Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government is targeting to establish Kota Kinabalu as a literary city while positioning the State as a regional arts hub. State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the initiative will be realised with support from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and various stakeholders, with the goal of making Sabah a regional reference point for literature and language. 'I am confident that through the programs being implemented in Sabah, the State will become one of the regional references in the field of literature and language,' he said at the Wacana Puisi Esei 2025 closing ceremony, here, Friday. Arifin said numerous major programs have been conducted across Sabah, including in his Membakut constituency, involving secondary school students. He described these efforts as excellent initiatives to bring communities, particularly students, closer to language and literary values. He expressed optimism that the dream can be realised with assistance from DBP, Badan Bahasa, Institut Penilaian Sabah and literature and language-related non-governmental organisations. He noted that the initiative aligns with efforts to establish Sabah as a destination for educational tourism, language tourism and literary tourism, citing the presence of participants from Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia and various Malaysian states as evidence of Sabah's potential as a regional focal point. The ceremony also saw Arifin presenting awards to winners of the Sayembara Menulis Puisi Esei 2025 and Anugerah Kemanusiaan Puisi Esei 2025. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The chartered flight from Malaysia Airlines carrying the premier and the Malaysian delegation departed the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 2.15 pm. This series of visits by the Prime Minister, starting with a three-day official visit to Italy, forms part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. The visits to these major economic hubs — Rome, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro — aim to strengthen Malaysia's diplomatic ties and trade relations with the respective nations. These three markets collectively recorded bilateral trade valued at RM50.91 billion (USD11.14 billion) last year. The Prime Minister is accompanied by a business delegation comprising representatives from major Malaysian corporations and innovative enterprises, including Petronas, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Maybank, FGV, YTL Power, and Sunway. Anwar's inaugural visit to Italy is being undertaken at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to Malaysia's Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam, the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations between the countries across a wide range of sectors. In addition to the roundtable with France's industrial giants, the Prime Minister will engage with local Muslim leaders, meet Malaysian citizens in France, and deliver a public lecture at Sorbonne University on July 4. After the Paris stopover, Anwar will be in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th BRICS Summit upon invitation from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Trust the legal process, Armizan says after Sabah leaders charged with graft
Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Armizan Mohd Ali said GRS leaders have never publicly commented on corruption cases involving other parties, even when under pressure. PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali today called on all parties to put their trust in the legal process after an assistant minister and a GRS assemblyman were charged with corruption yesterday. In a statement, Armizan said that nobody should jump to conclusions based on perceptions, sentiments, or one-sided media reports. 'Let us not be quick to label someone a corrupt criminal before the legal process has run its full course. Perception is not always reality, and we have a legal system for a reason. 'I am not asking anyone to be particularly fair to GRS, but let us not turn a blind eye to the realities before us,' he said. He also said that when it came to allegations of corruption, many leaders across various parties had been implicated – some from the opposition, and others from within the ruling coalition itself. 'Some have already been tried and acquitted, others have been convicted. Some were granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, while others have ongoing trials that have dragged on for years. 'As for the so-called 'money trails' in corruption cases, we've seen funds go directly into personal accounts, into spouses' accounts, proxy companies, or even take the form of assets and other benefits.' But despite such cases, Armizan said GRS leaders had refrained from making public or official comments on the legal proceedings of leaders from other parties. 'Even when we have been cornered or pushed to the wall, we have not retaliated with comparisons. We have instead chosen to let the legal process take its course,' he added. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Andi, the Tanjung Batu assemblyman from Umno, and Yusof, from Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, were charged with receiving RM200,000 and RM150,000 in bribes, respectively. Businessman Albert Tei was charged with bribing them. All three claimed trial. Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor said his administration would let the law take its course and would not interfere in any investigation or legal action against any of its government leaders. Sabah PKR chairman Mustapha Sakmud, however, reportedly described the scandal as a shocking development that could significantly change the Sabah political landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
