The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said the responding agencies were the Metro Nashville Police and Fire Departments, Tennessee Highway Patrol, La Vergne Police Department, Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.
A message was left with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, which is handling the investigation, according to an employee at the La Vergne Police Department.

French police open investigation into Kylian Mbappe payments

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is never far from the headlines regardless of what he is doing, but has once again made ripples in France. A series of payments by the France captain are being investigated. Mbappe is part of an investigation that has been launched into five members of the Republican Security Corps (CRS) report Le Canard Enchaine (via Sport). The CRS are generally charged with general security, but in particular controlling crowds, disturbances and protests. Mbappe payments to CRS agents The focus of the investigation are payments made from Mbappe to five agents of the CRS in June of 2023. The intelligence agency Tracfin, which tracks financial crimes in France have a document which details payments of €30k to four CRS agents that summer, with a fifth agent receiving a total of €60.3k. The total outlay from Mbappe's accounts adds up to €180.3k, which was flagged by their systems. All five of the agents were assigned to protect the French national team at the time. Mbappe promised to donate World Cup fee The France captain had promised to donate all of his prize money from the 2022 Qatar World Cup to the security forces that protected them during the tournament, just six months earlier. There is a signed document from Mbappe saying as much, and the Real Madrid star had consulted his lawyer, who assured that the security personnel would not have to include the donations in their tax declaration. Personal protection or French national team? The internal investigation force in the French police are trying to establish whether the 'donations' relate to their job at the World Cup, or in reality to a personal protection for the 26-year-old. In particular, the fifth commanding officer, is under the microscope, having undertaken two trips to Cameroon and Vaucluse in the South of France alongside Mbappe in June 2023. Les Bleus played European qualifiers that month against Gibraltar and Greece, both of which Mbappe was involved in. The latter was in Paris at the Stade de France, some way from Vaucluse. It's been a tricky summer for Mbappe, who missed most of the Club World Cup with a virus, and is still involved in an ongoing legal battle with former club Paris Saint-Germain over unpaid wages.

Justice Department requests lists of undocumented immigrants in LA County jails

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the U.S. Department of Justice is targeting him after the federal government requested a list of incarcerated undocumented immigrants. During a news conference on Thursday, Luna said the federal government has threatened to charge him if his agency does not cooperate. "I've personally received, I'm going to call it, threatening letters from the federal government to make sure that we are cooperating with them, doing civil immigration enforcement," Luna said. "A lot of them say, if you don't, there's going to be consequences up to the point of you being charged federally." The Justice Department said they have sent requests to sheriff's departments across California asking "for lists of all inmates in their jails who are not citizens of the United States, their crimes of arrest or conviction, and their scheduled release dates." Luna said he hasn't seen the request. He added that even if he did, the Sheriff's Department wouldn't be able to help the DOJ. "We don't ask for immigration status," Luna said. "I don't know how we're going to provide a list to anybody, whether it's the fed or anybody else." Sanctuary laws in California and Los Angeles also bar local law enforcement from sharing information with immigration agents unless the federal government has a warrant. Luna said federal agents secured warrants for 20 incarcerated people this year, but the Trump administration is requesting more data without warrants. "At least for this year, there's 435 people that they've asked for in 2025," Luna said. "We have not fulfilled any of them because of state law." Republicans said California's sanctuary laws are hurting public safety. "You're not allowed to talk to ICE. You're not allowed to coordinate," Rep. Kevin Kiley said. "You're not allowed to coordinate. You're not allowed to honor a detainer request. So, what happens is that these individuals get released back out into the community." Luna emphasized that his department is not conducting immigration enforcement. "We cannot do our jobs without public trust in our community," Luna said. The Trump administration has granted Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents access to the personal information of 75 million Medicaid recipients, enabling the federal government to verify the citizenship status of all individuals. The database also has home addresses. Gov. Gavin Newsom said he will fight against any attempt to access information on those enrolled in MediCal, which is paid for with state revenue.

Mike Pence urges Trump to 'release all the files' on Jeffrey Epstein

Former Vice President Mike Pence urged the Trump administration to release all of the investigative findings related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a different stance his ex-boss took on July 16. During an interview with CBS News' Major Garrett, the former Indiana governor said the "time has come" for all the facts to become available to the American people, adding he's "always believed in transparency." Pence emphasized that the names of the victims should be excluded from any disclosure. "Whether or not the facts justify charges, I think anyone who participated or was associated with this despicable man ought to be held to public scrutiny," Pence told Garrett. Pence did not suggest the lack of transparency is politically motivated, but did hint that the investigation into the disgraced financier began during George W. Bush's administration and continued into Barack Obama's tenure at the White House. "I know of no reason why this administration — once the victims' names are protected — should not release all the files on Jeffrey Epstein," he said. The interview follows President Donald Trump's recent criticisms toward Republicans who raised questions about his administration's handling of the Epstein case. In a July 16 social media post, he described conservative backers as "stupid" and "weaklings" falling for Democrats' work. "Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. And my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bulls***,' hook, line, and sinker," Trump wrote. "They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years." USA TODAY reached out to the White House for comment on Pence's interview. Marjorie Taylor Green, Mike Johnson among calls for transparency Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, were among the Trump allies to push for transparency on the Epstein investigation. The calls came after the Justice Department released a memo earlier this month stating that a systematic review "revealed no incriminating 'client list" and that "no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted." The memo also said the department found no evidence to support theories that Epstein was murdered while in custody, affirming New York's chief medical examiner's ruling that he died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019. "No one believes there is not a client list," Greene wrote on a July 8 X post. In a July 15 interview with the Benny Johnson Show, Johnson also called for the release of more Epstein records, saying: "I'm for transparency." "It's a very delicate subject," he said. "But we should put everything out there and let the people decide." Trump says he doesn't understand 'fascination' with case Trump said he doesn't understand the "fascination" with the case, blaming "bad people" for the attention and coverage it continues to receive. "It's sordid, but it's boring," he told reporters on July 15,. "And I don't understand why it keeps going. Really only bad people, including fake news, want to keep something like that going." While Epstein died before sitting for trial, the registered sex offender pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution and solicitation of a minor for prostitution in Florida in 2008. Trump, who had a friendship with Epstein years ago, has appeared in legal documents concerning Epstein's crimes but is not implicated.
