EAM S Jaishankar lands in Beijing today, first visit in 5 years; set to meet Chinese counterpart Wang Yi
Jaishankar will participate in a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers on July 14-15.
Before travelling to Tianjin for the SCO meeting, Jaishankar is expected to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues, including rare earth supplies to India, the Dalai Lama's succession, the recent India-Pakistan tensions, and the resumption of direct flights between the two countries.
In the last few months, India and China have initiated a number of measures to repair the bilateral ties after completing the disengagement of troops from the last of the two face-off sites in October last year.
Jaishankar's visit comes less than three weeks after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh travelled to the Chinese port city of Qingdao to participate in the SCO defence ministers' conference. The meeting was unable to issue a communique, as India refused to endorse the draft without referring to the Pahalgam terror attack.
The SCO is a China-led multilateral group comprising nine permanent members, including India and Pakistan. China is the current chair of the SCO, and it is hosting the meetings of the grouping in that capacity.
In December, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval visited Beijing and held the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang.
Doval visited China last month as well for a meeting of top security officials of the SCO member nations. China is the current chair of the SCO, and it is hosting the meetings of the grouping in that capacity.
In a statement on the SCO meeting, the Chinese foreign ministry mentioned that Jaishankar 'will also pay a visit to China.'
'The Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States will be held in Tianjin on July 15. At the invitation of Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, foreign ministers of other SCO member states and heads of SCO's permanent bodies will attend the meeting… In addition to attending the meeting, India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will also pay a visit to China,' the statement quoting a government spokesperson said.
The succession of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is a thorn in China-India relations, the Chinese embassy in New Delhi said on Sunday, ahead of Jaishankar's China visit.
In a message posted on X on Sunday, Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India Yu King said that the Indian government has made political commitments to China.
'It recognizes that Xizang Autonomous Region is part of the territory of the People's Republic of China and India does not allow Tibetans to engage in political activities against China in India,' she added.
Jaishankar's visit comes as India and China work to repair bilateral ties after years of tension.
Before heading to China, Jaishankar held a series of extensive high-level interactions during his visit to Singapore on July 13, underscoring the importance India attaches to its ties with the country, the MEA highlighted in an official statement on Sunday.
During the visit, he called on the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam and held meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, the ministry said.

According to its website, IIMUN is a youth-run organisation that aims to bring the world closer, the Indian way. Modi resolved to free the country and politics from dynastic politics and casteism in his Independence Day speech on August 15 last year, and said initially they want to bring forward 100,000 young people whose families have no political background. Goyal spoke about the first pledge, the resolve to make India a developed nation, and asked the youth to visualise themselves over the next few decades as they would be the primary drivers of this transformation. 'This commitment can only be realised if we also embrace the remaining four pledges with equal seriousness.' He said the second pledge is to shed the colonial mindset. Goyal referred to India's rich history as a global economic powerhouse. He said centuries of foreign subjugation eroded confidence and imposed limitations. 'We must not be bound by the constraints of the past but instead aspire to meet global benchmarks and set ambitious goals.' He said the third pledge is to take pride in India's heritage. 'India's history, culture, traditions, and value systems hold deep significance as we move towards becoming a developed nation. Vikas bhi, virasat bhi. We must pursue development while preserving our heritage. Our diversity is our strength, and we must amalgamate our traditions into a collective journey towards progress,' he said. He referred to the fourth pledge and said the unity and integrity of the nation must be paramount. Goyal commended IIMUN for its efforts to engage youth from across India and abroad. He said unity is India's greatest strength and must be nurtured at every level. Goyal added that this collective spirit is fundamental to the country's journey towards becoming a developed nation. He cited the fifth pledge and spoke about the collective resolve of 1.4 billion Indians to contribute to nation-building. Goyal emphasised that a developed India can only emerge when all citizens work together like a family, with shared responsibility and compassion. 'We must be concerned for the marginalised, care for the underprivileged, and ensure that our progress is inclusive and sustainable.' Goyal encouraged the youth to accept nation-building as a duty and a privilege, and to perform every task with commitment and dedication. He paid tribute to the role of teachers and mentors and said their contributions are often taken for granted during school and college years. ‘Do something very quickly': ‘Concerned' Supreme Court directs Centre to trace Russian woman in custody row
The Russian mother, who allegedly absconded with her four-year-old boy in a child dispute case with the Indian father, has not left the country through legal channels, the Central government informed Supreme Court on Friday, adding, she still remains 'untraceable'. Appearing for the centre and Delhi Police, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati said that the Ministry of Home Affairs have issued 'look out notices' and 'hue and cry' notices to all senior police officials across the country to trace the missing Russian woman. A bench led by Justice Surya Kant while flagging several issues, directed the authorities to immediately inquire with Railway officials and other means of public transport to trace any moment of the missing lady and the child. Apart from this, the apex court bench also directed the Delhi police to check CCTV footage of all entry and exits of Delhi NCR in their ongoing probe to find the Russian woman and the child. 'They need to do something very quickly', Justice Surya Kant said and posted the matter to 21 July. Earlier on Thursday, the apex court had asked the Centre to issue a look out notice with regard to the woman and the minor to ensure she did not leave the country. It had also directed senior Delhi Police officials to immediately trace a child of a Russian mother and an Indian father.

Siddaramaiah releases Rs 50 crore to each MLA amid pressure over fund shortage
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the release of Rs 50 crore in development grants for each MLA, following weeks of internal discussions and mounting pressure from party legislators who had complained of fund shortages. The move comes after a series of one-on-one meetings that several Congress legislators held with state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, where they expressed concern over the lack of financial support to carry out developmental work in their meetings took place at the Congress party office in Bengaluru, where the legislators reiterated that the delay in fund disbursal was stalling key infrastructure projects in both urban and rural segments. Following the MLAs' representations, Surjewala is learnt to have taken up the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, during separate meetings held in Bengaluru and Delhi. After several rounds of internal deliberations, the Chief Minister has now sanctioned the long-pending allocation, as was originally proposed in the state budget. Each MLA will receive Rs 50 crore towards constituency development, with the funds earmarked for infrastructure works such as roads and July 17, fresh concerns were raised again, this time by an Independent MLA supporting the Congress-led government. Darshan Puttannaiah, who represents Melukote in Mandya district, said the funds released were not enough to meet the needs of rural areas. Acknowledging the fiscal pressure of the five Guarantee schemes, he said there was a need to balance social welfare commitments with infrastructure development.'You know the financial situation and why we are not getting funds. They have given money now but we need more funds. This is not adequate, you know how many villages don't have roads and drains. There are 236 villages and we need Rs 5-10 crore for each. It is going for that (Guarantees) as well. We have to give it to that (Guarantees) and give funds. Both can't be done together,' Puttannaiah month, Congress MLA from Kagwad, Raju Kage, threatened to resign over prolonged delays in executing development works in his constituency, blaming the state administration for inaction. Kage expressed frustration that not a single work order had been issued, two years after the Chief Minister approved a Rs 25 crore special MLA accused the state machinery of complete failure and said he was disheartened by the lack of progress. 'I am so disheartened that I am even considering resigning. Don't be surprised if I go and submit my resignation to the Chief Minister in the next two days,' he had timely release of the grants is likely to ease discontent within the Congress legislature party, where some MLAs had publicly criticised the government's delay.
