London:
All the chatter on the way to Lord's on Sunday morning was about the Wimbledon final to be played on the other side of the city. However, once inside, some exhilarating cricket took centre stage, with India calling the shots for most of the day before England threw some powerful punches in the last hour of the day to set the visitors back.
It was the Indian pacers who were sending down the hot serves straightaway. England struggled to return blows with the bat as they folded for 192 with an hour and half left in the day's play. However, the home pacers then produced their most threatening spell of the series to have India reeling at 58/4, still 135 runs away from taking the lead in the series, when stumps were drawn.
Tempers flared again on the fourth evening, with KL Rahul and night watchman Akash Deep repeating England's act of wasting time. Joe Root got into the act to egg the vociferous crowd on and the high-octane battle ended with England captain Ben Stokes uprooting Akash Deep's stumps. The pitch woke up from slumber and made for the toughest batting conditions so far in this series. Much of the credit for that can be cornered by
Jasprit Bumrah
and
Mohammed Siraj
's relentless attack on the England batters in the first hour of the day.

Bumrah softened the batters with balls that spit off the pitch and flew past the noses of English openers. Both openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like they were living on borrowed time. Bumrah and Siraj finished with figures of 2/38 and 2/31 respectively and laid down the template on how to bowl on the devious fourth-day pitch.
Washington Sundar
reaped the benefits of the pressure created by the early-morning burst. The off-spinner stayed true to his line and length by removing Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir in the last session to kill any chance of an England resurrection.

All four of his wickets were bowled. Seven English batters were dismissed bowled and one was LBW. India had successfully executed their plans.

In effect, Bumrah and Siraj turned back the clock to Lord's 2021. Their precision and relentlessness exerted immense pressure on the English openers. After 40 minutes of play, just as when one thought India were out of luck, Siraj got Ben Duckett out to a desperate shot.
It was high-octane cricket again after three days of slow burn.
The temperature was considerably lower after three days of hot weather. Siraj and Bumrah turned up the heat on English batters. Bumrah was plain unlucky to go wicketless from the Nursery End after bowling for an hour. But when Siraj removed Ollie Pope LBW, the floodgates opened.
All of captain
Shubman Gill
's plans worked. Nitish Kumar Reddy surprisingly bowled ahead of Akash Deep, and sent back Crawley, with Jaiswal at gully pulling off a stunning catch.

Just as Harry Brook was getting started with his counterattack, Akash Deep knocked his stumps over as he attempted a fine sweep. When Root and Stokes tried to regain control through measured and riskless batting, Washington found a way of hitting their stumps when they tried to break free with sweep shots.
Crawley's antics to delay proceedings last night may have spurred the Indian team on. They were not going to offer any respite.
They were in the ears of the England batters and barely moved away from the plan of attacking the stumps.
That Root and Stokes batted 22 overs to score 67 runs is testimony of India's impeccable discipline. England's most experienced batting pair could not find a way to put the pressure back on India's bowling. They were tied to the crease, playing for survival. Root was the highest scorer with the bat with 40 off 96. Stokes's grind of 33 off 96 ended with an ugly slog sweep off Washington. England got some breather with substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, keeping in England for the first time, conceding 25 byes.

Hitting back at India's provocation put some pressure on them, says vice-captain Brook

Tempers flared during England's 22-run win at Lord's with players from both sides engaging in verbal volleys. However, England batter Harry Brook stated that his team tried playing 'in the spirit of the game as much as possible' before the Indian players provoked them. 'Their lads went hard at Creeps [Zak Crawley] and Ducky [Ben Duckett] on that night when [Jasprit] Bumrah bowled that single over. We watched that and we re-assessed and we thought it was the right time to go (hit) back at them,' Brook said on Monday. 'I think it put them under a little bit more pressure. Obviously, [they were] chasing a low score but on a tough pitch. It might have given them that little bit of added pressure. Thankfully, they ended up crumbling, and we won the game.' In a low-scoring game, England managed to defend a 193-run target, and Brook revealed that he received several compliments for the memorable victory. 'I have had a lot of compliments. Everybody said it was awesome to watch, and it looked like there were 11 versus two out there when we were fielding. It was good fun. It was tiring, but it made fielding a lot more enjoyable,' he said.

Brook says on-field tensions with India have worked in England's favour

Manchester, Jul 21 (PTI) England batter Harry Brook believes that the on-field tensions with the Indian players in the ongoing Test series has helped his team more than the opposition. The Indian players were all over England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett towards close of play on day three at Lord's. The bowler in operation at that time, Jasprit Bumrah sarcastically clapped at Crawley who employed the delaying tactic just before stumps. Will there be more tension in the remaining two games? 'I've had a lot of compliments. Everybody said it was awesome to watch and it looked like there was 11 versus two when we were fielding. It was good fun, I have to admit, it was tiring but it made fielding a lot more enjoyable," said Brook on Monday ahead of the Manchester Test. Brook, however, insisted that the lines won't be crossed. 'Yeah, absolutely. We try to play in the spirit of the game as much as possible. Those lads went hard at Creeps and Ducky on that night when Bumrah bowled that single over. We watched that, we reassessed and we thought it was the right time to go back at them." That specific needling by India in the third Test at Lord's worked in England's favour, said Brook. 'Yeah, I think it put them under a little bit more pressure. Chasing a low score but on a tough pitch, it might have given them a little bit of added pressure and thankfully they ended up crumbling and we won the game," he said referring to the 22-run win at Lord's as India failed to chase 193 on a tricky pitch. Brook said he has been receiving messages on the highly competitive nature of the series which England lead 2-1 after three games which lasted five days. 'Every game we've played so far has gone into the last hour of the game, which you do not see very often. I've had a lot of people come up to me saying 'it's been an amazing series, thank you'. 'Everybody said that the Lord's game was one of the best games that they've watched, so it's been an amazing series and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. 11 v two on the pitch, that's how you get brought up to try and play cricket is work as a team, try and figure out how we're going to get them out. 'You don't always have to be nice. As we saw last week, we tried to create a bit of niggle. Who knows, that might have played into our favour or we just bowled well," said Brook. The destructive batter said it has been satisfying to win matches in different circumstances. 'We saw them set a ridiculous total for us at Edgbaston. They obviously were a little bit scared of setting us a total that we could potentially get. That played into our favour and gave us a lot of confidence as well going into other games going forward," he said. 'Chasing that total at Headingley was an unbelievable win as well. And then obviously the fight, the determination we showed to get that last wicket and the skills and patience that Stokesy showed as well throughout that period, where we couldn't quite find the wicket, was awesome to watch. I'm sure it kept everybody on the edge of their seats," Brook added.
