Parents allowed to block children's games and friends on Roblox
Parents will be able to block their children from specific games and experiences on Roblox as part of new safety measures announced by the hugely popular gaming platform.
They will also be able to block or report their children's friends, and the platform will provide more information about which games young users are playing.
The measures will only apply to children who are under the age of 13 and have parental controls set up on their accounts.
The announcements comes after the CEO of Roblox, Dave Baszucki told the BBC that parents should keep their children off the platform if they were "not comfortable" with it.
Roblox - the most popular site in the UK for gamers aged eight to 12 - has been dogged by claims that some children are being exposed to explicit or harmful content through its games.
However, in his BBC interview, Mr Baszucki stressed that the company was vigilant about protecting its users, with "tens of millions" of people having "amazing" experiences on Roblox.
Announcing the latest safety features, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said: "These tools, features, and innovations reflect our mission to make Roblox the safest and most civil online platform in the world."
A spokesperson for the regulator, Ofcom, said the measures were "encouraging", but added "tech companies will have to do a lot more in the coming months to protect children online".

In preparation for the interview with Mr Baszucki, the BBC found a range of game titles with troubling titles that had been recommended to an 11-year-old on the platform.
They included games such as "Late Night Boys And Girls Club RP" and "Shoot down planes…because why not?"
Parents with linked accounts of children who are 12 and under can now block such titles if they are uncomfortable with them.
They will also be able to go further in managing who their children are friends with.
They can already view their child's friends list - now they can block or report people on that list, preventing them exchanging direct messages.
Messaging between children had already been restricted in measures announced in November last year.
Additionally, parents will now be able to see the top games their child played on Roblox over the last week and how long they spent in each one.
Sally, from the north of Scotland, told the BBC last month that her nine-year-old daughter was groomed on the platform in December last year. Despite reporting it to Roblox, she never received a response.
She welcomed the announcements as a "start", but said Roblox "needs to do better".
She added: "What's missing is proper authentication of users. How does the company know that users are who they say they are - how will perpetrators be traced when grooming keeps happening?"
Roblox highlighted to BBC News its community standards, which have a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors.
Amir from Leeds told the BBC last month that his 15-year-old son is "addicted" to Roblox, and can use the site for up to 14 hours a day.
He has welcomed the changes announced today for younger users, but wants the platform itself to do more and target the availability of inappropriate games for children.
Kathryn Foley's nine-year-old daughter Helene is a regular on Roblox. Kathryn ensures her daughter avoids games where other players would talk to her, or friend requests.
Ms Foley told BBC News: "I know I will absolutely be using the game blocking feature, and to see how long my daughter spends on particular games - and also if she is playing games I didn't know she played."
Kirsty Solman has spoken with the BBC about how Roblox has helped her 13-year-old son Kyle - who has ADHD, autism and severe anxiety - with social interactions.
She said: "These all sound fantastic especially the experience blocking, as a concern is the type of games our children are accessing."
Roblox has also announced the expansion of its voice safety AI (artificial intelligence) model, to help moderate voice chats between players, with the feature now available in seven additional languages.
Meanwhile, Roblox has outlined changes to its advertising model, with players to be paid in-game currency to watch adverts on the platform.
The BBC has changed some names in this report to protect the identities of young people.

Race Across the World has crowned its winners, with Caroline and Tom beating sisters Letitia and Elizabeth by just 19 minutes. The mum, 61, and son, 21, threw their arms around each other as they became the first to make it to the finish line in Kanniyakumari in India, after travelling over 14,000km through China, India and Nepal on a budget of around £1,000 a person. Brothers Melvyn and Brian were the last to set off from the previous checkpoint hotel, having arrived there last. They had previously vowed to pick up the pace, with Brian insisting: "We have moved from fourth to first before, and we will do it again." They decided "bombing it South" was the best strategy and they looked to be on track after a huge splurge when they splashed out £173.08 - almost 40% of the money they had left - on a taxi to get them as far along as possible. However, Caroline and Tom managed to secure onward travel faster and made it to the final checkpoint at Vattakottai Fort first after a tense boat race and a foot race. They looked nervous as they turned the page of the checkpoint book to see that nobody else had written in it yet. Gasping with excitement, they hugged, and Caroline, who has been candid about feeling as if she had no purpose beyond being a wife and mum, told her son: "I felt like such a failure to begin with. We must never doubt ourselves again - ever ever ever... Oh my God!" "It's a really good feeling," said Tom. "I am lost for words, I can't believe it." Roblox hands $6M in bonuses to CFO poached from Paramount

