My Chemical Romance triumphant at MetLife Stadium homecoming

Yahoo2 days ago
An opera buffa to a Bon Jovi sing-along -- this one had it all.
Did we mention a clown stabbed My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way at the Saturday, Aug. 9, band's homecoming show at MetLife Stadium and then blew himself up in a flash of blinding and deafening pyrotechnics?
We'll get to that later.
First, Belleville Mayor Michael Melham came on stage to present rockers with a ceremonial key to Belleville a few songs into the show. Way and his brother, bassist Mikey Way, were raised in Belleville, as was guitarist Frank Iero.
Lead guitarist Ray Toro is from Kearny.
It was a bit surreal. The band's Long Live the Black Parade tour features the band's 2006 hit album 'The Black Parade' performed as a conceptual theatrical presentation about a dystopian fascist country called Draag. The band members didn't break out of character when Melham gave them their ceremonial key.
They bowed to him. Gerard Way then gave Mayor Melham a bouquet of wheat and what was referred to as a fish wrapped in paper from Draag.
Gerard then called for a mock execution on the stadiums B-stage because they'd how they roll in Draag. Gerard later in the show said that Melham was a good sport for going along with the performance.
As for the show, the not-so-benevolent dictator was seated mysteriously in the middle of the stadium eating spaghetti while the band played 'The Black Parade.' The dictator liked what he saw and heard — he was shown clapping. Indeed , My Chemical Romance, artifice aside, thoroughly rocked the swamps of Jersey.
Toro delivered a dazzling lead guitar run on 'Dead!' and the band drove the sounds into another stratosphere on 'Teenagers.' Gerard is no Ronnie James Dio, but his nasally vocals has the it factor – he's able to convey deep emotion with his voice. Or unleash a maniacal laugh or sneer when called for.
There was a lot of that on Saturday, along with the pasta.
The aforementioned clown came out at the end of 'The Black Parade'-Draag saga and proceeded to stab Gerard, who bled fake blood profusely and crumbled to the stage floor. The clown then blew himself up.
Cal it opera buffa. Or maybe opera absurdist? Whatever, it was a rock 'n' roll spectacle on another level.
The band returned to the B-stage in the audience for another 45 minutes of hits and rarities. A young female fan in front of me was so excited hear the rare 'Vampires Will Never Hurt You' that she squealed and spun around in front of her seat. A mosh pit formed for 'Helena.'
Then, a very faithful to the original 'Livin' on a Prayer' closed the set. The 60,000 in the sold-out audience sang along.
'Being from the East Coast, New Jersey, I learned to survive you need Jersey vibes,' Gerard said. 'And in saying that, we're going to play you guys what may be the New Jesey state anthem. Frank (Iero) requested this song because he saw me do it at karaoke.'
Sets from Death Cab for a Cutie and Thursday of New Brunswick preceded My Chemical Romance. The show was Thursday's debut at the stadium.
Thursday's 2003 album, 'War All the Time, ' was the first to bring mainstream attention to the emo rock scene, of which My Chemical Romance would soon emerge.
'I just want to make as note of something, I have to say that I can't believe that we made it to MetLife before My Chem did,' joked Thursday lead singer Geoff Rickly. 'Technically. I'm not saying they should have practiced more or anything like that. I'm just kidding.
"I have to say we go way back with those guys and most of us started playing basement shows in New Jersey for three dollars and a can of soup," he continued. "There wasn't anybody in the music industry who wanted a band like My Chemical Romance to be as big as they are right now.'
My Chemical Romance is now only the third Jersey band to headline MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford after Saturday's show. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Bon Jovi are the other Jersey bands to headline the stadium, which opened in 2010.
Upcoming, My Chem plays Friday, Aug 15 at Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia. The Jonas Brothers, who hail from Wyckoff and Little Falls, begin their JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown tour Sunday, Aug. 10 at MetLife. They'll become the fourth Jersey headliner at the stadium.

