Next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, tax burden to come down for MSMEs, PM Modi says

The government is set to target the next big phase of reforms under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime by Diwali, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day speech on Friday. Tax burden for smaller businesses and common people is going to be reduced as the government looks at reducing rates on daily-use items and removal of the 12 per cent slab. 'This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you…we have undertaken a big reform of GST over the last eight years. We reduced the burden of tax across the country…eight years later, time demands that we review it. We started the review through the formation of a high-powered committee, held discussions with states,' Modi said. 'We are coming with next generation GST reforms by this Diwali,' he said, adding that tax burden will be reduced significantly, and MSMEs will benefit greatly. Sources said multiple meetings of the GST Council, the overarching federal body with members from both the Centre as well as states, will be held in the run-up to Diwali since decisions involving rate reductions that could potentially result in revenue losses will need to be discussed threadbare. The last meeting was held in December 2024. The government is looking at reducing the multiplicity of rates as well as public welfare services such as health and life insurance. The proposal to do away with the 12 per cent slab would involve shifting some items to the lower 5 per cent slab, and some others to the higher 18 per cent slab. Though this would simplify the multiple rate structure, it is estimated to result in significant revenue losses of Rs 70,000-80,000 crore for the Centre and states combined, The Indian Express had reported last month. In its last meeting held in Jaisalmer in December 2024, the GST Council had held discussions on lowering rates on several items. However, it decided to defer a key decision to lower the tax rate on health and life insurance premiums. The potential revenue losses from the major tweaks in GST rates are likely to be met by resistance from states as it may strain their fiscal health. This rate rationalisation proposal has been unpalatable to many states, both BJP-ruled and Opposition, as several attempts to simplify or reduce rates on consumer-focused items were stalled earlier in the GST Council. To build consensus and resolve contentious outstanding issues, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is learnt to have initiated discussions with all stakeholders — states as well as Central ministries, The Indian Express had reported last month. GST, the biggest indirect tax reform in recent years, was introduced in July 2017. But it is riddled with a multiplicity of rates — zero, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent, in addition to the cess rates for luxury and sin goods, and special carve outs for precious metals. The GST rate rationalisation has been talked about for over four years now. In its 45th meeting held in September 2021 in Lucknow, the GST Council discussed the need to undertake rate rationalisation including correction of inverted duty structure, to reduce classification related disputes, and enhance GST revenues. The Council then approved changes in GST rates to correct inverted duty structure in many sectors, including textiles and footwear that were brought into effect from January 2022.

CMF Buds 2 review: Stylish budget earbuds with clear audio, long battery

Launched a few months ago and now available for Rs 2,699, the CMF Buds 2 promise style, comfort, and clear sound, featuring 11mm drivers, audio tuned by Dirac Opteo, and Spatial Audio support. While they impress in design and everyday use, their noise cancellation and transparency leave room for improvement. Design and fit The CMF Buds 2 stick to the brand's minimalist aesthetic, featuring a squared-off case with a smooth matte finish and a transparent corner dial that serves as a tactile design element. The case is compact and lightweight, with a USB Type-C charging port on the right and a front LED indicator for battery status. Available in Dark Grey, Light Green, and Orange, the Light Green variant is visually striking but prone to showing dust. The earbuds combine a matte-textured stem with a glossy upper section and offer a secure, comfortable fit, though the plastic build feels less premium compared to the Buds 2 Plus. Software and controls Controlled through the Nothing X app, the CMF Buds 2 offer multiple equaliser presets, including Dirac Opteo, which delivers the clearest and most balanced output. Noise cancellation modes include Low, Mid, High, and Adaptive, along with transparency and no-ANC modes. An Ultra Bass mode with five intensity levels and a fixed Spatial Audio mode are also present, though both deliver limited impact in practice. Touch controls can be customised, but volume adjustment remains tied to tap-and-hold gestures. Noise cancellation and transparency The Buds 2 claim up to 48dB noise cancellation, which works reasonably well for muting background sounds in offices or during commutes. However, they fall short in loud environments, letting through conversations and traffic noise. Compared to the Buds 2 Plus, noise isolation feels notably weaker. Transparency mode also underperforms, letting in only faint ambient noise, which becomes almost inaudible when music or video is playing. Microphone performance is solid, with clear and consistent voice capture during calls. Connectivity The CMF Buds 2 feature in-ear detection, dual-device pairing, and quick, reliable reconnections after initial setup. Switching between devices is seamless. Battery life Battery performance is a highlight, easily lasting a full day of mixed use. Nothing claims 4 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge, which testing confirms. With ANC off, they can deliver up to 13.5 hours of continuous playback. Verdict The CMF Buds 2 excel in style, comfort, connectivity, and battery life, making them an easy choice for budget-conscious buyers. However, those prioritising strong noise cancellation or effective transparency may want to look elsewhere. For everyday use, they strike a good balance of design and sound at an attractive price.

