Makeup tutorial: What is K-Beauty? Here's how to get the look

Calgary Herald29-06-2025
This summer's biggest makeup trends are what you'd expect — clean esthetic, warm tones, nude lipstick and glowing skin. The idea here is less is more; letting your blush and bronzer do most of the work and using techniques that require little to no touch up throughout the day.

What is K-Beauty you ask? It's a beauty esthetic and inspiration from South Korea that really leans into the idea of smooth satiny skin, buttery lip and blurred cloud-like finishes. Here's a four-step makeup routine inspired by this beauty trend using a few drugstore products.

I started by hydrating my skin, as this is one of the most important steps to achieve a glowing, supple complexion. Using a large Quo blender brush, I applied Cover Girl Clean Fresh Skin Tint Foundation to even out my skin. I then dabbed on a light application of concealer under my eyes to brighten any shadows.

I opted to use a cream bronzing stick to contour my face and add warmth and discovered Cover Girl Tru Blend Skin Enhancer Contour Balm, which I absolutely loved and was so easy to use. I traced my face where I wanted to create more definition and used the Quo blender brush to blend everything seamlessly into my skin.

Jennifer Lopez has a message for those wondering if she really uses her skincare line

Jennifer Lopez poses on May 26. The actress and singer answered questions from followers in a video posted on her JLo Beauty Skincare account. Lopez addressed some comments, including praise for her moisturizer for feeling 'like silk' and a complaint that her brand is too expensive. (Michael Tran/AFP/Getty Images via CNN Newsource) As she sings on 'I'm Real,' Jennifer Lopez assures you what you see is what you get when it comes to her skin. The actress and singer answered questions from followers in a video posted on her JLo Beauty Skincare account. Lopez addressed some comments, including praise for her moisturizer for feeling 'like silk' and a complaint that her brand is too expensive. But it was the question, 'Do you use this every day or just when the cameras are on?' which tickled Lopez. 'That's funny because I'm standing in my actual bathroom right now,' she said. 'No, I use it. I use it every day.' Lopez is not new to this beauty game. She launched JLo Beauty in 2021. Last year, she shared with Who What Where an important part of her routine. 'I've worn sunscreen every day since my early 20s, and I really, truly believe it is the key to keeping youthful-looking skin,' she said at the time. In the recently shared video, Lopez said another question she gets a lot is, 'Will this make me look like J. Lo?' Sorry, people. While the products may help Lopez look like 'the best version' of herself, she kept it real and encouraged customers to aim for the best version of themselves.

Article content Reviews and recommendations are unbiased and products are independently selected. Postmedia may earn an affiliate commission from purchases made through links on this page. Article content We try dozens of beauty products each month. These were our testers' three favourite launches this week: Article content Article content They say: A fresh citrus scent from the Replica collection that features notes of spritz accord, orange and vetiver, along with base notes of cedarwood, patchouli and vanilla. This unisex scent, as with all Margiela Replica fragrances, is inspired by a scents (and sense) of place, this time, the Amalfi Coast. Article content They say: An eye serum from the French brand Institut Esthederm that brightens the skin in the eye area. Addressing common area concerns such as puffiness and upper eyelid sagging, the serum aims to reduce the appearance of signs of aging. Article content We say: 'WOW!' was the first thing we heard back from our tester on this eye serum. A dedicated skin-care user in her 60s, she found this serum provided visible improvement to her eye area's firmness, smoothness and texture. Featuring a massaging applicator ball tip, the product applies easily and stays comfortable (not sticky or slick) on skin without any eye area irritation. Article content Chanel Sublimage L'Extrait Pommade Or Article content They say: A luxury skin pommade from Chanel that features a balm-like texture and a rich blend of polyfractioned vanilla planifolia and Himalayan swertia extract and camellia ceramides to boost skin. Ultrafine light-reflecting pearlescent particles added into the balm give skin an instant radiance. Article content We say: There's no doubt about it, this is an ultra-luxe formula. But, for those whose beauty budget allows such a splurge, this balm is amazing. Our tester found it could be used multiple ways — as a base under skin care, as an overnight treatment or added as a final step in a skin-care routine. The rich formula (a little goes a long way) provides instant hydration and comfort, while giving skin a golden glow. Article content

Beauty Buzz: The 3 best beauty products we tried this week from Clarins, Josie Maran and Biossance

Article content We try dozens of beauty products each month. These were our testers' three favourite products this week: Article content Article content They say: A three-in-one eye serum from Biossance that features a blend of niacinamide, vitamin C, and caffeine to hydrate, de-puff and brighten the eye area. The serum features a 360-degree Lymphatic Roller applicator to help cool and 'refresh' skin during application. Article content Article content They say: A sunscreen from the French brand Clarins that features a sun protection factor of 30. The major draw to this broad-spectrum formula is its dry-to-the-touch and matte finish. Article content We say: Sunscreen is a year-round must-have in every skin care routine. But we get that not everyone loves the feeling of some sunscreen formulas. This formula is a must-try for those who don't like the slippery feel or added shine of some face sunscreen options. Our tester found the product had a velvety feeling on skin that stayed lightweight, even with makeup applied overtop. True to its claims, it gave skin a nice matte finish, too. Article content Article content Article content Josie Maran Cali Collection fragrance Article content They say: A new fragrance collection featuring four scents — Golden Hour, Bohemian Fig, Vanilla Vibezzz and Topless Tangerine. The fragrances are formulated using 100 per cent natural scent oils, according to the company, along with argan oil and jojoba, to nourish skin and hair where applied. Article content
