Passengers left ‘angry and scared' after woman tries to force open emergency door at 30,000ft
An 'abusive' Jetstar passenger who attempted to open the emergency exit door was restrained by an off-duty police officer during a 'nightmare' flight to Australia on Monday (31 March).
Flight JQ-34 from Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport to Melbourne was forced to return to Bali when an unidentified female passenger lifted the handle of a cabin door, triggering an alarm on the Airbus aircraft.
A fellow passenger shared on Instagram: 'Just got off our Jetstar flight from Bali to home. Two hours in, a lady tried opening the emergency door because she wanted to get off mid-air.
'Absolutely nightmare. Had to turn around and land back in Bali for her to get arrested. 260 angry and scared passengers. Police escorted her off plane.'
In a clip from the cabin, the captain told passengers: 'A lady down the back of the aircraft that tried to physically open the door and lifted the handle. We got a door warning at the front of the aircraft... the safest course of action was to come back here and return to land.'
Australian reality star Brooke Jowett wrote on social media: 'Two hours into our flight, flight attendants start running, people start freaking out and we get told to put our seatbelts on immediately.'
She added in an Instagram story that a fight between the woman and Jetstar staff had escalated 'because she wanted to sit in a different row and have a chair that could recline'.
The Australian Survivor contestant said: 'One of the guys who was sitting in front of us was down near the toilets and he pulled her away from the door as she was trying to open it.
'He was an off-duty police officer so he saved the day, thank god for that.'
Data from FlightAware shows that the aircraft departed Denpasar at 8.29pm local time, before making a U-turn over the Indian Ocean around an hour into the journey.
According to the airline, the passenger was removed from the aircraft by the local authorities in Bali.
Jetstar said in a statement: 'We had an aircraft return to Denpasar last night after a disruptive passenger attempted to open one of the aircraft doors and was abusive to our crew.
'The safety and welfare of our customers and crew is our top priority and we thank them for the way they responded to the situation.
'This sort of unacceptable behaviour will never be tolerated on our flights.'
The airline added that customers travelling on the cancelled journey had been provided with an alternative flight.

The beginner was on all fours when his instructor flipped him forward before twisting his head and neck. Greener immediately lost control over his body and fell to the ground. He was rushed to the hospital - just days before he was supposed to graduate from college in 2018. The horrific accident crushed his cervical vertebrae, effectively paralysing his entire body below the neck. Greener was forced to spend months in the hospital, recovering from multiple strokes as a result of his injuries, according to the New York Post. He then sued Del Mar Jiu Jitsu club in San Diego for the injuries and blamed his instructor, Iturralde, for his 'dynamic, aggressive grappling style". Greener, now a mountain climber and a popular motivational speaker, was first awarded $56 million by a San Diego jury in 2023. Rahul Ravipudi, one of Greener's attorneys, said: "[The judgement] cements a critical legal victory not only for our client, but also for injured athletes across California by reaffirming that sports instructors and facilities may be held accountable when they unreasonably increase risks beyond those inherent in the sport." BJJ legend Rener Gracie, who was called as an expert witness in the case, said: "The black belt instructor did a technique that placed his entire body weight on Greener's neck, causing him to instantly fall limp and lose all function of his limbs." It comes after a champion martial artist tragically died after a horrific collapse in the ring. Mohit Sharma, 21, was fighting in the second round of a university wushu tournament on Monday in India. People immediately rushed to provide assistance, and medics were called. Sharma, though, could not be revived after a reported suspected heart attack. According to the Indian Express, he was taken to the on-site medical centre then transported to a district hospital. But the young boxer sadly passed away as he was declared dead on arrival at Kharar Government hospital on Monday evening, it was later confirmed. Behind the pictures, promises and the plans for a life together - the beautiful days - changed into something into sadness with emotional manipulation and eventually physical harm. I loved deeply, believed in our future and stood by someone I thought would protect me and instead I was left alone and harmed in ways I never imagined. I was not only failed by him but deeply affected by the presence of unresolved ties to his past. Yes I posted an Instagram story with a simple yes or no question about if your ex should be a part of your present relationship. I felt there were too many people in our relationship: me, my boyfriend and his ex. 'Three's a crowd', they say. I asked so many times if we could be just the two of us, but the answer was a strong NO. I experienced what I can only describe as targeted emotional distress which he allowed to continue. The ex and her family put us through so much misery and false accusations, I won't go into details. A gentleman does not abuse you and end up in jail and call you the love of his life. A gentleman does not blame you for his actions. A gentleman will confide in his partner, family and close circle of friends, keeping them close and safe. A gentleman chooses you always and leaves the past in the past - including exes. Life is to be lived together and not to please people who want to take advantage of you. At the end of the day, fame can only do so much - it's all about being strong and growing together. Life is simply not a reality TV show, life is real. I have tried to understand why. I have cried so many tears thinking about the way he chose to hurt me. He said he loved me and I believed him and here we are. There is now a legal record of what happened. Violence has no excuse - no matter how much love preceded it. To those who questioned me for staying as long as I did: I stayed because I believed in love. I believed he and we could grow, could heal, could choose peace. But love doesn't survive in chaos. And it cannot survive where violence lives. To every woman reading this: if you've ever questioned your worth, your safety or your sanity in a relationship - this is your sign. You deserved to be loved with care and integrity. And you are not alone. To the men: real strength is protection. Real love is safe.
