T'ganu Umno Youth faces backlash for inadvertent Jalur Gemilang mistake
This came in the wake of their recent criticism of others for making similar mistakes.
The division had uploaded a social media post condemning the recent upside-down flag incident in Penang, as well as the death of bullying victim Zara Qairina.
The post described the acts as "cruel, rude and heartless" and called for the harshest punishment for those responsible.
However, sharp-eyed social media users quickly noticed that the Jalur Gemilang image in the post had only 12 red-and-white stripes instead of 14.
Netizens were quick to point out the irony, with many posting sarcastic comments and sharing screenshots before the group replaced the image with the correct version.
One user wrote: "YB Akmal Saleh, can you go to the designer's house and teach them how to draw the Malaysian flag?"
Another commented: "We Malaysians are also very disappointed and angered by this careless act of using the wrong Jalur Gemilang. Don't delete the post, okay? Screenshots have been taken!"
One user even compared the "before and after" versions of the post, while another remarked: "Did your boss not hold a class on how to draw the flag before posting? Don't turn your leader, YB Dr Akmal Saleh, into an embarrassment, aiyo. 'Don't act first, then apologise' — so it actually means, 'No need to apologise, just quietly fix it'. Now I get it."
The division later replaced the image with a corrected version.
In a later Facebook video, Akmal called on the authorities to investigate and prosecute the Terengganu Umno Youth member who produced a poster showing the Jalur Gemilang with the wrong number of stripes.
"There are two stripes missing, and I have confirmed the mistake came from the person who designed the poster. We take responsibility," he said.
Akmal stressed that he would not excuse the error, despite it coming from within his own ranks.
On Aug 9, a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the national flag was found hanging upside-down outside his shop.
The shop owner stated that it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected shortly after.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh had announced plans to stage a protest at the shop, but the gathering did not take place after police were stationed in the area and advised against it.
Akmal has been vocal against improper displays of the Jalur Gemilang and said he wanted to visit the shop owner to "teach" him how to display it properly.

Umno urges firm action over improper display of Jalur Gemilang
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has called on authorities to take firm action against anyone committing offences involving the improper display or hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party views repeated offences in this matter as serious, given that the national flag represents the dignity and sovereignty of the country. "Firm and stern action, including prosecution, must be taken against anyone committing such offences, regardless of the reasons given, in accordance with the existing provisions of the law," he said at a press conference after the party's supreme council meeting last night. Umno calls for tough action against repeated national flag violations
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has urged the authorities to take firm legal action, including prosecution, against anyone found guilty of repeatedly mishandling the installation and display of the Jalur Gemilang. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said such acts tarnish the dignity and sovereignty of the nation, and offenders must be dealt with under existing laws without exception. 'Umno takes the repeated offences involving the installation and flying of the Jalur Gemilang seriously. 'Firm and severe action, including prosecution, must be taken against anyone who commits this offence regardless of the reason, in line with the provisions of the law,' he said after the Umno Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday (Aug 13). The statement comes amid public concern over several recent incidents in which the national flag was displayed incorrectly, sparking debate over whether the mistakes were due to ignorance or deliberate acts. On Aug 9, a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the national flag was found hanging upside-down outside his shop. The shop owner claimed that it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected shortly after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh previously announced plans to stage a protest at the shop, but the gathering did not take place after police were stationed in the area and advised against it.

Minister raises concern over tourism safety in Sabah
Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Tiong and enforcement officers inspecting a boat. - Pic via Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing (拿督斯里张庆信) | Facebook KOTA KINABALU: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has voiced growing concern over rising safety issues in Sabah's tourism sector. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he said numerous complaints had been received regarding misconduct and illegal activities at several tourist locations, which could affect the industry's safety reputation. He recently led a joint inspection operation in Tawau involving his ministry's licensing and enforcement division, the Immigration Department, police, and other agencies. The two-day operation included checks on 30 tourist buses and vehicles, 15 tourism business premises, 40 boats, and four jetties, resulting in summonses for nine offences. Findings revealed that some companies, appearing locally owned, were operated by foreign investors, including those from China, and were involved in unlicensed activities such as operating water chalets, aquaculture, and homestays on agricultural or farming land. Tiong urged local authorities to take swift action against unlicensed operators and stressed that while foreign investment is welcome, it must comply fully with Malaysian laws and regulations. He warned that operators found to be violating rules could have their licences permanently revoked and reminded local tourism players not to risk their livelihoods by misusing or lending licences for profit. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
