caste certificates. The enumeration will strictly be a caste count and not a socio-economic or class-based assessment. This implies that while the names of castes will be recorded, no effort will be made to classify them into reserved or non-reserved categories under the census process, sources added. They further clarified that the census will have no bearing on the delimitation exercise scheduled for 2026, which is likely to be based on the 2011 census. Also, the 50 per cent reservation cap, currently under judicial scrutiny, will remain a matter for the Supreme Court to decide, with no role for the government in this context. The 2027 census will be conducted digitally and is expected to take only three years, a significant reduction from the usual five-year process. It will be carried out in two phases, with March 1, 2027, as the reference date for most parts of the country. In snow-bound and non-synchronous regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be October 1, 2026. The move to include caste enumeration followed years of demand from political parties and state governments for data that could guide welfare policies and social justice initiatives. The last such comprehensive population census took place in 2011.

Second Ram Darbar Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya's Ram temple: Check date, time
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya is currently hosting its second 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony (June 5). The ceremony will see the installation of Raja Ram and other deities at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi complex — a significant milestone following the inaugural Pran Pratishtha held in January last year. Ram Darbar second Pran Pratishtha: Date and time The festivities began on June 3 and will conclude on June 5, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presiding as the chief guest. The Anjaneya Sewa Trust is overseeing the event, which will commence at 11 am on Thursday. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will preside over the installation of the Ram Darbar on the first floor of the temple, a ceremony that coincides with his 53rd birthday. Shashikant Maharaj, president of the Anjani Seva Sansthan, detailed the rituals that will mark Raja Ram's reinstallation. These will include Vedic chanting and a havan, with the chief minister also performing the ceremonial 'uncovering of the eyes' of the idols of Lord Ram and Sita. Second Pran Pratishtha: Security, crowd management Extensive security arrangements have been put in place for the three-day celebrations. However, devotees can continue their routine darshan of Ram Lalla. Authorities have initiated a verification process for tenants and residents in unauthorised settlements, and personnel from the CRPF, SSF, and PAC are on site. As part of the ceremony, 62,000 boxes of prasad are being dispatched from Lucknow. Kshitij Gupta, marketing head of Chhappan Bhog, said the prasad includes barfi made with a blend of chickpeas and moong dal. Ram Darbar installation and design In the Ram Darbar, idols of Lord Ram, Mata Sita, Hanuman, and Lakshman will be installed on a two-ft-high white marble throne. These idols and the throne were crafted in Jaipur, Rajasthan, using white marble. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir has been constructed in the traditional Nagara architectural style. Its intricately carved walls depict various Hindu deities. The Ram Darbar itself measures 4.5 ft. The idol of Lord Ram will be adorned with elaborately designed crowns, bejewelled belts, and embroidered robes featuring zari and precious stones. Costume designer Manish Tiwari was commissioned to design the deity's attire. Access restrictions and cultural exhibits at Ram Darbar To maintain the sanctity of the site, only a limited number of devotees will be allowed on the temple's first floor. The second floor will showcase the Ramayana in multiple languages, including its oldest known version. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ram Mandir on January 22, 2024. Speaking to ANI, Mahamandaleshwar Vishnu Das explained, 'On January 22, Pran Pratishtha was done for the 'baal roop' [child form] of Lord Rama, now it is Raja Ram [King Ram].'