Why Dennis Quaid's iconic 'Parent Trap' pool scene was a costume designer's nightmare

Not even Elizabeth James could save Dennis Quaid from the fashion heroics of "The Parent Trap." Quaid starred alongside then-newcomer Lindsay Lohan and Natasha Richardson in the 1998 family comedy about estranged twin sisters Hallie Parker and Annie James, who scheme to reunite their divorced parents after meeting during a chance encounter at summer camp. One of Quaid's most memorable scenes from the Disney film, which grossed $92.1 million at the global box office, is when his character Nick Parker spots his fashion designer ex, Elizabeth James (Richardson), at a hotel pool area. Stunned to see his former spouse after more than a decade, Nick quickly — and ungracefully — makes his way across the deck to talk to James, eventually falling into the pool after bumping into a hotel employee. Nick, who was dressed in a crisp two-piece suit and black dress shoes, later emerges from the pool and sheepishly walks over to James to greet her. "Dennis was very game to fall into the pool a few times in a row, which meant drying off, changing, and taking another spill," the film's director Nancy Meyers told People magazine in an interview published Aug. 9. "He was just wonderful to work with." The now-iconic scene was filmed at The Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey, California, and turned the marina hotel into something of a pop cultural landmark over the years. "Of all the filming we have had at the hotel over the past 35 years, that is the movie that guests mention the most," Ed Curry, the hotel's director of sales and marketing, told the magazine. "People love the movie, and all seem to know that is our pool area." 'Parent Trap' reunion! Lindsay Lohan explains Elaine Hendrix's 'Freakier Friday' cameo How Dennis Quaid pulled off 'Parent Trap' pool scene Quaid's commitment to his "Parent Trap" wipeout came at a sartorial cost. Costume designer Penny Rose told People magazine that Quaid changed between six identical designer suits from Giorgio Armani for the aquatic scene, with the production crew even spraying the suits with pool water to test the fabric. Rose noted that the chlorine from the pool water caused the suit to shrink. "I mean, I've had Tom Cruise in a fake suede shirt so that he can get it wet," Rose said. "But you can't really replicate an Armani suit." A 'Parent Trap' revival? Dennis Quaid not sure it's possible without Natasha Richardson Quaid reflected on the impact of "The Parent Trap" on his career in a March interview with People magazine, telling the outlet that the beloved dad character has become his signature role. "Everybody grew up with 'The Parent Trap,' and now there's always new kids coming along," said Quaid, jokingly adding: "I tell people, 'I was your babysitter because your parents would put this on. They'd go do what they wanted to do in the next room.'" This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Dennis Quaid's 'Parent Trap' pool scene was a fashion nightmare

Today's NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Tuesday, August 12

In case you missed Monday's NYT Mini, you can find the answers here: The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper's larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays. Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you'll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives. The NYT Mini is a fun daily distraction that usually takes no time at all. I try to beat the standard weekday grid in less than a minute. But sometimes I can't quite figure out one or two clues and need to reveal the answer. To help you avoid doing that, here are the NYT Mini Crossword answers (spoilers lie ahead, of course): FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers ACROSS 1) *Workplace for scientists - LAB 4) *Grub - CHOW 6) Maliciously revealed one's private identity, informally - DOXED 8) Spanish "but" - PERO 9) Gasoline type: Abbr. - REG DOWN 1) TV screen option, for short - LCD 2) ___, a skip and a jump - AHOP 3) *Someone who's always taking jabs at you? - BOXER 5) Used to be - WERE 7) ___ days (time of summer suggested by the answers to the starred clues) - DOG For a very tiny puzzle of almost exclusively 3 and 4 letter words, I found this puzzle a bit more difficult than I was expecting. The trickiest clue is 'someone who's always taking shots at you' which I thought was BULLY, because it fit, but BOXER is more clever. DOXED needs a certain set of internet knowledge skills to get and it may be tough without that. And you need the most basic Spanish on earth to get PERO, which many are not going to have.
