L.A.'s NantG Power to Provide Batteries for Next-Gen Long Range Windrose EV Semi

NantG Power, a maker of advanced high-performance lithium-ion battery technology, plans to supply its manganese-rich LMFP battery solution to Belgian-based EV Truck maker Windrose Technology, with the goal of increasing the fully loaded range of the Windrose electric sleeper truck to 500 miles with 825 kWh of battery power.
NantG Power's technology takes a radically different approach from the widespread lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based EV batteries used in other vehicles. Adding manganese creates a battery that combines low cost with high performance – as well as high safety. The LMFP battery offers 20% better performance as well as 23% reduction in range loss during col weather. Manganese is readily available as well – it's the 12th most abundant element in Earth's crust and is also a byproduct of steel making.
'At NantG, we bring more than 70 years of combined battery experience and we're committed to marry innovative technology and manufacturing know-how to meet the rapidly growing demand for vastly improved energy density and safety for electric vehicles,' said Dr. Fabio Albano, CTO of NantG, the scientist who created the first solid-state battery prototype in 2007 at the University of Michigan. 'We're excited to work with Windrose because, like us, they are a global innovator across four continents that shares the same commitment in their practical, innovative low-emission truck platform.'
Windrose long-haul EV trucks serve North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. 'Windrose has already proven that an EV truck based on both the LFP and NMC chemistry can be cost effective relative to diesel trucks,' said Wen Han, founder, CEO and chairman. 'However, by deploying NantG Power's innovative manganese-rich battery chemistry, we're going to further improve our truck performance, cost and most importantly, safety'
The two companies also are exploring joint manufacturing for this new battery solution in both the United States and the EU. This is a further addition to Windrose's global production strategy in China, Belgium, France and the U.S.

Last Call for the $7,500 EV Tax Credit: It Expires in September

Car dealers are always advertising that now is the best time to buy, but if you're in the market for an electric vehicle, now might actually be the best time to buy. The reason: Congress voted to pull the plug early on a massive tax incentive that could save buyers up to $7,500 on new EVs. Instead of expiring in 2032, the tax break now ends Sept. 30 of this year. An EV you buy in October or later won't qualify. The move by congressional Republicans and signed by President Donald Trump was designed to help pay for the continuation of tax cuts from Trump's first term, which some say are most helpful for the wealthiest taxpayers. Congress gutted a host of clean-energy tax breaks in the bill Trump signed on July 4, essentially repealing much of the Inflation Reduction Act passed under President Joe Biden. With the EV credit expiring mid-year, it sets up a weird 2025 for an auto industry that also faces potential challenges from Trump's tariff policy. Thanks to international supply chains for parts and materials, this is likely to increase the cost of cars and trucks even if they're assembled in the US. If you're in the market for an EV, that means you might want to think a little more closely about your buying schedule. "My ordinary advice for everyone all the time is don't be in a big hurry, take your time and make a careful decision," Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book, told me. "This is the one circumstance where you might want to be in a big hurry." It makes sense that EV sales are at a record pace through the first six months of the year, according to KBB data, and the end of the tax credit could lead to a third-quarter boom, with the bottom falling out in the fourth quarter. Watch this: Optimizing Your EV's Efficiency Is Easier Than You Think 07:14 What is the EV tax credit? Right now, the federal government provides a credit of up to $7,500 for a new electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell electric vehicle. The credit is split into two equal parts, with a $3,750 credit each if the vehicle meets requirements for the sourcing of materials for the battery components and critical materials. Because of those requirements, only a handful of vehicles qualify. You do need to meet some income limits -- you can't have taxable income above $150,000 if you file individually, $300,000 if you're married filing jointly or $225,000 if you file as head of household. There's also a credit for used EVs equivalent to 30% of the sales price up to $4,000. The list of qualifying vehicles here is more extensive, but the used EV market is also a lot smaller than the new EV market. Although that has been changing -- more than 100,000 used EVs were sold in the US in the second quarter of the year, compared with more than 300,000 new EVs, according to KBB data. To get the credit, you can either claim it on your tax return the following year or you can transfer the credit to the dealer so they can apply it to your purchase cost. That second option has become more popular since it's easier and reduces your up-front cost. You can also get the credit on leased vehicles. Dealerships are very familiar with applying credits toward leased EVs, Tucker said. Should I buy an EV now before the credit ends? The most important part of deciding whether to buy a car is to buy one when you're ready to. Don't rush into a big purchase just because a tax credit is ending. The fact is that EVs are coming down in price and are often similar, when you consider the total cost of ownership, to the price of a gasoline-powered car. You should also consider that not every EV qualifies for this credit anyway -- the one you're eyeing might not see any change in pricing, at least not due to the credit expiring. (Tariffs are another issue.) But the end of the credit does mean dealers will likely be looking to reduce their stock of electric cars by the end of September. That means if you're in the market and you're eyeing one of the qualifying vehicles, you may want to move to make a purchase before October, Tucker said. There could be more strategy at play. Tucker suggested looking at dealers that have significant stocks of EVs, which may offer steeper discounts to get them off the lots before the prices go up. The best time to buy might be mid- or late September, right before the credit ends, to get the best deal possible. "If I tell you it's your last chance to save $7,500 on something, that's a sentence you don't hear very often," Tucker said. Don't let this moment overwhelm other good car-buying advice, though. Tucker advises that one of the best ways to get a good deal is to buy a vehicle that's right for you most of the time, even if it doesn't necessarily meet every possible scenario you can think of. Do you really need a third row of seating if you'll only use it when company is in town? Do you need a big pickup truck if you're mostly just hauling yourself to the office? CNET's auto expert, Antuan Goodwin, suggests reevaluating your car-buying goals to save money. For example, Goodwin says, instead of a top-tier model, consider a mid-trim level with only the features you truly need. You can also consider low-mileage, pre-owned cars or leasing as alternatives to buying new. "If going electric would stretch your budget, exploring combustion alternatives like plug-in or traditional hybrids are good compromises," Goodwin said. "That's mostly because I don't want to dissuade anyone who's 'set on going electric' from doing so, but for someone on the fence, alternatives exist."

