INS Rana, INS Jyoti arrive in Colombo for SLINEX-25
VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Naval Ships INS Rana (guided-missile destroyer) and INS Jyoti (fleet tanker) have arrived in Colombo for the 12th edition of the Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise (SLINEX-25). Launched in 2005, SLINEX is held regularly to enhance interoperability, strengthen maritime ties, and share best practices. The previous edition was hosted in Visakhapatnam in December 2024. The Harbour Phase, August 14–16, featured professional interactions, cultural exchanges, yoga sessions, and sporting events to foster camaraderie between the two navies. The Sea Phase, August 17–18, will include gunnery firing, navigation drills, fuelling at sea, and Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations. Sri Lankan Navy ships SLNS Gajabahu and SLNS Vijayabahu will participate, along with Special Forces from both sides. The officials said the exercise reflects strong bilateral maritime engagement and aligns with India's MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policy.

BeMC starts cleanliness & sanitation drive, to cover all 42 wards
Berhampur: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has launched a week-long mass cleanliness-cum-sanitation drive under the 'Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Swachhata' campaign. The drive, which started on Aug 9 and will continue until Aug 14, will be conducted at vulnerable garbage points covering all 42 wards. A toilet cleanliness drive was also conducted in Golapalli Sahi and Mango Market on Monday. "Our aim is to make the drive a mass movement with the involvement of people," said Kalyani Sanghamitra, BeMC deputy commissioner (sanitation). Besides focusing on cleanliness, the civic body also conducted different competitions among school and college students, and members of women self-help groups (SHGs) based on the theme of 'Independence Day'. "A 'jhoti' competition on Har Ghar Tiranga was held among the SHG members, where they showcased their artistic skills," she said. The Har Ghar Swachhata campaign assumed significance, particularly in Berhampur, as its ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 dropped to 75 and 64 at the national and state levels, respectively. Sanghamitra Dalei, mayor of BeMC, said they would try to retain their earlier position in the cleanliness survey in the coming years and sought the cooperation of the people. The Gajapati administration has decided to distribute around 1 lakh national flags as part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. "We have provided the flags to block development officers. They will distribute them through the SHG members," said Timan Bara, district project officer, Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM). The distribution will begin on Wednesday.