Departing Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra is set to receive $6 million in cash bonuses when he takes the top financial seat at immersive game platform Roblox, according to a Tuesday securities filing. Chopra is set to take Roblox's top finance seat on June 30, the San Mateo, Calif.-based game platform said. The bonuses that Chopra, 51, is set to receive from his new employer will be comprised of a $3 million cash signing bonus, which will vest and be paid throughout a three-year period, as well as a second, $3 million signing bonus, '1/36 of which will be earned for each month of completed service,' according to Roblox. His compensation will also include an annual base salary of $735,000. The New York-based media and entertainment conglomerate Paramount appointed Andrew Warren, currently serving as the strategic advisor to the Office of the CEO to the role of interim CFO upon Chopra's departure, Paramount said in a Monday press release. Chopra will from his role effective June 27 after a four-year tenure as Paramount's finance chief, the company said. The incoming finance chief will also receive an award of restricted stock units with a value of $28 million, according to the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Roblox has also earmarked $15,000 per month for temporary housing reimbursement through Aug. 31, 2026, with a maximum of $900,000 in relocation expenses for the new CFO, per the filing. As CFO for the Roblox platform, which enables users to both program and play games, Chopra will succeed Michael Guthrie, Roblox said in a Tuesday filing. Guthrie will remain to provide 'advisory transitional services' to Roblox for a one-month period, the company said. An alum large companies including Amazon and music streaming service Pandora, Chopra has served as Paramount Global's CFO beginning in August 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile. Prior to joining Paramount, he served as CFO, Amazon Devices and Services for the e-commerce company, and served as CFO and interim CEO for Pandora. He also held various executive roles during a 13-year career at TiVo. The CFO appointment comes as Roblox looks to entice new users to its platform, with the company reporting a surge in its daily active users (DAU) for its Q1 2025 ended Mar. 31. The company saw 97.8 million DAUs in the period, a 26% jump year-over-year, according to its earnings report published May 8. Roblox also reported just over $1 billion in revenue for its Q1, a 29% increase YoY, as well as a 31% YoY rise in bookings to reach $1.2 billion, according to its earning report. Despite its most recent growth, Roblox has struggled to reassure investors about its potential for profitability. The company reported a consolidated net loss of $216.3 million for its Q1 2025, after posting a full-year consolidated net loss for 2024 of just over $940 million, according to earnings reports. The company has also faced questions regarding the safety of its platform, especially regarding its use by children: last October, now-defunct shortseller Hindenburg Research published a report accusing the platform of both inflating its user numbers and of being a 'pedophile hellscape for kids.' Questions about the platform's safety have repeatedly surfaced among both parents and other users, with digital behavior researchers Revealing Reality reporting the current safety measures employed by the platform remained 'limited in their effectiveness,' The Guardian reported in April. At Paramount, the CFO switch comes as the entertainment platform is seeking to navigate its own set of challenges after reconstituting its executive leadership last April — now led by a triumvirate of top executives in the Office of the CEO, including George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins. Chopra's departure comes as Paramount is reportedly gearing up to lay off about 3.5% of its workforce, CNBC reported Tuesday, citing a company memo. Last year Paramount moved to cut about 15% of its workforce in a three-phase plan, as part of a strategy to reduce its annual costs by $500 million, CNBC reported at the time. The cost-cutting moves also come as Paramount still seeks approval for its stalled $8 billion merger with Skydance, which has also been grappling with President Donald Trump's ongoing $20 billion lawsuit against 60 Minutes. Roblox and Paramount declined to comment beyond its press release. King Charles' birthday isn't until November. So why is it being celebrated in June?
Trooping the Colour 2025 will take place in London on Saturday. The annual military parade serves as King Charles III's official birthday celebration. The royal family gathers on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as part of the event. King Charles III was born on November 14, 1948, which means two things: He is among the most famous Scorpios in the world, and you probably wouldn't expect him to be thinking about his birthday in June. But thousands will celebrate the king's birthday in the UK on Saturday at Trooping the Colour, one of the biggest royal events of the year. According to the royal family's website, Trooping the Colour, a massive parade that takes place in June, has been the British sovereign's official birthday celebration for over 260 years. The annual celebration occurs in June, regardless of when the reigning monarch's actual birthday is. The royal family's website says that June is the ideal time to host the parade because the chance of the weather being suitable for outdoor activities in London is high compared to other times of the year. According to History, King George II, who was born in October, was the first monarch to move his birthday pageantry to the summer, but he combined his official celebration with a summer military parade in 1748. The reigning monarch's actual birthday is still publicly acknowledged with a royal gun salute, but the sovereign typically celebrates privately otherwise. During Trooping the Colour, a parade of royals and military personnel travels from Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall in London. The royal family's website states that the parade includes over 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians, and 200 horses, and the royals typically ride on horseback or in carriages. The monarch can participate in the event from either carriage or horseback. According to the BBC, Queen Elizabeth II rode a horse during the parade until 1987. Once the parade reaches Whitehall, the monarch formally inspects the troops during the ceremony. Likewise, the chosen Regimental Colour, or flag, is carried through the ranks of participating soldiers before they march back to Buckingham Palace. Thousands of onlookers cheer on the participants as they process. According to an FOIA request to the Ministry of Defence, the 2021 Trooping the Colour cost 59,662 pounds, which would be about $81,000 today. That total includes stable costs, transportation, and fuel, among other fees, though it does not factor in the cost of the police presence required to keep the event safe for the royals and attendees. Trooping the Colour culminates in a flypast by RAF pilots over Buckingham Palace as the royal family watches from the balcony. Trooping the Colour marks one of the few times a year the royal family gathers in one place, so they are always heavily photographed when they appear on the balcony. The occasion offers a chance to see how royals interact with each other, with people analyzing shots of Princess Diana and Prince Harry in years past. Royal children often steal the show when they appear at Buckingham Palace for the event as well. Royals also use the occasion to send a message to the public since it draws so much public interest. For instance, the 2024 Trooping the Colour served as the backdrop for Kate Middleton to make her return to public duty after she announced she was undergoing treatment for cancer in March 2024. She rode to the event in a carriage with her children and waved from the Buckingham Palace balcony with the royal family. The Princess of Wales announced she was in remission in January. Likewise, King Charles appeared at the 2024 Trooping the Colour amid his ongoing weekly cancer treatments, though he rode in a carriage in the parade with Queen Camilla instead of on horseback as a result of his health. The Times reported the monarch will ride in a carriage again for the 2025 event, though Prince William, his heir, and his sister Princess Anne will ride on horseback through the parade.
