Tengku Zafrul: Government steps up coordination with states to cushion US tariff impact
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government's establishment of the National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC) would play a key role in monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating responses to shifts in the global trade landscape, including tariff shocks and non-tariff barriers.
'This effort aims to ensure that the country's strategic and economic industries remain resilient and competitive in an increasingly challenging and uncertain global environment,' he said in the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a question from Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok).
Mohd Syahir enquired about the government's steps to address the US tariff issue with the involvement of state governments to coordinate investment responses, restructure state incentives, and help local industries adapt to a more challenging trade environment.
Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul said that on May 5, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim convened a Special Parliament Session on US retaliatory tariffs, during which several incentives were announced to support the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector.
Among these, the government has allocated RM20 million to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation to help SMEs penetrate new markets.
'The easy financing fund has also been increased by RM500 million through development financial institutions (DFIs) for the benefit of affected SMEs,' said Tengku Zafrul.
Additionally, the government has raised its guarantee facility under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme (SJPP) by RM1 billion, specifically to assist SME exporters in obtaining loans.
The Ministry of Finance has also spearheaded the Government-linked Enterprises Activation and Reform Programme (GEAR-uP) with funds totalling RM25 billion to drive high-growth and high-value sectors.
Tengku Zafrul noted that since US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of retaliatory tariffs on Malaysia and other trading partners on April 1, 2025, the government has made a strategic decision not to respond with retaliatory measures, opting instead to negotiate with the US administration.
The Prime Minister has assured that in pursuing a reciprocal trade agreement, the government will not compromise on matters related to national sovereignty.
'Although we are proactive, firm, and open in our negotiations with the US, we have several 'red lines' that were recently agreed upon by the new Cabinet,' he said.
These include the Bumiputera policy on ownership of local industries and strategic sectors, priority for local and Bumiputera companies in government procurement, adherence to halal guidelines recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), and the protection of intellectual property rights.
'We will continue to engage with the US in a careful, transparent, and professional manner to ensure that every decision made benefits the people and supports balanced economic development,' added Tengku Zafrul. — Bernama

Global passenger demand grows 2.6% in June 2025, says IATA
KUALA LUMPUR: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a 2.6 per cent increase in global passenger demand for June 2025, marking a slower growth rate compared to previous months. Mais welcomes SIS Forum (Malaysia)'s move to drop ‘Islam' from name
SHAH ALAM, Aug 1 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has welcomed the decision by SIS Forum (Malaysia) to drop the word 'Islam' from the name 'Sisters In Islam', which the non-profit organisation had previously used. Mais chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin described the move as appropriate and a reflection of the organisation's willingness to respect the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is the Head of Islam in the state. Following the decision, Mais has advised all parties to refrain from using the name 'Sisters In Islam' when referring to the organisation in any future statements or publications. Salehuddin said the Sultan had also reminded SIS Forum (Malaysia), along with other companies, organisations and entities, to respect the position of Islam as the religion of the federation and the state, and to consult state religious authorities on matters relating to Islam. 'His Royal Highness also advised SIS Forum (Malaysia) and all parties to exercise greater caution when issuing statements or publications related to Islam. 'This is to ensure that any message conveyed to the public does not conflict with the true teachings of Islam, in accordance with the beliefs and practices of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that the Sultan, through Mais, had expressed hope that SIS Forum (Malaysia) would continue its efforts to raise awareness on women's rights and Islamic family law in accordance with authentic Islamic teachings. 'As an organisation with influence in society, SIS Forum (Malaysia) should also focus on fostering unity among the community in support of national harmony,' he said. Miti in talks with firm over Malaysia's Osaka Expo 2025 Pavilion design dispute, says Tengku Zafrul
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The appointment and involvement of all stakeholders including consultants, contractors and service providers for the development of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan has gone through a prescribed evaluation and selection process, in line with the government's procurement procedures in force. Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the ministry had completed the internal investigation process regarding allegations that Miti had used the work of a private company in designing the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka without providing any recognition or payment. To ensure that this matter can be resolved amicably between both parties, the ministry is holding active discussions with the company. 'This is important to ensure that Malaysia's participation in Expo 2025 Osaka is not affected, and that the momentum for achievements so far can be maintained and all the goals of Malaysia's participation in the expo are achieved,' he said in reply to Lim Lip Eng's (PH-Kepong) request in Dewan Rakyat yesterday to state the status of the investigation into the allegations and the government's steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur in any government agency. Taking lessons from this issue, Tengku Zafrul said Miti would continue to streamline internal guidelines based on needs, especially in enhancing control over all aspects of selecting implementing partners, especially for high-impact projects involving the country's image at the international level.
