Bhool Chuk Maaf OTT release: Raj Kumar Rao's movie won't release on OTT just yet after Bombay HC ruling

Mint11-05-2025

The Bombay High Court temporarily stayed the release of Raj Kumar Rao-starrer film 'Bhool Chuk Maaf'on OTT or any other platform on Saturday, May 10. As per reports, the court halted Maddock Films from releasing 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' on OTT platforms before completing the agreed 8-week theatrical run with PVR Inox.
The decision came after PVR Inox approached the court following Maddock Films' announcement that the movie would skip its theatrical release due to "heightened security drills across the nation" and go straight to Amazon Prime Video on May 16, news agency ANI reported.
Maddock Films announced on May 8 — just days after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor — that it, along with Amazon MGM Studios, decided to "bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide."
Maddock Films' statement said that the decision was taken "in light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation" amid the India-Pakistan conflict.
Following the announcement, Multiplex chain PVR Inox moved the court, challenging the producers' decision to release it on OTT instead of theatres. It demanded that the film be released in theatres first.
PVR Inox alleged a breach of contract by the producers, Maddock Films. It stated that the last-minute change was a clear breach of their contract, which was signed on May 6, 2025. They also pointed out that the agreement included an 8-week window before the movie could be streamed online.
As per the agreement dated May 6, the film was to release in cinemas across India on May 9 and would not be released on OTT or any other platform for a period of eight weeks thereafter, PVR Inox was quoted by PTI as saying.
"But the producers terminated the agreement just a day before the release and announced an OTT release on May 16," PVR Inox's counsel Dinyar Madon argued.
Meanwhile, Maddock's counsel Venkatesh Dhond said the eight-week 'holdback' clause would apply only if there was a theatrical release.
A bench of Justice Arif Doctor said on Friday that PVR Inox had fulfilled its obligations by promoting the film, reserving screens, and offering tickets to its consumers, and a sudden cancellation would affect its "reputation and goodwill."
In an interim order (order passed before the final decision), the court restrained Maddock Films from releasing the film on any platform until eight weeks after its theatrical release at PVR cinemas.
The high court scheduled the matter for further hearing on June 16 and asked Maddock to file its reply in the meantime.
Bhool Chuk Maaf, directed and written by Karan Sharma, features Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi together on screen for the first time.

Top Advance Bookings At Major National Chains For Opening Day In 2025: Housefull 5 secures 3rd spot among Bollywood movies with 90,000 tickets

The advance bookings for Housefull 5 have wrapped up for its opening day, and the numbers are in. The Akshay Kumar fronted comic caper has sold 90,000 tickets in top national chains like PVRInox and Cinepolis. This places Housefull 5 as the third highest-selling Bollywood film in advance bookings for 2025, trailing behind Chhaava (223,000 tickets) and Sikandar (143,000 tickets). However, these figures are, at best, mediocre for a franchise known for its mass appeal and star-studded cast. Fans and trade analysts expected much stronger advance numbers, given the brand value of the Housefull series. Other Bollywood releases like Raid 2 (86,000 tickets), Sky Force (52,000 tickets), and Badass Ravikumar (47,500 tickets) are behind Housefull 5, but the gap isn't as wide as one would hope for a film of this scale. Films like Kesari 2 (33,000 tickets), Emergency (27,000 tickets) and Jaat (20,000 tickets) round out the list. We had reported that Raid 2 sold 93,000 tickets in top national chains for the opening day in our listicle. To clarify, Raid 2 had sold 93,000 tickets by morning of the day of release. At midnight, the total ticket sales were 86,000. 1. Chhaava - 223,000 tickets 2. Sikandar - 143,000 tickets 3. Housefull 5 - 90,000 tickets 4. Raid 2 - 86,000 tickets 5. Sky Force - 52,000 tickets 6. Badass Ravikumar - 47,500 tickets (Rs 99) 7. Kesari 2 - 33,000 tickets 8. Bhool Chuk Maaf - 30,000 tickets 9. Emergency - 26,000 tickets (Rs 99) 10. Jaat - 20,000 tickets Outside the top national chains, Housefull 5 has performed better, especially in single-screen theaters and smaller centers. However, even these numbers are also not as impressive as they should be for a franchise that thrives on family audiences. The film's advance bookings for the weekend show a ray of hope. Families, eager to enjoy a light-hearted comedy during the festive holiday, have driven relatively stronger ticket sales for Saturday and Sunday. This could give the film a much-needed boost over the opening weekend. Financially, Housefull 5 is in a decent spot before its theatrical release. The makers have already recovered 60 percent of the film's budget through non-theatrical revenues, such as satellite, digital, and music rights. For Housefull 5 to be declared a hit, it needs to aim high at the ticket counters. It must net atleast over Rs 200 crore in India and gross over Rs 325 crore worldwide to be in contention to get a hit tag. Given the franchise's track record, this target is achievable but will depend heavily on positive word-of-mouth and sustained footfalls over the festive period. The Housefull series has always been a crowd-pleaser, banking on its mix of humor, star power, and family-friendly entertainment. But with only 90,000 advance tickets sold in top chains for the opening day, the film hasn't generated the buzz it needed. If Housefull 5 delivers on laughs and entertainment, it could overcome this average start. For now, all eyes are on its opening day performance and how it holds up over the crucial festive weekend.