Surprising BlackBerry update from veteran trader focuses on sales guidance

BlackBerry (BB) has been on quite a ride. There was a time when the Canadian company's smartphone was the device to have among business professionals, government officials and security-conscious types. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter At its peak in 2009-2010, BlackBerry commanded more than 20% of the global smartphone market, with 85 million subscribers. More than a third (35%) of BlackBerry users said they would pick their personal digital assistants over their spouses if they had to choose, according to a 2008 survey, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. And 87% said they take their PDAs into their bedrooms. Yikes. BlackBerry started sliding with the rise of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Android-based devices. And by 2016 the company said it was getting out of the smartphone game in favor of software and enterprise services, particularly in cybersecurity. Last month, BlackBerry reported first-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street's expectations. "We made a very solid start to fiscal year 2026 with our results beating the top end of guidance almost entirely across the board," Chief Executive John Giamatteo said during the company's earnings call. BlackBerry's QNX division, which specializes in software for embedded systems, particularly in industries like automotive, medical devices and industrial automation, reported revenue of $57.5 million, up 8% year-over-year and surpassing the company's guidance. "QNX thrives in high-performance safety-critical use cases," Giamatteo said.. "Autonomous drive is a great example." More Tech Stocks: Amazon tries to make AI great again (or maybe for the first time)Veteran portfolio manager raises eyebrows with latest Meta Platforms moveGoogle plans major AI shift after Meta's surprising $14 billion move In April, the company said WeRide WRD, an autonomous-driving-technology company, was using QNX as the foundation for L2+ passenger vehicles. "In fact, this technology is already being deployed in a couple of Chery Automobile vehicle models that are on the road in China today," Giamatteo said. "As autonomous drive continues to ramp worldwide, we see this as an exciting opportunity for BlackBerry." William Kerwin, a senior equity analyst for Morningstar, wrote on June 25 that "BlackBerry showed solid execution, but its outlook for fiscal 2026 remains weak." "We expect macroeconomic uncertainty, slow government order cycles, and negative impacts from US automotive tariffs to weigh on sales throughout the year," he added. Kerwin, who who maintained his $3.60 per share fair value estimate on BlackBerry, said the company's government business can return to growth after this year, "coming back in line with our long-term expectations for high-single-digit firm revenue growth." Several investment firms issued research reports on BlackBerry following the earnings report. On June 25 RBC Capital raised its price target on BlackBerry to $4 from $3.75 and affirmed a sector-perform rating on the shares, according to The Fly. The Q1 results were above estimates on better-than-expected secure-communications and QNX software revenue. Management's outlook is conservative and still assumes an uncertain auto and macroeconomic environment, the investment firm said. BlackBerry's pipeline is seeing good growth, but its visibility to auto production is low and new deals may be pushed out, RBC added. Related: Veteran trader takes a strong stand on BlackBerry stock Canaccord raised its price target on BlackBerry to $4.60 from $4.25 and maintained a hold rating on the shares. The investment firm said the quarterly results came in meaningfully ahead of expectations, highlighted by strong internet-of-things/QNX results, which continues to be the standout leader within the business. Canaccord said the outlook for the business has improved over the past year. Strategic initiatives will be incrementally streamlined and meaningfully positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization create new organic and inorganic investment opportunities. TheStreet Pro's Stephen Guilfoyle has updated his plan for BlackBerry. In June, the veteran trader, whose career dates back to the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange in the 1980s, cut his long position in BlackBerry ahead of the earnings release. "Effectively, I took about half of my position off at an average price of $4.32," he told readers in his recent column. "My net basis on the entire trade is $2.93, so a profit of 47% on that portion of the trade. We'll always take trades like that when we can." But he did leave half his position on the table just in case he was wrong about making an exit. "The shares popped sharply higher at first and then continued to deteriorate from there," he said. "I have last seen the shares cross the tape early on Monday morning, just above the $4 mark, which is actually a key technical area for the name." At last check on Tuesday, Blackberry's shares had recovered and were trading around $4.12. Guilfoyle said BlackBerry's first-quarter report provided forward-looking sales guidance solid enough for the full fiscal year, but moderately disappointing for the fiscal second quarter. Wall Street-wide profit taking continued, he said. BlackBerry is scheduled to report Q2 earnings in late September, he noted, "so there is a way to go." "We're still working with a nicely profitable trade here. No reason to make a rash decision," Guilfoyle said. Smash Burger Restaurant Gets an Opening Date on the Las Vegas Strip

The Cosmopolitan has been without a dedicated burger restaurant ever since Holsteins closed in July 2024. This changes as of Monday, July 28, when Naughty Patty's opens its doors at the Block 16 Urban Food Hall, near China Poblano. The casual, retro-style spot leans into Las Vegas's ongoing obsession with smash burgers, serving thin, lacy patties with nearly caramelized edges. The burgers are made from a blend of ground chuck and brisket, seared and topped with lettuce, tomato, and raw onion, plus a citrusy yuzu and sesame oil sauce. The anticipated restaurant will also serve chili-style hot dogs, crispy grilled cheese sandwiches, and seasoned fries tossed in furikake. For dessert, thick concretes come loaded with toppings in nostalgic flavors like Oreo and strawberry shortcake. Naughty Patty's will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Naughty Patty's.
