CM Mann running 'circus' instead of a government, says Punjab BJP working chief
After assuming the charge amid the presence of State BJP President Sunil Jakhar, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, State BJP National Secretary Narinder Singh Raina and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu, Sharma, who is the legislator from Pathankot, accused Chief Minister Mann of diverting state's attention from core issues by raising trivial matters like "circus performers" distract people from real-life challenges.
He questioned why CM Mann, despite convening a special Assembly session on sacrilege, had failed to deliver on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal's promise on January 12, 2022, of ensuring justice within 30 days in sacrilege cases, including Bargari, through fast-track courts.
To obscure the AAP's failure to fulfill its key election pledge of eliminating drugs within 30 days of assuming power, CM Mann launched 'Yudh Nshe Virudh' as a diversionary tactic.
"When an AAP MLA accused Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha of having links to the drug trade, CM Mann again attempted to shift focus by declaring this so-called 'war'," he said.
Similarly, Sharma alleged that Mann staged a "circus" around corruption to avoid answering why no action has been taken against the four senior Congress leaders he accused of graft in the Punjab Assembly.
Sharma, 61, is a veteran party leader and served as the State BJP President twice -- from February 2010 to January 2013 and January 2020 to July 2023.
Last week, he was appointed as BJP's Punjab unit working president.
On the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) issue, Sharma claimed Mann's government has neglected Punjab's interests by failing to fill the state's reservation of 2,550 posts in the BBMB over the past three years.
Instead of addressing this the state government has repeatedly raised the issue of central security forces' deployment in NITI Aayog meetings, passing resolutions in Cabinet and Assembly sessions, the State BJP Working President said.
He added that objections should have been raised in BBMB board meetings to halt the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployment at the Bhakra-Nangal dam project.
Amid widespread protests by farmers and the BJP against land pooling, CM Mann called another special Assembly session as another attempt, Sharma alleged, to divert the public attention.
Law and order in Punjab have deteriorated sharply, with gangsters operating with impunity, the State BJP Working President said.
"Traders face extortion threats, daylight murders occur, women's jewelry is snatched in broad daylight, custodial deaths are reported, and fake encounter allegations arise," he added.
"Yet," Sharma said, "Chief Minister Mann remains preoccupied with his 'circus' to evade accountability."
"Bhagwant Mann seems to have forgotten he is no longer a stage performer but holds a constitutional office, the Chief Ministership of Punjab," Sharma remarked.
He concluded with a stern warning: "The Punjab BJP will respond in the same language Mann uses, but four times louder, on the streets."

Why Sanjay Jagtap's induction will unsettle BJP allies NCP and Shiv Sena in Pune politics
Pune district Congress chief Sanjay Jagtap's decision to join the BJP is not merely a blow to the Opposition party. It could also shake the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, increasing the prospects of the BJP getting a firm grasp in rural Pune–something that had eluded the party in the past. Pune district had for long been a bastion of the Congress, but the party slowly lost its grip to the Sharad Pawar-led NCP after the veteran leader split the Congress. However, the Congress continues to have its presence in district politics. The Congress lost its ground completely in the 2024 elections as it failed to win any Lok Sabha or Assembly seat in the district. Its tally from three legislators in 2019 to zero in 2024 was the party's worst-ever election performance in Pune. 'The loyalist families leaving the Congress is a cause for concern. The party leadership has to give it a thought. There has been a lot of damage to the organisation and efforts have to be taken to change the mindset of those trying to jump for survival in politics by giving up the Congress ideology,' said Anant Gadgil, a Congress spokesperson. Jagtap was the Congress face in Pune for the nine years during which he held the district president post, since 2016. He resigned two days ago to join the BJP. 'The Congress party trusted Jagtap so much that they made him district unit chief for nine consecutive years and now he has quit the party to join the main rival BJP. His jumping over has damaged the party as he was at the helm of affairs for long and is likely to damage the party further by taking along the party cadre that is with him,' said a local Congress leader. The past efforts of the BJP to get control over the politics of Pune district did not yield much success despite the party managing to win a record number of seats in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state. The only option for the BJP has been to strengthen its base by inducting well-established political families in other parties into its fold. In 2019, the BJP managed to induct former minister Harshvardhan Patil into the party but lost him to the NCP(SP) in 2024. However, since the 2024 Assembly elections, the BJP has been successful in its efforts to expand its base in Pune district. A few months ago, the party inducted three-time Congress legislator Sagram Thopte, son of former Congress minister Anantrao Thopte, into the party and added an influential political family of Bhor to its kitty. Now, the BJP has got Sanjay Jagtap, who is from the influential political family of Purandar. 