IGMC faces dry taps as Shimla's water supply collapses

North Shimla, Aug 14 (UNI) The Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and other hospitals in Shimla are bracing for severe water shortage after heavy rain, flash floods, and rising turbidity crippled all major pumping stations supplying the city. Authorities have warned that IGMC could run dry as total water intake on Thursday plummeted to just 3.76 MLD against the normal 22 MLD. Hospital administrations have issued orders to halt washing activities, use stored water only for drinking, and rely on rainwater for hygiene purposes. 'We do not maintain separate storage, and supply is made directly to maintain pressure in all distribution tanks. With negligible intake today, Shimla will not get water,' said Sahil Sharma, spokesperson for Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL). The crisis has also hit around 192 other water schemes across Himachal Pradesh, with estimated damage to water infrastructure pegged at Rs 600–700 crore. Israeli PM Netanyahu outlines 5 principles for ending Gaza war

Tel Aviv, Aug 14 (UNI) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today outlined five principles set by the Cabinet for ending the Gaza war and said their implementation will ensure Israel's security and victory in the war. In a statement, Netanyahu said: "One week ago, I convened the Security Cabinet and we determined five principles for the conclusion of the war: 1. Hamas is to be disarmed. 2. All hostages - the living and the deceased - are to be returned. We will not give up on a single one. 3. The Strip is to be demilitarized. Not only must Hamas be disarmed, but it must be ensured that weapons will be neither produced in the Strip nor smuggled into the Strip. 4. There will be Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip, including the security perimeter. 5. There will be an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority - people who will neither educate their children for terrorism, nor finance terrorism, nor dispatch terrorism. "These five principles will ensure the security of Israel. This is the meaning of the word 'victory'," he said. The Israeli PM's statement comes a day after he said that he believes the prospects for a partial ceasefire and hostage-release deal with Hamas are no longer possible. In an interview with Israeli broadcaster i24, Netanyahu said the possibility of reaching a partial agreement is behind us. He rejected accusations from opposition figures and former senior military officials that he was dragging his feet in the war, saying the goal remains to end the conflict, defeat Hamas and secure the release of all hostages as part of a single final agreement on our terms. On Sunday, Netanyahu said Israel plans to extend its military campaign beyond Gaza City into the last areas outside its control, where most of the enclave's roughly two million residents have taken refuge amid worsening humanitarian conditions. Trump compares meeting with Putin to ‘chess game', admits '25 pc' chance of failure

Washington, Aug 14 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has said the Friday summit with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska could pave the way for a second round of talks — potentially involving Ukrainian Prez Volodymyr Zelensky — though there is admittedly a '25% chance that this meeting will not be successful". Speaking to Fox Radio, Trump compared the encounter to 'a chess game,' suggesting that any settlement between Moscow and Kyiv would inevitably be give and take' situation, when concerning the boundaries between the two nations, reports BBC. 'This meeting sets up the second meeting. The second meeting is going to be very, very important, because that's going to be a meeting where they make a deal,' Trump said. The statement comes amid Zelensky's refusal to accept any territorial swap, stating that Ukraine 'will not give land to the occupier' and warnings that surrendering the eastern Donbas region would lead to 'another war', destabilising the region further. US officials have said a plan floated by Putin to halt the war includes substantial territorial concessions by Kyiv — a proposal Zelensky has publicly rejected. Earlier, commenting on the meeting, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump will exhaust all options "to try and bring this war to a peaceful resolution", and that the discussions between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will consist of a one-on-one meeting, a bilateral lunch with both delegations, and a news conference. "What comes after that meeting is up to President Trump," she said, adding that the POTUS has 'plenty of tools at his disposal,' but would rather end this diplomatically. "There are sanctions and many other measures that the President can use if he has to." Trump has also expressed openness to hitting Russia with additional sanctions if the meeting doesn't end well, though he believes Putin will agree to a deal. 'I believe now he's convinced that he's going to make a deal. He's going to make a deal. I think he's going to. And we're going to find out — I'm going to know very quickly,' He offered an ultimatum to the situation, saying 'If it's a bad meeting, I'm not calling anybody — I'm going home. … But if it's a good meeting, I'm going to call President Zelensky and the European leaders.'
