Nonprofit launches campaign to help keep Kansas City walkers, bikers safe
It's called Look Out for KC. Its goal is to significantly reduce the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed in crashes in Kansas City.
Memorial Day travel expected to break 20-year record
Independence Boulevard Christian Church sits right on Independence Avenue, which safety advocates say is one of the most dangerous streets in the city.
According to city leaders, there have been three deaths, nine serious injuries and almost 40 crashes on Independence Avenue in the last 18 months.
Pastor Mindy Fugarino said cars often drive above the speed limit and don't see members heading to church.
'The crosswalk is painted, but most people aren't seeing that and we did have somebody last year who did get hit,' she said.
On Monday, local nonprofit BikeWalkKC launched its campaign to help reduce the number of pedestrians who are struck. Part of the money for the campaign comes from a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation. The campaign will include sidewalk decals and billboards across the city.
'Far too often, when we hear about these crashes, it's kind of just a story, a blip, and it goes away,' said Michael Kelley with BikeWalkKC. 'But the fact of the matter is, these are our neighbors, these are our family members that we are losing to something that we know we can prevent.'
One of those decals will go at 86th Terrace and Troost Avenue, where Asia Dunmore's mother Michelle was .
She said their family has never been the same.

'My hope is first that everyone begins to pay more attention when driving. People drive a little safer, put their phones down and try not to evade capture,' Dunmore said. 'If something happens, own up to it.'

Grandville orthodontist facing federal child exploitation charges
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An orthodontist who formerly practiced in Grandville is now facing federal child exploitation charges. Thomas Shannon, 43, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday. He is charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography, according to the attorney's office. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Monday, a therapist reported in 2021 that a teenager had been sexually exploited. The victim told police that she had received money in exchange for sending illicit images, the complaint continues, and investigators traced the Snapchat and CashApp accounts to Shannon, who lived in Byron Township. Sex offender, busted in sting but not arrested, snagged again In 2022, amid a Kent County investigation, the complaint says Shannon hired a private forensic investigator to search his phone 'in an attempt to prove that he did not possess any child pornography.' 'The examiner, however, found child pornography and turned it over to police,' the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in a release. Authorities found evidence that Shannon possessed and received child pornography, according to the complaint. Investigators found that Shannon had communicated with multiple minor victims whom he met online, the complaint alleges. One was just 12 years old. The complaint placed most of the victims out of state. Shannon was in January 2023. But according to the federal complaint, he was released on bond. Investigators found that he was on bond for those charges while communicating with one victim — a 13-year-old — in 2024, the complaint alleges. The state case against Shannon is pending. Day 3 of trial for alleged mastermind in Young Dolph murder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hernandez Govan, the man accused of orchestrating the death of rapper Young Dolph, is set to appear in court for day three of his trial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Angela Arnold, the girlfriend of Cornelius Smith, was the first witness to take the stand. She told the court that to her knowledge, Smith never had direct contact with Big Jook and that he would communicate with Govan to send and receive messages. She also testified she saw Govan at a carwash hours after Young Dolph's death, when Smith picked up a cellphone from Govan he had left in the white Mercedes used in the murder. Various Memphis Police Investigators were then called to testify in court, along with cell phone records. According to the investigators, they went over calls and text records of Goavn, Smith, and Big Jook in the months leading up to the murder and afterward. They say Smith appeared to have several outgoing calls to Govan. But in cross-examination, Govan's defense attorney explained the reasoning for their communication, saying, Govan supplied Smith with various types of pills, and Johnson talked with him because he was an aspiring rapper. Another investigator who testified said detectives went to the airport to execute a search warrant on Big Jook's phone and asked if they could speak to him, but he refused.