'Our family always believed in the ideology of Congress but in the last few years, things have changed. We have realised that the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis is taking everyone together on the path of progress,' said Jagtap after announcing his BJP entry. The BJP has been desperately trying hard to destroy the Pawars' bastion of Baramati over the last few elections. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP pitted a Dhangar community leader, Mahadeo Jankar of the RSP, against incumbent Supriya Sule but missed the opportunity by a small margin to take over the reins of Baramati. It got the wife of then RSP legislator Kanchan Kul, a distant relative of Pawar, to contest on a BJP ticket against Sule in 2019 but didn't succeed. In 2024, Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar, who was the NCP candidate supported by the BJP, failed to defeat Sule of the NCP(SP). Incidentally, Sule got leads from the Purandar and Bhor Assembly constituencies, where the Jagtap and Thorat families are influential, respectively. The BJP's presence has been very weak in these segments. After the 2024 Assembly elections, the BJP represents Khadakwasla and Daund constituencies, while the NCP represents Baramati, Indapur, and Bhor, and the Shiv Sena represents Purandar. Now, the BJP will get an upper hand in four of the six Assembly segments in the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. The Pawars, especially Ajit Pawar, who has taken over the charge of political control from his uncle Sharad Pawar in the Lok Sabha constituency, will feel threatened. 'We are aware of the changing political situation in the district but are strong enough to retain our hold. Every political party wants to expand their base. So the BJP is doing just that,' said a local NCP leader. While the NCP led by Ajit Pawar holds eight Assembly seats in the district, its alliance partner Shiv Sena has one seat, Purandar, where former minister Vijay Shivtare defeated Sanjay Jagtap. Now, Jagtap has joined the BJP, posing a threat to Shivtare and indirectly to the Sena.

New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has demanded justice for Soumyashree, a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, who self-immolated herself in protest over sexual harassment by her Head of the Department. According to an official press release, 'The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) is devastated, enraged, and deeply shaken by the tragic death of Soumyashree, a 20-year-old student of FM College, Balasore, who set herself ablaze after months of unbearable trauma and institutional silence.' The NSUI has alleged institutional silence and apathy from the college administration and the Odisha Government, and has called for immediate action against the accused and those who failed to protect Soumyashree. 'Soumyashree was a victim of sexual harassment at the hands of a faculty member. She cried out for help, pleaded for justice, but was met with indifference and apathy. The Odisha Government, the college administration, and a system controlled by BJP-backed appointees failed her at every step. From the Chief Minister's chair to the district administration, not a single authority acted to protect her.', the release stated. The NSUI has alleged that Soumyashree's pleas for help were met with indifference and apathy by the authorities, including the college administration and the district administration, which are claimed to be controlled by BJP-backed appointees. 'Adding to the disgrace is the silence of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the very student organization Soumyashree was a part of. ABVP failed its own member. Not only did they ignore her cries for justice, but they are now shamelessly attempting to spread false narratives and deflect blame. Their silence when she needed them most, and their lies now, are acts of betrayal. 'Let it be stated unequivocally No NSUI office bearer is involved in this case. These baseless accusations are not just false they are an insult to Soumyashree's memory and a vile attempt to shield the real perpetrators,' the release read. According to the release, NSUI alleged, 'This is not just a tragedy. This is institutional murder. NSUI stands firmly with Soumyashree and her family. We demand immediate arrest and prosecution of the accused faculty member, an independent judicial probe into the role of college authorities and administrative cover-up, suspension of officials and staff who ignored Soumyashree's repeated complaints and accountability from the Odisha Government and BJP-backed machinery that allowed this injustice. NSUI will fight for justice for Soumyashree.' Meanwhile, the Odisha State Congress President Bhakta Charan Das has called for a statewide 'bandh' on July 17 in protest against the death of the student. Das demanded the resignation of the State Education Minister, local MLA and MP over the death of the Balasore student. 'Our demand is that the Education Minister, the MLA, and the MP--all three--should resign, and their party should expel all three... On the 17th, we have called for an Odisha bandh, and we appeal to all sections to support it,' Das told ANI. The Odisha Congress Chief noted that the victim, even after complaining at multiple forums, did not get justice. 'The student knocked on every door for justice and even got an FIR registered... but she did not get justice... She even went to the MLA. The MLA could have ensured justice for her, but he did not do so... The MP also did not take this matter seriously... Was it not their responsibility to take this matter seriously? ... If even a little action had been taken, the situation would not have come to the point where that student had to take her own life... The government did not even realise that this is their responsibility,' he added. The 20-year-old student set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. (ANI)
