Electric about-face could open the door for new truck makers

'All your competitors just announced their strategy,' Craig Segall, former deputy executive officer and assistant chief counsel of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), told The Hill. 'How quickly can you ramp up to eat their lunch?' Segall asked. This now unmasked strategy — an about-face on compliance with the Golden State's heavy-duty vehicle standards — came to light this week when four manufacturers sued California regulators over the matter. Soon after, the Federal Trade Commission declared that a voluntary 'Clean Truck Partnership' between the companies and the state was 'unenforceable.' Last week's lawsuit, filed Monday by Daimler Truck, International Motors, PACCAR and the Volvo Group, alleged the federal government had deemed California's emissions rules 'unlawful' in June. At the time, President Trump signed off on three congressional resolutions revoking a Biden administration waiver that had allowed the state to set these rules. Under the 1970 Clean Air Act, California can create emissions standards that are stricter than federal norms but must acquire a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency to do so. Segall described Monday's lawsuit as 'an audacious move,' noting in a Thursday op-ed that truckmakers just two years ago supported the Clean Truck Partnership, which he helped negotiate. He accused companies such as Daimler, which controls 40 percent of the country's truck market, of 'badly letting the trucking industry down.' Meanwhile, he warned, China is accelerating electric truck adoption. Pointing to the fact that delivery firms such as Amazon have smaller electric trucks operating nationwide, Segall forecast that 'giant semitrailers' will make a similar transition soon. With that in mind, he stressed there is 'an interesting opening' for other competitors, such as Chinese electric truck startup Windrose. Industry veteran Rustam Kocher echoed these sentiments in a recent post on LinkedIn, calling upon Windrose, other Chinese e-truck manufacturers and Tesla Semi to fill in this gap and 'let the market-share eating competition commence.' 'This industry is changing, just like the light-duty industry is changing,' Kocher told The Hill.

Greenlane Announces Key I-10 Charging Corridor, Powering Long-Haul Electric Pilots with Windrose and Nevoya

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Addressing a critical gap in infrastructure for electric trucking along one of America's busiest freight highways, public charging infrastructure developer and operator Greenlane is establishing its second commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging corridor connecting Southern California to Phoenix via Interstate 10. The corridor expansion is supported by a new strategic partnership with Windrose Technology, a pioneering electric truck original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which has validated the viability of long-haul electric trucking through successful single-charge journeys from Colton, next to San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, to Phoenix. Looking ahead, Windrose plans to manufacture 2,000 electric trucks in 2026 and scale up to 10,000 in 2027 globally—unlocking a new era of freight movement, powered by Greenlane's expanding public charging network. 'Our second corridor was strategically selected to best support the carriers and shippers who keep our economy moving,' said Patrick Macdonald-King, CEO of Greenlane. 'Windrose's remarkable achievements during testing demonstrate that our high-performance charging network can handle the most demanding freight operations, giving us confidence that this I-10 corridor will serve as a critical backbone for zero-emission freight. By establishing charging infrastructure along key transportation arteries, we're providing the foundation fleets need to scale their electric operations.' The corridor is one of several planned routes as the company works to develop a nationwide network of commercial EV charging for medium- and heavy-duty fleets. The second corridor includes the recently opened flagship Greenlane Center ™ in Colton, next to San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, as well as new sites to be developed in Blythe, California, and Greater Phoenix, Arizona. Windrose's R700 Class 8 electric semi successfully completed single-charge journeys from Greenlane's Colton location to both Buckeye, AZ, near Phoenix (I-10 corridor) and Las Vegas (I-15 corridor) with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 74,420 pounds. The Phoenix route represents a particularly significant milestone, as the nearly 300-mile journey with near-maximum payload demonstrates the real-world capability of electric trucks for demanding long-haul freight operations. These single-charge hauls follow successful interoperability testing at the Colton site, where the Windrose R700 Class 8 electric truck achieved a peak charge rate of 772 kW with its dual-gun charging technology, exhibiting Greenlane's ability to support rapid turnaround times essential for freight operations. 'Achieving nearly 300 miles with a GCWR of 74,420 pounds on a single charge with 12% battery left proves that electric long-haul trucking isn't just theory—it's proven real-world performance,' said Wen Han, founder and CEO of Windrose Technology. 'This is what happens when innovative vehicle platforms meet world-class charging infrastructure. Our next step is to prove diesel parity in the United States, Europe, Oceania and South America, as we have already proven in China.' Under a new strategic partnership, Windrose will utilize Greenlane's flagship center in Colton as its base of operations for several vehicles and to power its R700 electric truck for pilot customers along the I-15 and I-10 freight corridors. One of the first customers on these routes will be Nevoya, a next-generation electric trucking carrier focused on helping shippers and third-party logistics carriers transition to electric transportation. Nevoya plans to operate battery-electric trucks along the I-15 and I-10 corridors, with the Greenlane Center in Colton serving as a base for charging and driver support. 'Greenlane's I-10 charging network creates the infrastructure breakthrough that electric trucking needs—and Nevoya is positioned to capitalize on it,' said John Verdon, Chief Commercial Officer at Nevoya. 'As we launch operations on the I-10, this partnership allows us to demonstrate that long-haul electric trucking is not just possible—it's practical, scalable, and the future of freight.' In April, Greenlane opened its first flagship charging center in Colton, California, featuring more than 40 high-speed chargers, including 12 pull-through and 29 bobtail lanes for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs), amenities such as restrooms and wifi, carports, 24/7 security, and additional offerings like office space and parking. To learn more about Greenlane's charging hub and technology ecosystem, visit or the Colton Greenlane Center at 1650 Fairway Drive in Colton, CA. About Greenlane Greenlane Infrastructure, LLC's mission is to design, develop, install and operate a nationwide, high-performance, electric public charging and hydrogen refueling network for medium- and heavy-duty battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles. L.A.'s NantG Power to Provide Batteries for Next-Gen Long Range Windrose EV Semi

NantG Power, a maker of advanced high-performance lithium-ion battery technology, plans to supply its manganese-rich LMFP battery solution to Belgian-based EV Truck maker Windrose Technology, with the goal of increasing the fully loaded range of the Windrose electric sleeper truck to 500 miles with 825 kWh of battery power. NantG Power's technology takes a radically different approach from the widespread lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based EV batteries used in other vehicles. Adding manganese creates a battery that combines low cost with high performance – as well as high safety. The LMFP battery offers 20% better performance as well as 23% reduction in range loss during col weather. Manganese is readily available as well – it's the 12th most abundant element in Earth's crust and is also a byproduct of steel making. 'At NantG, we bring more than 70 years of combined battery experience and we're committed to marry innovative technology and manufacturing know-how to meet the rapidly growing demand for vastly improved energy density and safety for electric vehicles,' said Dr. Fabio Albano, CTO of NantG, the scientist who created the first solid-state battery prototype in 2007 at the University of Michigan. 'We're excited to work with Windrose because, like us, they are a global innovator across four continents that shares the same commitment in their practical, innovative low-emission truck platform.' Windrose long-haul EV trucks serve North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. 'Windrose has already proven that an EV truck based on both the LFP and NMC chemistry can be cost effective relative to diesel trucks,' said Wen Han, founder, CEO and chairman. 'However, by deploying NantG Power's innovative manganese-rich battery chemistry, we're going to further improve our truck performance, cost and most importantly, safety' The two companies also are exploring joint manufacturing for this new battery solution in both the United States and the EU. This is a further addition to Windrose's global production strategy in China, Belgium, France and the U.S.
