New details emerge days after Tom Thibodeau's surprising exit from the New York Knicks
As reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on The Pat McAfee Show, Knicks owner James Dolan and team president Leon Rose initiated internal meetings immediately after the team's playoff exit.
The conclusion? A fresh voice was needed to elevate the franchise to championship level.
'As soon as the season ended, they started meetings internally, and James Dolan, the Knicks Owner, and Leon Rose, the President, they believed the best path for this team to take the next step to win a championship was they needed a new voice,' Charania said. He's fired as their head coach.'
Despite the success, some cracks were beginning to show.
According to Vince Goodwill
of Yahoo Sports, at least
one anonymous Knicks player expressed a strong unwillingness to return under Thibodeau's leadership
.
'A couple of players felt like Thibodeau played the starters too many minutes and felt he had an inability to adjust, sources said, and another player said he didn't feel like he could play for Thibodeau if the coach returned next season.'
SNY's Ian Begley also gave his remarks on the matter.
"Entire Knick[s] roster had strong respect/admiration for Tom Thibodeau. Players interviewed this week in assessment spoke respectfully of Thibodeau while also pointing out areas that needed to change/improve. That feedback factored into Thibs ouster," Begley
shared on X
.
According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, doubts weren't about his work ethic or command but rather his ability to lead the team to the next level.
'The players hadn't tuned out Thibodeau, one source told ESPN, but there was doubt that he could lead them to the Finals after the way the Knicks lost to the Pacers.'
Even Begley, who has followed the Knicks closely, expressed surprise over the timing of the decision.
'This was year over year progress ... this is what you look for when you build a team that can contend,' Begley said. 'But it tells you a lot about where they think there are.
And the sense of urgency, the sense of immediacy they have in wanting to get to the Finals and get to an NBA championship.'

Jay Wright not in the mix to coach New York Knicks: Report

Contrary to reports, former Villanova coach Jay Wright isn't in the mix to become the new head coach of the New York Knicks. Seth Davis, an American sportswriter and broadcaster, confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Wright had told the New York Knicks that he intends to remain retired as he isn't interested in taking up the coaching gig. "BREAKING: Jay Wright has confirmed to me that he has informed the Knicks that he is not interested in any coaching position and plans to remain retired," Davis wrote on X. The broadcaster also confirmed that Jay Wright briefly discussed the position with New York Knicks President Leon Rose, but he was never offered the job or asked to give an interview. "Jay confirmed that he and his good friend Leon Rose discussed the position briefly but he was never offered the job or asked to interview. He simply reiterated that he plans to stay retired," Davis said further. The 63-year-old Wright spent more than 20 years at Villanova before calling time on his career in 2022. He then became an analyst for CBS and TNT. Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and Jalen Brunson are some of the current New York Knicks players who have been coached by Wrightat Wildcats. Hart also reacted to the rumours of Wright becoming the New York Knicks coach on X, joking that his former coach should "stay retired." "Man Thank You. Stay retired," he wrote. The New York Knicks recently fired Tom Thibodeau. The move came out of the blue, especially considering how he led the team to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. According to ESPN, the New York Knicks are considering Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, among other head coaching candidates, for the high-profile job. The Indiana Pacers recently defeated the New York Knicks in Game 6 to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000.

'One I really wanted': Coco Gauff claims emotional French Open title, fulfills long-held dream

Coco Gauff of the U.S. kisses the trophy after winning the final of the French Open. (AP Photo) Coco Gauff called it 'one I really wanted' - and now, she finally has it. The 21-year-old American tennis star secured her first French Open crown in dramatic fashion, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 in swirling, testing conditions at Roland Garros on Saturday. Gauff, who lost in the 2022 French Open final to Iga Swiatek as a teenager, made good on her promise to return stronger, surviving a nervy start and harsh winds that challenged both players. 'It was not a day for great tennis, honestly,' Gauff admitted. 'I don't know too many people that could play great tennis today, but it's part of the sport and part of playing outside.' 'When I was younger, I felt I had the best shot of winning this tournament. If I went through my career and didn't get at least one of these, I would have felt regrets.' The win holds even deeper meaning for Gauff, who vividly recalled the moment Swiatek lifted the trophy two years ago. 'I remembered trying to take it all in and feel like I wanted that experience for myself,' she reflected. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo 'So when the [US] anthem got played today, I kind of had those reflections.' The victory makes Gauff the first woman since Venus Williams in 2005 to beat a world No. 1 from a set down in a Grand Slam final. She dismissed Sabalenka's post-match comment that Swiatek would have beaten her: 'I don't agree with that. I'm sitting here.' American filmmaker Spike Lee, cheering courtside, added a slice of pop culture to the triumph. 'Even though the Knicks didn't win, I gave him something to cheer for,' Gauff said with a smile.
