Shocking moment Barcelona's Inigo Martinez appears to SPIT on Inter Milan rival Francesco Acerbi during heated Champions League clash - and VAR cleared it

Daily Mail06-05-2025
An on-pitch fight just before half-time during Inter Milan 's thrilling Champions League triumph over visitors Barcelona appeared to have been sparked by Inigo Martinez spitting on Francesco Acerbi.
The hosts returned to the San Siro after a breathless first-leg on the road left the tie level at 3-3 going into the decider on Tuesday evening.
It took very little time for Inter to assert their dominance, with Simone Inzaghi's side going ahead via a goal by Lautaro Martinez in the 21st minute.
Inter doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, with Hakan Calhanoglu stepping up to strike from the spot after he was brought down in the box minutes earlier by Pau Cubarsi.
But as viewers at home watched replayed footage of the penalty decision and Calhanoglu coolly slotting his effort past Wojciech Szczesny, when live action returned the players on the pitch were in disarray.
Members of both sides appeared to be in dispute with the referee Szymon Marciniak, with commentary describing the possibility of VAR intervening to give a red card.

While all 22 players stayed on the pitch, after full-time on the eventual 4-3 classic new footage came to light of Martinez seeming to spit at his rival after the penalty was awarded.
Pictures from the San Siro show Acerbi appealing to Marciniak, with a group of Barcelona players clustered around their team-mate.
Footage from the stadium appears even more damning, with Martinez allegedly spitting towards Acerbi as the Italian runs past him into the box.
Discussing the potential incident after the final whistle, Wayne Rooney on Amazon Prime stressed that if Martinez was found to have spat on his rival, UEFA would be quick to intervene.
'You certainly don't want to see that in a football game or anywhere,' the Manchester United legend said. 'If he has spat, then he'll get a punishment that he'll deserve.'
Co-pundit Daniel Sturridge added: 'Absolutely right. If he's done that, then it's not good - it's not necessary, it's not needed.
'We'll let the people do their job and see if he's actually done it.'
Acerbi, however, had the last laugh - despite no action being taken after the decision went to VAR.
Barcelona came out of the starting blocks quickly as play resumed after the break, with Eric Garcia scoring in the 54th minute, with the fightback well and truly restarted when Dani Olmo provided the equaliser just six minutes later.
Minutes before normal time, Raphina put Barcelona in the lead for the first time in the two-legged tie, their spot in the final all but sewn up.
But just three minutes into added time, Acerbi was laser-focused inside the box to score his first ever European goal at the age of 37.
Extra-time allowed Inter to find the winner through Davide Frattesi, with the Milanese side booking their second Champions League final in three years.

Jose Mourinho explains how his management style changed football

Jose Mourinho feels his way of working changed football and there is a clear distinction between before and after his emergence. The iconic boss first came to the world's attention when he won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, earning a move to the Premier League with Chelsea. In his first of two spells with the Blues he won the Premier League twice, before leaving for Inter Milan where he won two Serie A titles and the Champions League in 2010. A move to Real Madrid followed where he won La Liga in 2012 while competing against one of the great Barcelona sides. Since then he returned to Chelsea, moved to Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and now Fenerbahce. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. His reputation may have dimmed in recent years, but at the peak of his powers in the noughties he was a pioneering manager, considered one of the best in the world. The 62-year-old feels he was so pioneering that football management is different now to before he arrived at the top of the sport. 'It is complicated. Methodologically, I think there is a distinction between before me and after me,' Mourinho said, via Turkish site Fanatik. 'Methodologically, in terms of how you train, how you think about the game, in the early 2000s, until 2000 and 2004 when I won my first Champions League, there was a big explosion of interest in the way I worked and then there is clearly an after. 'I remember, for example, when I came to Italy to Inter, when I first went to Italy, even the players didn't really believe in that way of working. There was a radical change on a methodological level.' Mourinho's first season at Fenerbahce did not produce any silverware, but he rages against the idea that he is past his best. 'Many people say something that makes me laugh, 'Jose Mourinho is not what he used to be, he has lost his identity',' he said. 'It is better to lose identity and win. I think those who say that win less. So, those who win, who win more often, are the ones who are more impressive. Then there's something that makes me feel even better, and that's the way I win, where I win. I didn't win the Champions League, but I won the league title and the cup, I beat Barcelona, the best team in the world, and I broke a big cycle of Barcelona's dominance against Real Madrid. 'The last UEFA title I won with Roma, Roma's first and only European title, so the things I did, not only the number of titles I won, but the way I did them… I'm one of the best.' Mourinho will try and return to the Champions League with his Fenerbahce side when they take on Benfica in the play-offs, starting in Turkey on Wednesday night. Newcastle United hit back at Alexander Isak's social media statement

Newcastle United have rejected striker Alexander Isak 's claim that he was promised a summer exit, stating he remains under contract. Isak accused the club of 'broken promises' and declared 'trust is lost', asserting that a transfer is now in everyone's best interest. The club issued a strong statement denying any such commitment and indicated that the conditions for a sale, including a rejected £110m bid from Liverpool, would not be met. Isak has not featured for Newcastle in pre-season or their opening league match, reportedly due to a thigh injury, and is training separately. The dispute comes as Newcastle began the season without a recognised striker, having failed to secure other transfer targets.

Will 'bold and ambitious' spending pay off?

I think it is fair to say Sunderland have defied all expectations when it comes to their summer only in terms of the money spent but in the number of players fans instinctively knew Sunderland's squad from the Championship needed strengthening for the Premier League campaign. Five or six players with Premier League experience would conservatively have been a lot of people's estimation, but as to how much they would cost and whether that would be enough was always going to be the big question. No-one really knew how much owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus would be prepared to spend with his model of sustainability at the forefront of everything the club has done in his tenure. He and his team have blown everyone away with the money spent but also with the quality of the players signed. Granit Xhaka is the standout example, but he's not the only one. Habib Diarra, Omar Alderete, Noah Sadiki, Simon Adingra, the list goes defeat of West Ham, albeit only one game, suggested all these players are comfortable in their Premier League skin. The bonus was their three goals were scored by three players who came up with the team from the a bold and ambitious bid to stay up but Sunderland fans are certainly backing them to do so. How does it compare to other promoted clubs? According to transfermarkt,, external Sunderland now top the all-time list for amount spent by a promoted club in the Premier a summer spend of £142m so far, both them, and fellow promoted side Burnley - who have spent £109m - are hoping for a solid return on their far as the numbers go, the other four teams to have spent big upon their Premier League return have had mixed Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest narrowly avoided the drop after busy summer windows following promotion, but are now playing in last summer saw Southampton an Ipswich finish as the bottom two sides in the league.
