Cancel permits if autos charge more: Minister
Almost two weeks after public anguish over the exorbitant rise in auto fares following the ban on bike-taxi operations in the state, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy Saturday instructed the transport commissioner to take action against ride-hailing mobile apps and regular autos if they are found charging illegal fares. Instructions have been given to transport department officials to cancel auto permits and book cases for illegal fare charges.Interestingly, the direction came from the minister hours after #stepdowntransportminister was trending on social media platform X over the ban on bike taxis.
Ramalinga Reddy told TOI he himself has received complaints from the public over auto drivers and aggregators charging exorbitant fares. The letter addressed to the transport commissioner states that on June 18, 2025, the ride-hailing mobile app Rapido was charging ₹100.9 per km. 'This kind of daylight robbery is unpardonable and strict action should be taken,' the letter states.

as the reason for exorbitant fares being charged. 'A majority of auto drivers have attached their vehicles with ride-hailing apps. These apps, instead of following fare rules of the govt, are charging higher auto fares and other fees,' he said, adding: 'Enforcement staff will identify irregularities and take action. No auto drivers should collect more fare from passenger.'

On the trending hashtag, the minister said, 'We've acted against bike-taxi operations as per the high court order. On social media, people do make comments about the decision taken by authorities, I don't have much to say about that. Earlier, bike-taxi operations were illegally operated. It is to say that the state govt does not support illegal operations.'
Following the letter from the minister, transport commissioner Yogeesh AM told TOI that enforcement officials have been asked to act on the illegal collection of fares. 'When customers street hail an auto, the driver should charge the fare as fixed by the regional transport authority. Ride-hailing apps can charge a 10% service tax in addition to the fares fixed by RTA. Other fees and charges on customers are illegal.' As per the last revision in 2022, RTA has fixed Rs 30 for the first 2km and Rs 15 per km thereafter.

'If there is a complaint from passengers about overcharging, cancellation of the journey if the higher fare is not paid, immediate action should be taken and the permit of such autos should be cancelled and a case should be registered,' Reddy said in his letter to the Transport Commissioner, on June 28. 'For example: On June 18, 2025, Rapido Auto App charged Rs. 100.89 per km, while Auto O App charged Rs. 184.19 for a 4 km journey. This kind of daylight robbery from the public is unforgivable, strict action should be taken urgently.' There have been complaints from commuters about rising auto fares. The meter fare is fixed at Rs 30 for the first 1.9 km, and Rs 15 for every additional kilometre. The Minister noted that although the Transport Department had registered cases against auto drivers for refusing rides and demanding excess fares, complaints from the public continue to pour in. He has also attached copies of mobile phone screenshots shared by denizens, highlighting instances of overcharging and urged officials to take appropriate action. 'It has been directed to immediately formulate an effective action plan to protect the interest of the public and take stern action against the guilty auto drivers/owners,' added.

Bihar oppn deploys 56k agents for poll roll revision, despite protests
NEW DELHI: Despite their protests over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll, the state's opposition parties have already joined the exercise in full strength, deploying over 56,000 booth level agents (BLAs) to monitor every stage of the process. RJD has appointed 47,143 BLAs, making it second only to BJP that has positioned 51,964 BLAs in the field. Congress has appointed 8,586 BLAs, CPI(ML) (Liberation) 233, CPM 76, and BS. BJP allies JDU, Lok Janshakti Party and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party have appointed 27,931, 2,457 and 264 BLAs, respectively, taking the total deployment by NDA to 82,616 BLAs. EC sources told TOI on Sunday that all parties are in the process of appointing more BLAs for proper verification of electoral rolls. EC officials, despite facing criticism of SIR as an attempt at 'disenfranchisement', sought to make it clear Sunday that the poll body will strictly implement Article 326 during the exercise. It's a straight question (to the parties criticising SIR): Do you agree with Article 326 or not,' asked the functionary. EC has already advised all recognised political parties in Bihar to appoint their workers as BLAs in polling stations 'now rather than finding faults with the electoral rolls later', as per the senior EC functionary. Electoral registration officers (EROs) have started conducting orientation workshops for BLAs of all parties to explain the process and sensitise them about SIR. The BLA for a polling station will be associated with the booth level officer (BLO) during the revision period. Political parties would also be asked to give a list of BLAs to respective their EROs. Before house-to-house enumeration, a BLO will hold a meeting with BLAs appointed by political parties and brief them about the schedule and process of SIR. BLOs will go through the draft electoral roll with BLAs and identify corrections to be carried out. 'It is pertinent to mention that BLAs once appointed by a recognised political party will continue as BLA, unless their appointment is rescinded revoked by the political party concerned,' as per EC instructions on SIR in Bihar issued last week. EC has allowed BLAs to file applications in bulk, subject to the condition that a BLA would not submit more than 50 forms per day to a BLO before the draft roll publication, and 10 forms per day thereafter. BLAs will submit a list of application forms with an undertaking that he or she has personally verified the particulars of the application forms and is satisfied that they are correct.

Post Op Sindoor, India to fast-track launch of 52 defence surveillance satellites
NEW DELHI: With the need for 'deep' as well as 'persistent' surveillance of enemy territory being reinforced by Operation Sindoor , India plans to fast-track the launch of 52 dedicated satellites for the armed forces. It is also in the process of finalising a comprehensive military space doctrine. Phase 3 of Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) programme, which was approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security in Oct last year at a cost of Rs 26,968 crore, involves the construction and launch of 21 satellites by Isro and 31 by three private companies. The first of these satellites is to be launched by April next year, with all 52 to be deployed before 2029-end, as part of the project being spearheaded by Defence Space Agency (DSA) under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of defence ministry. 'Work is underway to compress these timelines to launch the satellites faster into the low earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit. The three private companies that have got the contracts have been told to speed up building of the satellites,' a source told TOI. China's military space programme has expanded from operating just 36 satellites in 2010 to over 1,000 by 2024, with 360 of them dedicated to ISR missions. At a seminar earlier this month, IDS chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit had stressed the need to extend India's 'surveillance envelope' while underlining the critical role of 'real-time situational awareness' in conflicts. 'We must detect, identify and track potential threats not when they approach our borders, but when they are still in their staging areas, airfields and bases, deep within an adversary's territory,' he said. China's creation of PLA Aerospace Force in April last year underlined its recognition of space as the 'ultimate high ground' in modern warfare. 'Their satellites have recently demonstrated sophisticated 'dogfighting' manoeuvres in LEO, practising tactics designed to track and potentially disable adversary space assets. They have evolved from a 'kill chain' to a 'kill mesh' — an integrated network that seamlessly interweaves ISR satellites with weapon systems,' Air Marshal Dixit said.