Housefull 5 Final Advance Booking: Akshay Kumar starrer sells 90,000 tickets in national chains

The Akshay Kumar led Housefull 5 is just hours away from its release, and the advance booking for the comic caper is looking to close in the vicinity of 90,000 tickets. While PVRInox has sold 71,000 tickets, Cinepolis has sold about 19,000 tickets for the opening day as on Thursday at 11.59 PM. The film could open the first show on Friday morning with pre-sales of 1 lakh. To put things to context, Raid 2 had sold 86,000 tickets in the national chains by mid-night and opened the day with an advance of 93,000 tickets. The advance bookings should have been higher by at-least 25 percent for this Akshay Kumar, and this level of pre-sale leaves a lot for the film to make up with the walk-in audience. Housefull 5 has scored the third biggest advance of the year after Chhaava (2,25,000 tickets*) and Sikandar (1,43,000 tickets), though pre-sales in the north of 1.10 lakh would have looked sweeter. The biggest plus for Housefull 5 rests in the fact that the advance booking numbers are genuine and organic, without any external intervention – a bug that has taken over the industry hard in the post-covid era. Housefull is not usually an advance-heavy franchise and hence the hopes are pinned on the film to record stronger than usual walk-ins through the day, and then see a big surge in business on Saturday and Sunday. While the advance booking is about 5 percent better than Raid 2, the collections in advance would be about 25 percent better, as the makers have gone ahead with super blockbuster pricing as compared to popular slab adopted by Raid 2. MovieMax chain on the other hand has sold approx. 3600 tickets, placing itself ahead of films like Salaar (2700 tickets), Fighter (2850 tickets), and Shaitaan (3000 tickets) in the same range as Sikandar (3700 tickets). The film has sold about 4500 tickets in Miraj, as compared to 5000 tickets sold by Fighter. The scenario in non-national chains is a lot better than the national chains, which gives a hope of better performance in the single screens with spot bookings. The data of Rajhans is still awaited and we will update the article by 1 AM with the data too. Interestingly, 70 percent of the total sales all across the board have come for Housefull 5A, and just 30 percent is for Housefull 5B. All in all, its an average result for Housefull 5 in the advance booking, and the hope is on the film to deliver entertainment, leading to big spikes in the business on Saturday and Sunday. The film did gain some sort of momentum on Thursday, which keeps it in the race for a Rs 20 crore start in India, leading to holiday on Saturday and Sunday. The film should be targeting a weekend of at-least Rs 80 crore, and a good talk in the target audience will help it sail through over the weekend.

The Pickup OTT Release Date: When and where to watch Eddie Murphy and Keke Palmer's heist comedy film online

The Pickup OTT Release Date: If you're someone who loves a good heist flick with loads of action, comedy, and a solid mix of chaos and charm, August 6 is your date. That's when The Pickup, a fresh, fast-paced heist comedy starring Eddie Murphy, Keke Palmer, and Pete Davidson, drops on Amazon Prime Video. So get the popcorn ready because this isn't your average armoured-truck robbery. What is The Pickup all about? The story kicks off with two completely mismatched armoured truck drivers, Russell (Eddie) and Travis (Pete). They're just going about what seems like a boring, routine cash pickup job. But their day takes a wild turn when a clever and dangerous crew of thieves led by Zoe (Keke) ambushes them. What starts as a simple job turns into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game full of unexpected twists. Meet the cast and crew of The Pickup The Pickup is directed by Tim Story, who's no stranger to mixing action with comedy. He's the guy behind hits like Barbershop and Ride Along, and he brings that same high-energy, slick direction here. The script comes from Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Oh, and yes, Eddie Murphy also steps in as one of the producers, along with Tim Story himself and a few others. Now, this isn't a two-man show. The film has a pretty loaded cast. Apart from Murphy, Davidson, and Palmer, you've got Eva Longoria, Jack Kesy, NFL legend Marshawn Lynch, WWE superstar Roman Reigns (a.k.a. Joe Anoa'i), Andrew Dice Clay, and Ismael Cruz Córdova. Filming mostly took place in Atlanta, but the shoot didn't go without a hiccup. There was a scary moment during a second-unit action sequence involving an armoured truck and a car crash, which left a few crew members injured. Thankfully, none of the main cast was involved, and the team took immediate steps to address safety on set after the incident.
