The Saudi consulate is working closely with Swiss authorities to complete all necessary procedures for repatriating the deceased's body/ Image: Lake Geneva Swimming Association A Saudi citizen has died after drowning in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, the Saudi Consulate General in Geneva confirmed on Sunday. The consulate issued an official statement saying it is closely coordinating with Swiss authorities to complete all necessary procedures for the repatriation of the body back to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. No further details have been released regarding the identity of the deceased or the specific circumstances surrounding the drowning. The consulate did not indicate whether the individual was accompanied, nor did it provide any information about the nature or status of an investigation. In its statement, posted to its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the consulate expressed 'sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy' to the grieving family. It emphasized that all consular staff are involved in supporting the family during this difficult time and working to ensure the body's safe and respectful return home. In a deeply emotional incident earlier in July, 2024, Dr. Abdullah Alanazi, a respected Saudi academic, drowned while attempting to save his two-year-old son in Brienz Lake, near the Giessbach Waterfalls in the Swiss Alps. Dr. Alanazi was on a family holiday when the incident occurred. While taking photographs by the scenic waterfalls, his son, Abdulaziz, reportedly slipped and fell into the water. In a desperate effort to rescue his child, Dr. Alanazi jumped in after him. Both were swept away by powerful currents as his wife and daughter looked on in horror. Rescue teams, including helicopters and boats, responded swiftly and conducted an intensive two-day search. Dr. Alanazi's body was eventually recovered. The search for young Abdulaziz remains ongoing. Dr. Alanazi was the head of the research unit at the College of Applied Medical Sciences in Riyadh and was widely respected in his field. Although unrelated, both incidents have brought renewed attention to water safety among travelers visiting Switzerland. Alpine lakes, rivers, and waterfalls can appear calm but often conceal dangerous conditions like slippery rocks, sudden drops, and fast-moving water.

Kulgam encounter enters Day 4 as security forces battle terrorists in dense forests

Srinagar, Aug 4 (UNI) The anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district entered its fourth day today, with intermittent exchanges of fire and explosions continuing through the night in the dense Akhal Khulsan forest area. So far, two terrorists have been killed, and three soldiers injured in the ongoing operation. Officials said one of the slain terrorists is believed to be a local. The encounter which began on August 1 evening after security forces received credible intelligence inputs about the presence of four to five terrorists in the Akhal forest belt. The operation triggered a fierce exchange of fire, which has continued with varying intensity over the past 72 hours. The operation is being carried out jointly by the Army's elite Special Forces, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police, with support from Rudra attack helicopters and surveillance drones, relentlessly combing the area to flush out the hiding militants. The dense and rugged terrain has made the search effort especially challenging, officials said. The area remains under a tight cordon to prevent the remaining militants from escaping. Senior security officials are on the ground, closely monitoring the situation. "When the operation was launched on Friday, initial contact was established, leading to a fierce gunfight. While two terrorists have been neutralized, more are still holed up in the area," a security official said. This is the second major encounter in Kashmir within a week. On July 28 security forces eliminated three Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in an encounter in the Harwan-Dachigam forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar. A day later Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament that the three terrorists were responsible for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, where 25 tourists and a local pony rider were killed .
