Jason Isaacs Says Backlash to Paapa Essiedu's ‘Harry Potter' Casting Is ‘Racist'

Yahoo2 days ago
Original 'Harry Potter' star Jason Isaacs is standing by franchise addition Paapa Essiedu. Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the film franchise, told Collider that Essiedu is enduring 'racist' backlash after being announced as Severus Snape for the HBO reboot series. Late actor Alan Rickman starred as Snape in the films.
'Paapa Essiedu is one of the best actors I've ever seen in my life. I've seen some people online who are being rude about him. What they're being is racist,' Isaacs said. 'All the cast of the new 'Harry Potter' TV series are amazing. They will be swallowing their tongues, hopefully — you know, their digital tongues — when they see what [Paapa] does onscreen.'

Essiedu is an Emmy-nominated actor for 'I May Destroy You.' He also starred in 'Men,' among other projects. Essiedu has previously spoken out about being called racial slurs while at the prestigious British drama academy Guildhall School. The actor also has voiced his support for the trans community, which is directly at odds with the beliefs of 'Harry Potter' creator and series producer JK Rowling, who is now widely known for her anti-trans views.
Rowling wrote on X that she doesn't 'have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did,' while sharing an article about Essiedu. 'I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.'
Meanwhile, Essiedu isn't the only reboot star that Isaacs is already praising: Isaacs applauded the casting decision to have Johnny Flynn play the new Lucius Malfoy in the series. Flynn and Isaacs co-starred in 2021's 'Operation Mincemeat' together.
'A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too,' Isaacs wrote on X about Flynn. 'Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing…'
'Harry Potter' will also star John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Bel Powley, Janet McTeer, and more. Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, Arabella Stanton, and are playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The series is set to air in 2026.

Black Sabbath Founding Member Tony Iommi Gives the Final Word on the Possibility of Future Shows

Tony Iommi says Black Sabbath's Back to the Beginning concert will absolutely be the end. The legendary guitarist, who will reunite with bandmates Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward at Birmingham's Villa Park on July 5 for their first live performance in 20 years, told BBC Midlands Today that there is no possibility that the iconic rock band will ever play together in the future. "We're never going to do this again, this will be it," Iommi, 77, confirmed. 'We're all nervous really,' the rocker admitted of the band's highly publicized final show. "This is totally different from anything else we've done, you know we've played for 300,000 people, but this is nerve-wracking." "People are coming from all over the world, and I just can't absorb it,' Iommi added. 'It's been tough, because none of us are getting younger, and to stand there for a couple of hours is tiring.' Iommi previously told Music Week he was worried about how the band's final show would go amid lead singer Ozzy Osbourne's struggles with Parkinson's disease. "The worrying thing for me is the unknown,' he said in the interview, per Louder. 'We don't know what's going to happen. …It's a nerve-wracking thing, as we'll be touching on some stuff that we haven't done for a long time,' he added. Iommi also explained that the band only agreed to reunite for the Back to the Beginning concert because it would be a charity show. "It's absolutely the end,' he said of Black Sabbath, which he formed in 1968 with Osbourne, Butler, and Ward. 'There's no way we could go out and do a tour.' Iommi's confirmation comes after longtime Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde expressed hope that Black Sabbath could tour again in the future with some accommodations for the singer's illness. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Wylde predicted that concert promoters will be all over the Back to the Beginning gig. 'I'm sure the promoters are going to go, 'Wow, that was pretty amazing. Let's do another world tour right now,'' Wylde, 58, predicted. 'If they do this Sabbath thing and it sounds amazing, and Ozzy sings great, and the band sounds amazing, and the only difference is Oz is just sitting down [on a throne]…Why not, right? You know every promoter's just got their fingers crossed on this one."Black Sabbath Founding Member Tony Iommi Gives the Final Word on the Possibility of Future Shows first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 5, 2025

Tom Holland Teases Which Former 'Spider-Man' Film Embodies the New Movie originally appeared on Parade. Tom Holland is pumping up fans ahead of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day release and revealed which of the franchise's movies the new project is similar to. 'I'm obviously over the moon and so excited,' Tom, 29, told Variety in a story published on Monday, July 14. 'Playing Spider-Man is like hanging out with an old pal, and I think we were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID. We shot the entire film on stages.' Now that there are no restrictions on travel, the English actor shared that they are 'gonna lean into that old school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we're starting in Glasgow.' Tom seemingly teased that there may be an epic fight scene in the Scotland-based city, noting, 'We are gonna use the streets of Glasgow for this massive set piece that we are putting together.' After gushing over the filmmaking process, Tom shared that Spider-Man 4 will feel like 'making [Spider-Man: Homecoming] again.' 'It's been such a long time that I've done it that it's gonna feel like a breath of fresh air,' he continued. 'I think the fans are going to be over the moon with what we're putting together.' Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release on July 31, 2026. While the Marvel film's plot details have remained in the vault, fans can get hyped with the cast. Audience members are expecting Zendaya to reprise her role as MJ and Jacob Batalon to return as Ned, although no official announcement has been made. However, the cast allegedly gained a major player as Deadline previously reported that Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink is making her Marvel debut in the movie. 'No. I see a lot of rumors too. They've been really cool to read,' Sadie, 23, told Deadline in May. 'I love the Marvel Universe. I mean they're awesome rumors.' Stunning moment captured on camera as Lleyton and wife rub shoulders with royals

New footage has emerged of Lleyton Hewitt and wife Bec's reaction to a stunning rally in the Wimbledon men's final as they brushed shoulders with the royal family. Lleyton and Bec were invited to sit in the royal box for Sunday's final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz - won by World No.1 Sinner. Retired tennis players Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Chris Evert were all in the royal box, and received their invites as former champions. Hewitt won the title at the All England Club in 2002, while Agassi was crowned champion in 1992. Evert won the prestigious title in 1974, 1976 and 1981. Lleyton and Bec were in London supporting son Cruz, who took part in the junior boys tournament. The 16-year-old Cruz is forging a tennis career of his own, and hoping to follow in the footsteps of his famous father. Cruz enjoyed a straight-sets victory in the opening round of the junior event, but his campaign was ended in the second round. The teenager was spotted in a number of fiery moments directed at father Lleyton as the match slipped away from him. On Sunday, Lleyton was back at the All England Club rubbing shoulders with royalty. The Hewitts were seated directly behind Kate Middleton, and were spotted chatting to the Princess of Wales on numerous occasions. Prince William was also in the front row of the royal box, as were children Charlotte and George. Lleyton and Bec were given top billing in the royal box, and seated in front of other celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Anna Wintour. And there was a moment in the match where they were all blown away. The Spanish World No.2 appeared destined to lose the rally, before he produced a wonderful backhand slice that Sinner couldn't get to. The majority of the royal box were on the edge of their seats throughout, before William and Kate were both left with their mouths agape. Bec threw her hands to her face in amazement, while Lleyton was just about the only person in the crowd not to show some sort of disbelief. The Aussie legend clapped the players after the extraordinary rally, but after such an illustrious career it's probably hard to see something that stuns you. In complete contrast, former American player Justin Gimelstob was left completely gobsmacked. A former ATP director, Gimelstob was there as a guest of Agassi. How the Royal Box reacted to THAT Carlos set point 👀#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 14, 2025 Sinner went on to win the match 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4, becoming the first Italian to win Wimbledon. His fourth grand slam singles title came after he copped a controversial three-month ban earlier this year for inadvertently ingesting a banned substance. The three-month suspension came at an ideal time for Sinner, who wasn't forced to miss any grand slam tournaments and managed to retain the World No.1 ranking.
