KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): A 100-megawatt interim gas power plant in Kimanis is expected to be completed this October.
Dynac JV Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Wira Ir. Md Sidek Ahmad stated that the nearly RM1 billion project will strengthen Sabah's electricity supply and benefit the entire state.
'The development of the Kimanis energy project is one of the initiatives to help improve or rehabilitate the electricity situation, particularly in Sabah.
'The project implementation was awarded to Dynac JV Sdn Bhd in September last year, with commissioning and project execution anticipated to begin this October.
'We hope to play a significant role in developing energy projects to meet Sabah's growing demands,' he told the media after a courtesy call on the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday.
He added that the visit aimed to brief Tun Musa on the project's progress, which will add 100 megawatts to the state's electricity grid, thereby enhancing long-term capacity and supply stability.
Accompanied by his Chief Operating Officer, Sharizal Md Sidek, he also highlighted that the project creates opportunities and develops local workforce capacity.
'We are also focused on hiring local workers, particularly university-graduate engineers in Sabah,' he added.
Tun Musa also received a courtesy call from Angkatan Hebat Sdn Bhd. Chairman of the vehicle rental company, Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Rahim Ismail, informed the Governor that Angkatan Hebat aims to increase its fleet by 400 units over a three-year period starting this year.
Abdul Rahim stated that the company has recorded continuous profits over the past four years and is now in a strong financial position.
'Although the company previously faced financial challenges, it has now successfully recovered. Last year, the company recorded a post-tax profit of RM9 million, and this year we are targeting a profit of around RM7 million.
'I am confident this positive progress will further strengthen the company's position and benefit the local economy and community.
'Angkatan Hebat currently owns 600 vehicles and aims to increase this to 1,000 units within the next two to three years.
'This effort is expected to be achieved with purchase support from several government departments and approval from the Ministry of Finance,' he said.
He also informed that the company, which manages the vehicle fleet for the Sabah State Government, actively implements corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by channeling aid to suraus, churches, schools, tahfiz centers, and other community groups through special allocations managed by the administration.
Also present were Deputy Chairman Datuk Dr Stephen Jacob Jimbangan, Chief Executive Officer Faez Ainstein Nordin, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Kwan Yeen Yee.
The Sabah Indian Association (SIA) also called on Tun Musa.
Its president, Didar Singh, said the association remains committed to advancing education and providing facilities for the younger generation in the state, regardless of ethnic background.
He stated that these initiatives include providing internet access at the association's building, developing new facilities, and organizing various activities for youth engagement.
'We want the available space at SIA to be utilized for educational and learning activities so that young people can thrive,' he said.
The visit aimed to strengthen the association's rapport and introduce SIA's new leadership to Tun Musa.
Beyond educational contributions, SIA which has over 1,000 members including professionals, also organizes community programs such as goodwill dinners, blood donation campaigns, and encourages new membership registrations.

‘Johor farmers have to pay more for foreign help'

VEGETABLE farmers in Johor are left without much choice but to pay foreign workers above Malaysia's minimum wage scale of RM1,700 a month. Federation of Vegetable Farmers Association president Lim Ser Kwee said foreign workers were only willing to work at farms if they were paid more. 'We have to pay them not less than RM2,000 or else we would have no helpers at our farms,'' he said when contacted. 'If a farmer chooses not to pay above the RM1,700 minimum wage rate, others might pay more to hire these workers,' he added. Lim said that despite farmers' willingness to exceed the minimum wage, locals did not want to do such work. 'Toiling under the sun at vegetable farms is not for locals.' The Federal Government announced an increase in the minimum wage from RM1,500 to RM1,700 effective Feb 1, 2025. This applies to all private sector employees including non-citizens, except for domestic workers and those under apprenticeship contracts. However, for smaller businesses with fewer than five employees, the new rate takes effect beginning this month. Lim said Malaysia's traditional vegetable farming relied heavily on manual labour, particularly for harvesting and sorting. He said some small-scale farmers in Johor had ceased operations due to difficulties in hiring workers, leaving their farms idle. 'We are smallholders. Inves-ting in farming technologies and automation requires big capital,' Lim said. He also cautioned consumers against buying vegetables from unlicensed farmers who were not registered with the Agriculture Department. Lim said vegetables grown by registered farmers were regularly monitored by the department to ensure compliance with chemical usage limits, including for fertilisers and pesticides. 'This is to ensure the vegetables are safe to consume and follow the Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices Scheme (MyGap).' Lim said the department's certification scheme was aimed at recognising farms that follow sustainable and responsible agricultural practices.

NST Leader: Employers dodging Perkeso contributions

The recent announcement by the Social Security Organisation, better known as Perkeso, that one in five workers — local and foreign — is without workplace accident or occupational disease coverage should worry the authorities into action. Based on the Statistics Department's employment figures, one in five means a whopping 2.5 million workers left out in the cold. And what is worse, these workers do not know that they have been deprived of the protection, all due to employers' non-compliance. Should workers be involved in workplace accidents or contract occupational diseases, they would be victims without remedies. As usual, our errant employers have a pile of excuses, several of which are just nonsense on stilts. Some lobby their associations to hawk their excuses so that they would be spared the legal consequences. Do not fall prey to such preposterous pleas, we tell the associations. Here are four silly ones, repeated ad infinitum. Remote working locations. A pathetic excuse at best. High turnover is another. A third is reliance on outsourced labour contractors. The rule is clear: it is the responsibility of the "principal" employer, not labour contractors. Work may be outsourced, not responsibility. Finally, limited administrative staff. How difficult is it for the employer to assign the task of registering their workers with Perkeso and making monthly contributions? We are not ruling out a few genuine cases of employers facing issues, but most choose not to comply because of the extra costs involved. As Perkeso group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed put it to this newspaper on Sunday, non-compliance among employers of Malaysian workers was rampant in the hospitality, food and beverage, manufacturing, wholesale and retail sectors. As for employers of foreign workers, the leading sectors with the highest dodgers are in construction, plantation, agriculture, manufacturing and services such as cleaning, hospitality and security. Employers who continue to trifle with their Perkeso contributions must know this: they are not optional but mandatory, meaning non-compliance will result in fines, and in appropriate cases, imprisonment. Admittedly, there might be cases, such as those that involve foreign workers, whose employers think that registering for Foreign Workers Compensation Scheme is enough. But how do the employers explain not making any Perkeso contributions for their local workers? Surely there isn't any system integration problem with the Immigration Department that employers love to quote. Let's be blunt. Many employers just don't want to part with the extra money Perkeso contributions would cost. Here is the thing. While complaining of thin margins, they pass the extra costs to the consumers ultimately. These non-compliant employers want to keep the cake and eat it. So they rather break the law. Dodgers must thank Perkeso for giving them countless opportunities to mend their ways. Leniency and amnesty programmes have been showered on errant employers, yet many continue breaking the law, caring very little for the welfare of the workers who have earned them the wealth they have accumulated. Such irresponsible employers deserve no leniency. Enough is enough. The dodgers have trifled with Perkeso contributions for too long to deserve any sympathy.