"Made-In-India Semiconductor Chip To Come In Market By This Year End": PM

New Delhi: First made-in-India semiconductor chip will be launched in the market by the end of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday. Addressing the nation on the 79th Independence Day, PM Modi said that six semiconductor units are already on ground and four new units have been given green signal. "By the end of this year, made in India, made by the people of India, made in India chips will come to the market," PM Modi said. Semiconductors, key components for any electronic device, have diverse applications ranging from mobile phones and computers to home appliance and electric vehicles. The prime minister said that the thought process for semiconductors in the country started 50-60 years ago but it got stuck in the files while several countries have mastered it and are dominating the world. "My dear youth, you will be surprised to know that today, the semiconductor, which has become the strength of the world, 50-60 years ago, that thought process, those files, got stuck. They got stuck. The thought process of the semiconductor itself was foeticide 50-60 years ago. It lost 50-60 years. After us, many countries, in semiconductors, today, have mastered the technology and consolidated their power," PM Modi said. The PM said that he is not at the Red Fort to criticise any government but it is equally important for youth to know about it. He said that the country has now freed itself from the burden of the past and is moving forward in the area of semiconductors in a mission mode. The first known attempt to set up a semiconductor plant in India was made by American physicist and entrepreneur Robert Noyce in late 1960s before he co-founded Intel with Gordon Moore. India's semiconductor market is expected to more than double to grow in the range of USD 100-110 billion by 2030, according to industry estimates, an official statement said on Sunday. The Indian semiconductor market was about USD 45-50 billion in 2024-2025 against USD 38 billion in 2023, according to an official statement which cited industry estimates. The Union Cabinet this week approved four semiconductor plants, including a unit backed by US technology major Intel and Lockheed Martin, entailing a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore in three states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. The Cabinet approved a 3D glass semiconductor packaging unit to be set up by 3D Glass Solutions Inc -- which is backed by US technology majors such as Intel, Lockheed Martin and Applied Materials, entailing an investment of Rs 1,943 crore with an annual production capacity of 5 crore units. This is the first semiconductor project that involves personal computer chip maker Intel Corporation along with other technology partners. The Cabinet approved the country's first commercial compound fabrication unit by SiCsem for making silicon carbide semiconductors. The plant will be set up in Bhubaneswar with an investment of Rs 2,066 crore with capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. A chip packaging plant in Andhra Pradesh, to be set up by Advanced System in Package Technologies with an investment of Rs 468 crore, was also approved by the Cabinet. It will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. The Cabinet also cleared a semiconductor project of electronics component maker firm CDIL. The facility will be set up in Punjab with an investment of Rs 117 crore, having an annual production capacity of 15.8 crore units. The new semiconductor projects raise the total number of chip plants in India to 10 with cumulative investment commitment of around Rs 1.6 lakh crore. The chip plants that are setting up factories in advance stages include semiconductor wafer manufacturing units by Tata Electronics (TEPL) in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) of Taiwan with a proposed investment of around Rs 91,000 crore. The other five plants are into the field of chip packaging, which include a unit by US memory chip maker Micron Technology with Rs 22,516 crore investment, one by CG Power & Industrial Pvt Ltd in partnership with Renesas & Stars with Rs 7,600 crore investment, a Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) plant worth Rs 27,000 crore, a Kaynes Semicon unit of Rs 3,307 crore and a unit of HCL-Foxconn JV entailing an investment of Rs 3,700 crore.
